Neighbourhood
Our neighborhood is very friendly and welcoming. It was built with families in mind, and there are many of them here! When the weather is nice, you will find lots of neighbors out and about, especially kids, riding bikes, playing in the parks, and playing games outdoors.
There is a neighborhood ice cream/sandwich shop and a nice hair and nail salon, both just a few minutes' walk from our house. A neighborhood market and cafe are being built about 1/2 mile from our house, with a sidewalk that leads directly to it. Projected opening of the market is late spring 2022.
The south end of our neighborhood borders the Yellowstone River, where there are walking trails, including "Norm's Island," which is a forested loop of beautiful walking trails. The Montana Audubon Center is also located along these trails, and offers fun, free and low-cost activities for adults and children, such as bird walks and canoeing in the ponds. The whole area is wonderful for bird watchers!
Red Lodge, Montana, a small mountain town, is a little more than an hour drive from Billings. Red Lodge has lots of beautiful hiking trails in warmer weather, and a ski hill, snowshoeing, and Nordic skiing in the winter.
The northeast and east entrances of Yellowstone National Park are a 2-2.5 hour drive from our house, depending on highway traffic. This makes seeing part of the park a day trip, or a comfortable home base before and/or after spending some time camping in the Park. Many people in our area like to take day trips, entering Yellowstone through one of the entrances and exiting trough another, making a very pretty driving loop. Bison spotting almost guaranteed!
The Beartooth Highway is a 4-5 hour roundtrip drive from our house, and is considered one of the most scenic drives in the world.
Nearest airport
There is a small international airport in Billings. The airport code is BIL. It is about 20 minutes driving to our house from the airport.
Other airports in the area are Bozeman (BZN) and Sheridan, WY (SHR)--both are a 2 hour drive from Billings.
Getting around
A car is the easiest way way to get around Billings. It may be possible for guests to use our car; it will depend upon driving licenses and whether we have taken our car with us.
Bus service here is inexpensive covers most of the city, but it requires a transfer to get downtown, and would likely take an hour to get from our house to downtown. Driving to downtown takes 10 minutes or less. There is a bus that picks up at the entrance to our neighborhood, a 3 block walk from our house. It runs Monday-Saturday, and picks up approximately once every hour. It operates from about 7am-6pm on weekdays, and 9am-5pm on Saturdays. More info about routes, schedule, and prices at the link below. The bus route that picks up near our house is the "Route 13: Westend" route. Our neighborhood is the "Mullowney Ln & Elysian Rd" stop #8. https://ci.billings.mt.us/2885/MET-Transit

People Like Us Local Guide
We’re fairly new to our area, and moved here in the middle of the pandemic. We don’t know much about what the city has to offer, but we are well-versed in hiking trails and huckleberry picking locations!
We also love getting together to share travel stories and learn about new people and places. We’d love to host PLU-ers for dinner or coffee while they’re passing through.
