Our house is at the edge of Doonbeg Bay on the Wild Atlantic Way coastal Ireland in Co Clare.
We had it built in 1985 in the tradtional style cottage ,white with black slate roof, a floor to ceiling fireplace and sash windows. Doonbeg is a lovely village with great pubs, restaurants, traditional music ,and great walks. In recent years a world famous golf course was built across the bay. Scenic trips along the West Coast and a ferry to Co Kerry are most enjoyable. The town of Kilkee with beautiful cliff walks is just a 20 minute drive along the coast and Kilrush a market town with 3 supermarkets and the ferry to Kerry very nearby is also 20 minutes away
The beauty of the Burren national park is an hour.
The space
Our house has four bedrooms, two of which have queen sized beds, one has twin beds and the last has a bunk bed.
All linens and towels are supplied.
The central room has a beautuful floor to ceiling fireplace as a central feature.
This is a living cum dining room.
There is a seperate small kitchen with plenty of food prep space, fridge freezer ,double oven, a window looking out at the waves as you prepare good fresh fish that can be bought locally.
The bathroom has a good ,powerful walk in shower .
Folding chairs etc for the beach or to sit outside to watch the sunset( or sunrise) lots of books, journals, travel guides maps to areas of interest.
Guest access
The house has two floors, a staircase to the twin bedded room and another on the other side of the house to the queen bedded room. There is one step into the house at the front. One step at the back.
There is a walk in shower with a shower head that can be hand held .
There is one small step at the front door.

Neighbourhood
Our house overlooks the ocean and the beach, White Strand is a 5 minute drive .
The small harbour is directly in front of the house and the remains of a 16th century ,castle or tower house is right there at the harbour.
You can buy great fresh fish from CS fish just ourside of the village.
There are pubs in the village, some with tradional music, some with great food.
There is a local walk that I love by going up the hill and then going left across country. There is a small grocery shop in the village, walkable. The main shopping areas are Kilrush or Kilkee. Kilkee has a great cliff walk by the sea and some good restaurants.( Kilkee and Kilrush are about 20 minute drive. The Burren national park with it’s magnificent limestone landscape ‘ the Ailwee caves, Pol na Brone capstone and scenic drive is about an hour. Many visitors have taken the ferry from near Kilrush to visit Co Kerry.
Getting to my home
Shannon airport is 62 km. It is around an hours drive.
Dublin to Doonbeg is 271 km.
Galway is 108 km.
Most people come by car .
There is train service to Ennis ( the main town in Co Clare) bus service after that but very limited. Our car could be made available in an exchange.
Nearest airport
Shannon 62 km ( an hour from Doonbeg)
Getting around
You can walk to the local shops, pubs about 15 minutes along the sea.
You will need a car for many intersting day trips.
Ginny’s home is lovely. This area of southwest Ireland, Doonbeg, County Clare is ideal for hiking, visiting castles and ruins, the Wild Atlantic Way, all the small towns are within an hour or hour and a half drive. I’ve been here for a week and it’s averaged 16C/62F with cool ocean breezes and the occasional “liquid sunshine” (light rain). I’d highly recommend you visit Ireland. I was afraid there would be too many tourists but I’ve driven all over any only experienced crowds in the very touristy sites. Fly into Shannon airport and you’re an hour away from this lovely spot.
Ginny and Frank´s lovely house in Doonbeg has been a wonderful starting point for exploring County Clare, Galway and Connemara. Awesome cliffs, lakes, castles and villages. We had a very welcoming arrival and the recommendations of the hosts have been very helpful to enjoy our stay. The house was very clean and the beds comfortable. A very quiet place in front of the sea where you can hear nothing but the songs of the birds and the waves of the sea. Thank you very much, Ginny and Frank. I hope you will enjoy in Zarautz as much as we have in Doonbeg.
Ginny and Frank visited us in September and were our first PLU guests! This was a non reciprocal exchange so I had the pleasure of meeting them in person.
They are a warm and friendly couple who I had many engaging conversations with. They treated our home and neighbors with respect and left the house in a very tidy state.
We hope to see them back again and would heartily recommend them as guests to any hosts. 🙂
Ginny and Frank took care of our flat as if it was their own home. Undoubtedly I can recommend them as fellows for a swap. Thank you very much indeed.
It was easy to communicate with Ginny prior to and during her stay in my home. She was kind enough to receive a few packages for me as well. She left my place in good shape and was respectful to my home. She is a good guest to have and I have no worries about recommending her.
We have had many exchanges over the years but Caroline’s cottage at the edge of Winters Pond will always be one of our favourite spots .
The cottage has been lovingly restored and decorated sympathetically as near as can be to its original era.
From our bedroom we could watch the morning sunlight shimmer and shine on the pond .
A beautiful sight to wake to. The ducks passing by add fun.
The cottage is well equipped and the bed very comfortable.
Although it is near to the main house it is very private and secluded .
The town of Winchester with its many restaurants ,food shopping and the train into Boston is one of the nicest towns in proximity to Boston.
I found a copy of Robert Frosts book of poems “ You Come Too” in the library room.
One of my favourite collections .
I would highly suggest that if you like peace and quiet after a day of visiting and sightseeing in the Boston area, “ You Come Too”
Or if you just want a place to relax , chill and rest ,
watch the morning sun and sky reflect on the water from the lovely screened in porch , You come Too .
Thank you Caroline.
We hopefully will be back again.
Ginny and Frank
We had a lovely time at Susan’s house in Scituate, Mass.
Our favourite room was the garden room where you are surrounded by trees and nature the local turkey family also make occasional visits to the garden. Fun to watch.
The bed was extremely comfortable which is important to us.
We did tend to dine out a lot as Scituate has many good restaurants. If you wanted to do more cooking , the large and well equipped and bright kitchen is there for you,
The beach, nice walks and Scituate Harbour down the road with its restaurants and little shops , is charming.
In a shop called “Run” I bought a pair of Swiss made walking shoes that are the most comfortable of any I have ever owned.
Thank you for the exchange .
Ginny and Frank
We met Rita on her arrival to Doonbeg.
We had to leave that day and felt quite assured that Rita would treat our house with care And have a good time exploring the area and West Coast of Ireland.
We haven’t been down since Rita left but she listed all the things she did before leaving the house and it sounded exceptionally considerate. We were in communication while Rita was there and I was happy to hear of her escapades , she is a good PLU role model. Happy trails Rita. Ginny and Frank
Basque Country was surprisingly green and lush.
The food we ate and the people whom we interacted with were wonderful, helpful and friendly .
Joseba was easy and friendly to communicate with over the exchange discussions and helpful with messages any time by phone.
It was nice to meet with him.
The apartment was spacious and comfortable .
Particularly the bed which is important for us.
We tended to eat out ( in the old town Zarautz and in San Sebastion) and there are many choices .
There is a nice small supermarket and a lovely cafe just 5 minutes from the apartment.
A high point for us was walking along the boardwalk or in the water all the way to the “ old town” having dinner And getting a delicious artisan ice cream cone on the way home ( get the chocolate one) at a place Joseba suggested .
The apartment was well equipped with everything you might need .
The bus or train to Donestia ( San Sebastion ) is very near the apartment. We travelled into San Sebastion by both. The bus let you see more of the countryside. Surfing is a big sport in Zauratz and exciting to watch .
We met a group of young boys ( probably 9 and 10 years of age from all over Spain who were training at a camp to be football “ goalies” I complimented their coaches on their great behavior at dinner .
Maybe one of them will play for Spain some day.
Thanks Joseba and family for sharing Zarautz with us.
Communication with Joseba was easy and consistant over the months leading up to he and his family going to Doonbeg.
We did not get to meet them but we did talk by video.
We are glad that they enjoyed themselves and saw much of the West Coast of Ireland.
I had asked Joseba to do a few things on leaving the house as we could not get down for a few weeks.
Joseba was very co operative in our requests and sent me photos of how the house was left and everything was fine.
I would heartily recommend Joseba and his family as kind and cooperative guests.
If they return to Ireland some day we would love to meet up with them.
We look forward to completing our exchange in Basque country in June.
We had a perfect four days in Melissa’s lovely condo. So pretty with such interesting objects from what seems her travels . A comfy bed , a beautiful other guest room which we did not use. Readily available Wi-Fi, music system ,tv and Netflix . We mostly ate out ( Driftwood for breakfast) The Barnacle and The Landing for lunch or dinner.
Everything was easy and so well organized . Directions, entrance , some nice essentials in the fridge and great tips on things to see and places to eat. Believe me,
Melissa knows the best places .
Marblehead is such an historical and scenic town that we know and love but even found some new vistas and loved the old ones. A perfect place by the sea with easy access to Boston ( MBTA bus service direct to the city if you do not want to drive . Thank you Melissa . Hope to see you in Doonbeg Co Clare.
Thanks Ginny! Lovely to host you both.
Melissa has not visited our house in Doonbeg but we hope to wrlcome her when she has the chance to do so.
