We live in a small town/village, Darfield, which is 40 minutes from Christchurch’s international airport and the rest that this recently rejuvenated city has to offer.
We live on the flat Canterbury plains at the foot of the Southern Alps. Very close to lots of outdoor activities, such as hiking tracks, mountain biking, jet boating, skiing (Late June - August), hot air ballooning. Our property is in a lovely community, All the neighbouring properties are a similar 1 acre size, so lots of space. Neighbours are all friendly if any local support is needed.
The local small supermarket, produce store, bakery, cafes are less than a 10 minute walk from home. A great town for biking around, our bikes are available for your use.
A car is necessary for travel here. But with it so many options are available as a day trip. The mountains, the river, the beach are all within an hour. Further afield, it's easy to head right over the spectacular alps right to the west coast within 3 hours.
Our home is very family friendly, with a trampoline, a climbing frame and lots of grass to play. We live in a very child friendly community, with multiple playgrounds, a super friendly library, and a 8 minute bike ride to the local community pool. (Dec-Feb only).
We have a large, sunny living room, with log fire for cozy winter warmth. Our kitchen, dining area has recently been upgraded, with new induction stovetop, oven, microwave and double dishdrawer. It also has a great view out over our orchard, and morning sun streams into the country style dining room.
We have three generous bedrooms, a large master with queen bed and sliding door opening to the north sunshine and view of Southern Alps. The second bedroom also has a queen-sized bed and sliding door and shares the same view of the Alps. Our third bedroom catches all the afternoon sun, (although has blackout blind for summer heat), and has two single beds and a giant world map on the wall. Perfect for kids to feel connected with home.
Portacot, highchair and pushchair all available on request.
We have a family bathroom, with shower and bath on schedule to be remodeled in 2020, more pictures to follow then. Also a separate toilet.
And a separate large laundry with washing machine and dryer.
Everything is ground level and flat in our home. Very family friendly and accessible.
At the far end of our property we do have a water race which could potentially be an issue for very small children. However, we moved here when our youngest super adventurer was 1.5 and although he loved exploring the back garden, he learnt the boundary of water race fairly quickly. It's not deep, so fairly safe for older kids with supervision.
We have a large trampoline and climbing frame, along with rope swing and lots of space to play outside for kids. Also Lego and lots of games and books for inside fun.
First aid kit
Suitable for infants under 2
Suitable for children ages 2-12
Pets not allowed
We live in a small town (our international friends call it a village), in which everything is a short walk or bike ride from home. (10 min walk, 2 min car trip). Darfield has a well known bakery, several modern cafes, a new small supermarket, a fresh produce shop, butchery, two petrol stations, fantastic library full of local information and a ski hire shop among it's highlights. We also have a tennis club at the end of our road, and local rugby, cricket field and netball courts further along that street.
25 minutes away we have a thriving, growing town called Rolleston, where we head for our main groceries and most things we need, or 45 minutes will take you right into Christchurch with all the attractions and shops that the largest city in the South Island offers.
Heading the other direction will take you to several great golf courses, locally 10 minutes to Hororata Golf Club or 30 minutes to the more well known Terrace Downs, which also hosts a spa and lovely restaurant.
The Southern Alps offer many opportunities for hikes, mountain biking, rock climbing or skiing, within an hour from our home.
A car is essential for living in Darfield. It is very simple to rent one from the airport on your way here.
