A Traditional Nagasaki Home Perched Above the City Lights

Welcome to our home in Tenjinmachi (天神町・てんじんまち), a quiet residential pocket in the hills of central Nagasaki. This is a genuine traditional Japanese house — tatami floors, fusuma sliding doors, and futons rolled out at night — offered to fellow travelers who'd rather live like a local than pass through like a tourist. The home comfortably sleeps 3 to 4.

Living inside a world-famous view

Nagasaki's night view is one of only three on the planet — alongside Hong Kong and Monaco — recognized as a "World's New Three Major Night View." To reach us, you'll climb 169 steps up the hillside (we've counted them more than once), and that climb is the whole secret: from our windows, the city tumbles down the slopes and glitters across the bay. Pack light, bring good legs, and you'll be rewarded every single evening. And when you want to earn an even wider panorama, several hiking trails wind up into the hills right from the neighborhood, opening onto breathtaking views out over the city and the bay.

The Home

Inside you'll find snug, light-filled tatami rooms — from cozy little 2-mat nooks to a comfortable 6-mat living-and-sleeping space — all in authentic Japanese style. Beds are traditional futons laid directly on the tatami: firm, warm, and easy to tuck away come morning. A central mini-split keeps the whole home comfortable year-round — warm through the winter and cool through Nagasaki's humid summers. The kitchen is fully equipped for everything from a quick morning miso to a proper home-cooked meal.

Bathing, the local way

Here we bathe the way Nagasaki does. Just a five-minute walk away at Nagasaki Stadium City is Yukulu, a beautiful hot-spring and sauna complex — the closest onsen to the house and an easy part of the daily routine. For something truly special, the world-class Fukunoyu sits nearby on Mount Inasa, reachable in less than half an hour via a free shuttle. The house has its own bathroom and shower as well, and we'll be straight with you: it's cold water only at home, so the onsen is where we go to warm our bones. For most guests, soaking here becomes a favorite part of the trip rather than a compromise.

Staying connected

The house doesn't have its own internet just yet (it's on our list). In the meantime, there's fast, free wifi a five-minute walk away at the Stadium City complex — the same spot as the Yukulu onsen. Part of the appeal of the home is getting away from technology to a degree. 

A neighborhood that welcomes you

Tenjinmachi is calm, traditional, and genuinely friendly — the kind of place where neighbors say hello and you settle in fast. It's peaceful up here, so if you decide to stay please show the locals a friendly smile and greeting as you walk by. 

Everything within reach

We're centrally located, a few minutes' walk from tram and bus stops that carry you anywhere you need to go, and close to Nagasaki Station, the major sights, and the brand-new Nagasaki Stadium City complex. We also keep bicycles for guests — the easiest and most fun way to get around a city built on hills and harbor.

Eat, cheer, explore

Nagasaki has one of Japan's most distinctive food cultures, shaped by centuries as the country's window to the world. Don't leave without a bowl of champon (ちゃんぽん), the local noodle specialty — and save room for castella cake. For sports, Stadium City is electric: it's home to our basketball team, the Nagasaki Velca, reigning champions of Japan's top league, as well as Nagasaki Varen, the equally electric soccer squad. As an American with ubiquitous  world class sports, I can assure you that Nagasaki game nights are something to experience. The house also makes an excellent base for day trips out across Kyushu.

My name is Hagen and this year while visiting Japan I fell in love with Nagasaki and decided to buy a small house to use for future visits. After being recommended this site by a friend, I decided it could be a great way to share my traditional home while also better supporting my heavy-travel lifestyle. I travel with my two friends Hannah and Sebastian basically full time and love to visit new places. If you are considering visiting Japan I would highly recommend you consider visiting Nagasaki as it is a beautiful city with lots of things to see and do without so many crowds as Tokyo or Kyoto. While I have never done a home exchange experience with my own home (because this is my first ever home), I have frequently shared my spaces with others via volunteering sites such as workaway as well as through backpacking sites such as bewelcome and couchsurfing.
