General overview
Kia ora from Aotearoa (New Zealand).
Our 3-level coastal villa townhouse is part of a block of 4 in a resort of 26 apartments which are mostly owner-occupied, with some private holiday homes and rental holiday accommodation.
The separate and self-contained guest suite is on the lowest level, accessed via a shared front door on the mid-level, then down a flight of stairs on the right to the door at the bottom of the stairs.
The bedroom also has ranch-slider doors that open all the way along to maximise the outdoor view.
There is a kitchenette with the latest Nespresso Vertuo Pop, a Nespresso Aeroccino 4 milk frother, a flatbed inverter microwave oven, kettle and toaster as well as glassware, cutlery and crockery for guests to use.
There is also an outdoor table and chairs as well as a bench desk/table inside.
The king-sized bed in the guest suite can be split into two, long singles, if required.
For your security and ours, we have external video security at the complex.
The space
Please note, the apartment complex is on a hill, which makes for fantastic views, but this also means there's a bit of an incline on the walk back from the nearby beach and food store.
Guest access
A fob and room key are available from the MasterLock Smart Lockbox located on Villa 10's storage unit next to the carport. Instructions will be provided nearer to the exchange.
In the meantime, please download the MasterLock app to access the lockbox. We aim for the access code to be the LAST FOUR DIGITS of your mobile telephone number or time limited access.
PLEASE RETURN THE FOB AND KEY TO THE MASTERLOCK SMARTLOCK BEFORE YOU LEAVE.
Any issues, please contact your hosts.
Please be aware, there are steps from the carpark to the front entrance. However, if you'd prefer to avoid these, you can bring your wheeled luggage down the drive and along the flat, paved path but there is an internal flight of stairs down to the lower ground level where the studio suite is located.
For your security and ours, we have Ring video doorbell at the front door.
Notes
The room can get quite warm in the summer, so we have installed a ceiling fan. Also, the ranch-slider doors open right up during the day to let in the sea breeze and windows provide a cooling breeze at night. Plus, there's a Dyson fan for cooling, heating and air purifying.
Leaving the blackout drapes pulled during the day also helps with temperature control.

Neighbourhood
Cable Bay is in a wider area known as Doubtless Bay in the so called "Winterless North".
Wikipedea says it best, "Doubtless Bay is a bay situated on the east coast of the Northland Region, north-east of Kaitaia, in New Zealand. It extends from Knuckle Point on Karikari Peninsula in the north to Berghan Point at Hihi in the south. There are rocky headlands, backed by many extensive beaches, such as Tokerau Beach, Taipa, Cable Bay, Coopers Beach, and Mangonui Harbour."
There are some lovely restaurants in the nearby village of Mangonui - famous for its "fish and chips" - including The Thai which is very popular.
Down the hill from our place is a well-stocked local shop - we call them dairies in Aotearoa (New Zealand). Known as The Cable Bay Store, it stocks a huge selection of ice-cream as well as cafe-style cabinet food and fish and chips to order.
In nearby Coopers Beach, you can find a lovely, new, local supermarket - the 4 Square - which also has a great wine and beer selection. You can find also just about any other store you would need including a bakery, beauty salon, hardware store and a liquor store etc in Coopers Beach.
Getting to my home
We have a second car which we could make available if a car swap is an option. We are a 4 hour drive by car from Auckland, with Whangārei being the halfway point where we stop to stretch our legs and get a bite to eat. There are some great eating spots; just ask us for some recommendations.
There is also at least one bus service to and from Auckland via Whangarei and Kerikeri which stops outside the nearby Cable Bay Store.
Once here, you have the perfect base to explore the surrounding wonders of the Far North, including 90 Mile Beach (official name Te-Oneroa-a-Tōhē), nearby Karikari Peninsula, the gorgeous Bay of Islands and the historic Waitangi where Te Tiriti o Waitangi was first signed.
Nearest airport
The Bay of Islands airport, near Kerikeri, is a delight and only a 45 minute drive to our place. It is also a 45 minute flight to and from Auckland, the biggest metropolitan city in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Northland Taxi Shuttles offer an airport shuttles service which would need to be booked in advance.
Getting around
Best to get around by car or walking. Just be aware though, it's a bit of an incline up a well-lit street to the well-lit apartment complex.
State Highway 10 - a NZ highway is nothing like overseas highways - is at the end of the street off our street, so not really ideal for cyclists.

Dara and her family, were the perfect house guests. Came home to a lovely tidy house. Couldn’t have asked for more from our first PLU experience ❤️
Awww, that’s so sweet. We really felt at home and having your support, with your Mum as backup, was much appreciated. 😊
Dara and Rod were the perfect guests to host in our home. Our exchange was a simultaneous house and car swap, and they looked after both as if it were their own.
Perfectly seamless exchange with Dara and her family :)
Good comms leading up to the swap and the house was left beautifully clean.
Looking forward to our stay up at their home in Cable bay at the end of the month :)
It was lovely to have Dara and Rod stay in our apartment for their first PLU experience - they were easy to communicate with and everything was left neat and tidy. Hopefully they are hooked and will be doing many more. We are looking forward to staying in their home in NZ.
What a delightful treat Lindsey's family home was. The coastal location was perfect for exploring the east coast of Northern Ireland where we have family.
Lindsey and Michael went above and beyond in assisting me with a medical issue, even though they were on vacation. Their communication was exceptional. Friendly, welcoming hosts and a lovely home and garden. Bangor is well worth a visit.
Swapping homes is an exercise in trust, and Jacky and Mike epitomise what People Like Us is all about - taking care to make sure your guests feel as welcome and at home as possible in their home. It was a pleasure to enjoy their warm, beautifully-appointed abode in a picturesque part of Aotearoa/New Zealand. This home and car swap went without a hitch and exceeded our expectations. Winter was a delightful time to experience a colder part of the country and was quite the contrast to the "Winterless North" where we usually live. We'd love to return sometime, perhaps in spring or autumn, when Wanaka shows off her varied colours.
Mike was an exemplary house guest. It was so lovely to come home to find everything in immaculate condition. Such care and consideration are much appreciated, especially as Mike had an early morning flight to get to and a bit of a drive to get to the airport.
It was also lovely that Mike got to meet some of our friends and neighbours while he was here enjoying a warmer and at times wetter winter than he is used to. Thanks, Mike.
It’s such a pleasure to host guests who look after your home as if it were their own.
Suzie and her family were respectful and appreciative of our coastal villa apartment. I hope all our exchanges go as well.
Everything went perfectly. Suzie was very communicative and responsive to all of our questions, the house was easy to access, house instructions were clear, the amenities and furnishings were all plentiful and comfortable, and we couldn’t have asked for a better “home away from home” for the last few days of our trip!
This was our first PLU exchange. Joel and Jan have set the bar very high. We were thrilled with their gorgeous apartment and the location was wonderful.
We felt like locals as soon as we arrived but the pub quiz and meal at their local, "The Toxteth", a short walk up the hill cemented our status.
Joel did an excellent job of meeting and greeting, giving us a comprehensive orientation before leaving us to enjoy our weeklong stay.
We are looking forward to their coming to stay at our place in Cable Bay, Northland, New Zealand. Would love to return to Glebe sometime.
