General overview
I have lived and visited elsewhere in Mexico but La Paz has captured my heart. Unlike its more touristy neighbor to the south (Cabo San Lucas), La Paz feels Mexican but with a unique sense of calm. It’s not loud and bustling like Mexico City, but it doesn’t feel rural either. It’s alive with street art, color, sunsets, gentle waves, and kind people. The Baja landscapes of saguaro and turquoise waters are all around but you might just opt to relax by the plunge pool on a warm night or go for a stroll on the malecón.
Depending on the season you can swim with whale sharks, watch the humpbacks breach, go snorkeling, fish for dorado, release turtle hatchlings, go kite surfing, or simply enjoy the numerous beaches.
If you like ceviche or fish tacos, this is your spot. If you don’t, order the molcajete.
A day trip I would not miss is Todos Santos. It is one of Mexico’s “Magical Towns”, recognized by the government for its picturesque character. It’s just over an hour away. I stayed overnight on a mango farm and am happy to point you in that direction as well.
Balandra beach is mesmerizing - a crescent of white sand against volcanic rock. Its shallow waters seem to stretch on indefinitely. Just up the road is Playa Tecolote, with its kiosks, beachfront bars, and musicians. La Paz has something for everyone. Come find your peace!
The space
This is what is known as a casita, a small home typically built on the property of a larger residence. However, in my case, there is no larger residence. It’s a simple one bedroom home with a full bathroom, a laundry room, a living room, a kitchen, and a rear patio with plunge pool.
There is no house on the lot behind so when you sit on the covered patio by the pool it feels very private.

Neighbourhood
El Centenario is very peaceful and safe. Many expats live here, but many Mexican families do also. It is an upscale neighborhood but the roads remain unpaved. El Comitan is the closest beach where guests walk their dogs and look across the bay at La Paz.
There are a few restaurants, a small grocery, and a bakery. El Centenario is built on a hill and the restaurant at the top has a bar, a pool, and lovely views of the water and the city lights at night.
Getting to my home
If you are coming from Los Cabos, you can take a bus, taxi or shuttle. The best option is simply to rent your own vehicle at the airport you fly into.
Nearest airport
La Paz has its own airport, which is calmer and less busy than flying into Los Cabos. However, the Los Cabos (SJD) airport has more frequent flights and they are often cheaper.
Getting around
Unfortunately you will need to rent a car as El Centenario is 15 minutes outside of downtown La Paz. A car is also useful for visiting nearby beaches such as Balandra and Tecolote. A day or weekend trip to Todos Santos, one of Mexico’s pueblos mágicos is highly recommended also.

It’s me and three little ones. Before kids, I traveled regularly. I am trying to teach them about community and the beauty of talking to strangers.
People Like Us is the world's most trusted home exchange community. We believe in sharing, trust, generosity, respect, communication, equality, cooperation, honesty, hospitality, friendship, flexibility and adventure. We take pride in our homes and we care about the environment in which we live: our village, city, country and our planet. We care about the ethos of home exchange and we do it because we love the experience and the friendships that it generates.
La Paz has incredible murals and street art. Also Mexico’s screen printing tradition makes for some wonderful and affordable souvenirs.
More street art by Ulises Martínez, a personal favorite.
El malecón goes the whole length of the city. On one side you have restaurants and on the other a boardwalk.
This ceviche from a simple kiosk near the malecón was fresh, spicy and delicious!
Sunrise at el comitan beach near the house
Baja has gorgeous sunsets
Balandra beach is spectacular. Also very shallow.
Balandra is just outside the city but feels a world away
During whale shark season it is possible to swim with these gentle giants
There is a small playground in el Centenario but my kids prefer this one on the malecón.
Playa Tecolote has small bars, street vendors and live music with a very Baja vibe
Todos Santos, pueblo mágico, is a perfect weekend escape, one hour and 10 minutes away!
Visit the sea turtle rescue operation at sunset and you can volunteer to release the day’s hatchlings to the sea.
In less than an hour you can drive through the desert to La Ventana where you can watch the colorful kite sufers on the turquoise waters or dip into the saguaros for a margarita
Just past La Ventana is a natural hot spring on the beach where the Sea of Cortez cools the hot waters and you soak in your own personal rock pool.
If whale sharks are not your thing, you can also see the Humpbacks.
