This home is like going back in time. I love to sit on the front porch and listen to the frogs after a thunderstorm. I love that the island’s 3000 horses roam the streets eating mangos. I love walking 5 minutes to a calm beach and collecting sea glass with my children. I love walking 3 blocks for fresh bread from the panadería each morning. I love watching the sunset and being woken by roosters.
There is a wildlife preserve on part of the island and my children love our tropical walks where they spot iguanas, hermit crabs, and of course, wild horses. You can snorkel or visit the bioluminescent bay. Beaches for weeks, including playa negra for black sand.
The space
In frank terms, the house is dated. The tile in the bathrooms needs updating, as do the kitchen cabinets. The patio needs landscaping. If you need modern things, this is not the house for you. The pace of life on Vieques is slow. The air is humid. Some patience is required.
Guest access
Two steps to get up, all one floor.
Notes
The house is across from a church so do be aware that many cars park on the street and sometimes the colmado plays music.

Neighbourhood
The house is a five minute walk from the ferry. There are two groceries, a panadería, several art galleries and restaurants in the same radius. It is very walkable. Most importantly, Sea Glass Beach is 2 blocks away. This house is one of the most centrally located ones on Vieques. Be sure to go to Rising Roost!
Getting to my home
Just get off the ferry and walk up! I did it with 3 kids and bags. It’s 5 minutes.
Nearest airport
Vieques has an airport, or you can fly into San Juan, then taxi to Ceiba for ferry.
Getting around
Many people rent golf carts or jeeps to explore the island. A car is very useful, but not necessary. A taxi can take you to Esperanza to visit the bioluminescent bay. The car rental is 3 minutes walk so I typically rent for a few days, return, and rent again when I want to explore more.

It’s me and three little ones. Before kids, I traveled regularly. I am trying to teach them about community and the beauty of talking to strangers.
