What is Javascript and why is it required for the People Like Us website?

Received a message on the website that Javascript is required? Here's how to fix it.

Have you seen a message on the People Like Us website saying that JavaScript is required? Something like this? ..

This blog post explains what it means and what to do about it.

Firstly, what's JavaScript?

JavaScript is a type of computer language that lets websites and web applications do interactive and dynamic things. It helps make web pages more than just static text and images by allowing them to respond to user actions, like clicking buttons, showing animations, and updating information on the page without needing to reload it.

The People Like Us website uses JavaScript extensively for things like searching for addresses and sending messages.

Why do I need JavaScript, and why is there a problem?

While all web browsers come with JavaScript enabled, it's also possible to disable it. Some VPNs and security software will enable JavaScript as well. Some people do this to make websites simpler, or more secure, or faster.

Sometimes it's forced upon people by using a work computer that mandates the setting. If that's the case, you'll likely have to speak to your work's security administrator to ask for an exception for our website.

In reality, most concerns about Javascript are overblown. Most websites use at least some JavaScript and some, like ours, require it to be able to use the website at all.

In short, JavaScript is required for the People Like Us website. Without it, it's not possible to search or to communicate with other members.

How do I turn JavaScript on?
