In February 2026, we spent a wonderful week in Durbanville at the spacious home of Chris & Michelle. They are an incredibly friendly couple who welcomed us with open arms. From the very first moment, we felt genuinely welcome and completely at home. They even assured us we could use everything in their house. Such generosity and trust.
Before leaving the next morning to spend a few days with their daughter and grandchildren, they shared lots of great tips about the area. Those local recommendations truly made a difference.
Their home is very comfortable and located in a small, secure community, close to Cape Town, Stellenbosch and the coast. It’s the perfect base for creating unforgettable memories.
Following Michelle’s advice, we did what locals do: after strolling around the Waterfront, we watched the sunset at Saunders Rock Beach. A beautiful experience. We also loved the cosy atmosphere in Church Street and Dorp Street in Stellenbosch, and the stunning surroundings of the town. Postcard Café was a lovely stop, and we really enjoyed the botanical garden along Jonkershoek Road, with its impressive collection of 300 trees from around the world.
The wine estates in the area of Stellenbosch are truly exceptional. We visited Bartinney, Capsensis, Tokara and Delaire Graff. At Delaire Graff, we not only enjoyed the fantastic Chardonnay, but also admired their impressive art collections. Very much to our taste.
We also spent time along the coast, enjoying the wide white sandy beaches and the view of Table Mountain at Bloubergstrand, Yzerfontein and Big Bay. The ocean was freezing cold, but very refreshing on the hottest days.
Closer to home, we wandered through the beautiful rose garden in Durbanville, visited Meerendal Wine Estate, had dinner at the fine dining restaurant at De Grendel, and enjoyed lunch at Diemersdal — all in Durbanville. Even the ice cream shop in the local shopping centre became a favourite stop.
But what will stay with us most is the warmth and enthusiasm of Michelle and Chris. At 4:15 in the morning, they stood at the front door to wave us goodbye as we left for the airport. A small gesture, but incredibly touching.
Thank you again, Chris & Michelle, for your kindness and hospitality. This was home swapping at its very best.
