We live in a bright, spacious four-room apartment in Hamburg-Othmarschen, on the edge of lively Ottensen and Altona. We moved here in March 2026 and have very quickly fallen in love with both our home and the area.
Our apartment is part of a relatively new residential neighborhood built around shared courtyards. It has a lovely, relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere: there are lots of young families in the neighborhood, and you’ll often see children playing together in the courtyard. Our daughter loves being able to simply head outside and join them.
Our Home:
The apartment is approximately 110 m² including our terrace, with a wonderfully practical and spacious layout.
The heart of our home – and definitely our favorite part – is the large open-plan kitchen, dining and living area. It’s where we spend most of our time, whether we’re cooking, having long breakfasts, relaxing on the couch or sitting around the table together. The open layout makes the apartment feel particularly spacious and is perfect for family life.
There are three separate bedrooms, all roughly the same size:
* our main bedroom, which is divided into a sleeping area and a walk-in-wardrobe-style dressing area
* our daughter’s bedroom
* our home office, which also has a comfortable couch and can double as an additional sleeping or relaxing space
We also have two full bathrooms – one with a bathtub and one with a large walk-in shower – which is particularly nice when several people are staying here.
Because the building is relatively new, the apartment is very well insulated. It stays comfortable through Hamburg’s changing seasons, and the excellent sound insulation means we hear very little from our neighbors.
We’ve put a lot of love into making the apartment feel warm, comfortable and lived-in rather than simply “new.” Since we only moved in recently, we’re still adding some finishing touches and making it more and more our own.
Our terrace & courtyard:
One of the things we especially enjoy is having our own approximately 12 m² terrace. There’s already a comfortable outdoor sofa, and we’re continuing to turn the space into our little outdoor living room – somewhere to relax, eat outside, barbecue and enjoy long summer evenings.
Beyond the terrace is the shared courtyard, which gives the neighborhood a pleasantly communal feeling without sacrificing the privacy of having your own home.
The neighborhood:
We think our location offers a particularly nice combination for experiencing Hamburg: **a comfortable, calm place to come home to, while still being extremely well connected to everything the city has to offer.**
Daily life here is exceptionally easy. Two supermarkets, a bakery, pharmacy and drugstore are practically around the corner, so you can pick up groceries or anything else you need within minutes.
Public transportation is also very close, with several bus connections nearby and the S-Bahn within walking distance. From here, Hamburg city center is easily reached by train in around 15 minutes.
And one of our favorite parts of living here is having **Ottensen** so close by. It’s one of Hamburg’s liveliest and most charming neighborhoods, full of independent cafés, restaurants, little shops, bakeries and places to sit outside and watch the world go by. It’s just a short bike or bus ride from our apartment, as is Altona with its excellent transport connections.
We love that we can enjoy the energy of Ottensen and central Hamburg whenever we want it, but come home to a modern, spacious apartment in a quieter residential neighborhood.
For a longer stay in particular, we think this is a wonderful base for experiencing Hamburg not just as a visitor, but as someone who actually **lives here** – morning coffee and grocery runs, bike rides through the neighborhood, evenings in Ottensen, children playing in the courtyard, and an easy train ride into the heart of the city.
We’d love for another family, couple or individual to make themselves at home here and enjoy Hamburg as much as we do.
And two feline housemates 🐈
Our home also comes with two much-loved cats! Ideally, we’d love to exchange with someone who is happy to have them stay at home and keep them company while we’re away. They’re part of our family, so finding someone who genuinely enjoys having cats around would make an exchange especially wonderful for us.
And we’re very happy to return the favor! In fact, a reciprocal home-and-cat exchange would be pretty much perfect: we take care of your cats while enjoying your home, and you take care of ours while enjoying Hamburg.
So if you’re a fellow cat household wondering how on earth to arrange a longer home exchange without also having to find someone to look after the cats… perhaps we’ve found each other. 😊
