Neighbourhood
Our home is walking distance (approx 100m / 3min walk) to the end of the street where you'll find a small grocery shop and hairdresser.
5 minutes drive to local Glengarry Shopping Centre containing various restaurants, pharmacy, dentist, clothing store and grocery stores like Woolworths & Pick n Pay amongst others - open and undercover parking.
Just up the road from there (2min) you'll find more malls and shops: Spar for groceries, restaurants, petrol garages, etc.
10min down the road are various big malls of which the largest is Cape Gate Sopping Centre with cinemas, Pick n Pay and Checkers and a gazillion other shops. Also Makro, Giant and Spar opposite the road.
From our home approx 15min in the other direction is another very big mall: Tyger Valley Centre with cinemas, and Willowbridge Centre opposite to it.
In Durbanville town (village) are many malls, shops, restaurants, butcheries, Medi Clinic Hospital, etc. 10min. Durbanville is located on the Durbanville Wine Route, you'll be spoiled for choice. The wine farms don't only do tastings and sell wine, but have some lovely restaurants and wine tours. Many have mountain bike, hiking tracks and park walks.
Durbanville also is a quick drive to the Stellenbosch or Franschoek wine routes - also has a wine Tram so you won't need to drive. Just outside Stellenbosch you'll find the Hillcrest Berry Orchard and restaurant, Strawberry farms, Spice Route near Paarl, Drakenstein Lion Park, Giraffe House, Spier Wild Bird Sanctuary, etc and in Sonerset West you'll find the Cheetah Outreach Project (about R10 to enter, but more to take photos with them - remember to book beforehand).
The N1 highway is approx 10min from our home. That gives you easy access to:
Stellenbosch (40min) / Franschoek / Somerset West / Gordons Bay / Grabouw / Hermanus (Whale Route/ wine valley) or in the other direction to Cape Town (city) approx 25min depending in traffic. That's where you'll find the V& A Waterfront (stand up paddle rental, Canal cruise, Harbour cruise, ocean cruise, high tea at various Waterfront hotels, malls, restaurants, scratch patch, etc), Kirstenbosch Gardens with restaurants or picnic, Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, Aquarium (dive with the sharks), Cape Castle, Noon Gun, Open Top Bus Tours (hop om hop off), and adjacent scenic drive from Sea Point to Camps Bay, Llundudno, Hout Bay, Chapmans Peak Drive, Noordhoek, Kommetjie, Fish Hoek, Simon's Town (Boulders Beach penguins). Or from the city head over Kloof Road. Drive to Signal Hill for a spectacular view of Robben Island, city, Sea Point, etc, or park and hike up Lions Head. You can also choose to take a return cable cart up & down Table Mountain or hike up and cable cart down. On top of Table Mountain is abseiling, hiking, free guided tours, explore in your own, a restaurant, shops, etc and from signal hill you can do paragliding. You'll also pass the mega shopping centre: Canal Walk at Century City - 20min from our home and also Grand West Casino in Goodwood where the ice rink is located. Just too much to do and see to mention here. I'll compile a file. Make sure to spend enough time here.
We suggest you get a Cape Town City Pass which includes entry to most things to do and see and citywide transport and open top buss and boat trips. Great value for money.
Beach: Blouberg, Big Bay or Melkbos (both awesome surf spots) - 20min. Kitesurfing / surfboard rentals.
Or head to Strand beach: 40min or Muizenberg (surfers paradise).
Nearest airport
Cape Town International.
Getting Around
Rent a car at the airport or anywhere else. .
It'll be more expensive than renting a car I think, but Uber and Bolt is readily available.
There is a bus stop opposite the shop at the end of the road, but public transport in South Africa isn't great except within in the city region. I would not recommend taking public transport unless you're in the city where the rapid busses run.

People Like Us Local Guide
We work from home. We'd love to meet up, make friends, answer questions, point you in the right direction, have coffee, etc.
Many thanks Michelle for having us. We had a lovely stay. Communication from the start was easy and fluent. Michelle's home is beautiful and she goes out of her way to make you welcome. Recommend as an exchange partner.
Thanks again, hoping to meet up in December when you visit the UK
What a lovely experience we had with Michelle and Chris. Their beautiful house is on a quiet cul de sac and is so comfortable that we just made ourselves right at home.
Very well located for exploring the beautiful winelands.
We went out for pizza one evening and were treated to some yummy food made by Michelle.the rest of our stay. I want that tuna salad recipe!!
We even attended their Sunday church service which was inspirational and welcoming.
They are the most helpful and fun couple ever.
I hope we can host them one day in the future.
Thank you to our new friends.

Oh guys, I'm not crying, you're crying 😂 Love you both. Enjoy the last 3 days of African sun and hospitality. Come again soon.
Michelle & Chris were wonderful host and beautiful people
Their home is in a great location - about 30 mins to town 20 mins to the coast and 20 - 40 mins to many wineries
A stunning home with everything you will need
Thankyou both so much for your wonderful hospitality I had the best time it was Lekker 😀
Dunkee
Hopefully you can come to Australia sometime🐨🦘🌎
Oh Terri, thank you. You were an absolute delight to host. We had a lot of fun. And if you can use "lekker" in a sentence, then we've done our job well 😄
Wow, this is the second time we have done an exchange with Chris and Michelle. It was just wonderful to see them again, and we consider them really good friends. Their home is amazing, and South Africa is the most breathtaking and extraordinary country to visit. We highly recommend an exchange with Michelle and Chris. We can’t wait to see them again, hopefully in Canada, or really anywhere in the world.
If you don't come to Cape Town soon, we'll have to meet mid-way in the world!
We had a wonderful globe exchange with Michelle and Chris. Firstly they are kind, generous people who are a lot of fun and we were lucky enough to spend a couple of days together and they are now new friends.
The house had everything we needed, and they gave us lots of helpful ideas of places to visit and even drove us around to show us where things are.
It's a great area, close to wine farms, Cape Town and even the beach and we just loved it !
They'll always be welcome in our house in Scotland and we would highly recommend this couple, their house, and the area. It was just great ....
Thank you so much! Muriel & Paul. We miss you already. Thank you for spoiling us with wonderful gifts and friendship. Can't wait to see you again. Our doors will always be open to you.
Michelle & Chris are the most kind, generous, friendly, fun people you can imagine. They warmly hosted us in their beautiful home. They took us on fabulous tours all over their amazing city and the surrounding areas. We enjoyed fabulous meals with them. We miss them already, and really look forward to hosting them in our home.
Keith & Heather, we are family now. We enjoyed every minute of laughing and exploring with you guys. Your are both simply delightful. Come back as often as you want.
Michelle and Chris are more than guests, they're more like friends. They're so fun and easy to be around, kind and thoughtful and they made the most of their time here exploring round about.
Looking forward to seeing you next year.....
We are counting the days!
Michelle and Chris stayed with us as a hospitality exchange for 2 nights but we wish it could have been longer! They are such lovely, friendly people who were a pleasure to host. Communication was great with them before and during the stay and they were super low maintenance while they were with us. They tolerated my daughter asking lots of questions and left us with some lovely gifts from South Africa to remind us of their stay.
We will be planning a South Africa trip in a few years and we're already looking forward to meeting back up with them :)
Can't wait to welcome you to our beautiful city!
From the second we made contact through Facebook and then messaged in the platform I knew this would be an easy hosting. We loved seeing Michelle and Chris in real life. They are super easy and very grateful house guests., and whilst they did not expect this, we shared a lovely dinner and breakfast with them. we had so much to talk about, there were no awkward silences at all.
We are very excited to have new friends in Cape Town to help us plan our visit and we look forward to seeing then both soon.
until next time - Karen & Scott XXX
The Mother City is waiting in all it's splendour. Can't wait to wrlcome you in Cape Town!
3 nights with Paul & Muriel in their beautiful 200+yr home outside Glasgow. They visited us in Cape Town last year, but we never dreamed we'd be standing in their home in Scotland. This was simply amazing!!!
We walked into a Christmas wonderland - wood burning fire, the air smelling amazing from the Christmas candles, hot homemade soup, cappuccino and warm hearts. It was not easy to say goodbye. Some friendships were just meant to be.
We tried our best to see as much of Scotland as we can over our short visit. Edinburgh was beautiful, but the real magic happened on our 10-hr roadtrip up into the Scottish highlands. We started at Loch Lomond and then took the longest route we could find, as close as possible to the water right up to Oban & Appin, down to Glencoe and home via Sterling. Their home is do well located to explore Scotland.
The lochs were so so beautiful. We drove via the quaintest towns, saw the most beautiful houses, churches, castles AND...... found the Highland cows! Adorable with those fringes!!!!!
The valleys, waterfalls and mountains where the James Bond movie was shot, was magestic. We even saw snow on the mountains.
Paul & Muriel's home is the perfect location to explore Scotland. We had the most wonderful time.
The beauty of Scotland cannot be captured on photos. You need to explore for yourself. No better way than to stay in this lovely couple's home. What a privilege.
We stayed for 2 nights with Paul, Jane, and their daughter, Chloë in Sheffield, Peak District, UK. They live in a beautiful suburb outside the busy university city.
We celebrated my birthday with them by visiting the beautiful Chatsworth House.
Chatsworth's 1st building was built on the estate in 1552. Now dressed for Christmas, it was a Winter Wonderland! The Duke (now his 80's) still lives on the estate. I can highly reccommend a visit here over December.
Keep in mind it's pitch dark in the UK by 4pm in Dec, so we could explore the Christmas lights, market and "house" with our home exchange hosts, and still make it in time for Chloë's school Christmas Carol night in the beautiful 1800's St John's Church in Sheffield. (I would definitely classify this church as a cathedral, it's massive.)
Paul & Jane were such gracious hosts, welcoming us in with chocolate and then surprised us with a warm stew with dumplings - our 1st taste of dumplings and it was yummy! We love Christmas time, and appreciated the Christmas bedding - such a sweet touch🎄 Their home is warm, comfy and homely. The area is simply beautiful.
Our favourite parts of the day were our chats with Chloë on our bed early mornings. She's a bundle of joy! We're going to miss her energy.
We can highly reccommend a stay at Paul & Jane's. Especially if you like hiking - the area is breathtaking.
Our 1-night hospitality stay with Scott & Karen (and their adorable dog, George), was more like a homecoming! We were received with open arms and the most beautiful meal and great company.
Their home is exquisite, warm and welcoming. Flecknoe was all we could only hope for - breathtaking English countryside, space to breathe and beautiful architecture.
Karen is the High Sheriff of Warwickshire, working for the King. Being pastors back home in our own country, we were fascinated with the level of community upliftment, involvement and support that they're involved in.
We chatted like old friends catching up. Scott and Karen are wonderful hosts and we hope to welcome them in our corner of the world in future.
PLU people are the BEST! We are blown away.
In their region:
We left London, drove via Windsor, the Cotswolds (picture-pretty), meandering through quaint villages in the English countryside to end up at the Warwick Castle and then to Flecknoe where they live.
In the Cotswolds we loved Birbury (think fairytale books) and stumbled upon Shakespeare's home and a Peter Rabbit Shop in the beautiful Stratford Upon Avon.
This morning we went to Rugby (under which Flecknoe falls). Being South African, this was quite the momentous occasion. Rugby quite literally is the birth place of rugby, complete with a rugby school and the Webb Ellis Rugby Football Museum and the home of the 1st rugby ball. Quite te adventure.
We can highly reccommend a visit to the beautiful Flecknoe and the even more wonderful hosts who'll receive you like family.
We stayed 4 nights in total.
Moyee is the most wonderful host.
We had the absolute best time in the most central area of Trafalgar, city of Westminister, London.
MoYee's flat is literally located a 1min walk to Embankment underground on the one end, and 1min walk to Charring Cross underground on the other end of her street. Location, location, location. We could not have dreamed of getting it any better. When she said, "trust me, it's central", we never imagined it to be this central. We walked 5min to the London Eye, aquarium, Thames boat trips, etc, or 8min to Trafalgar Square.
Strand Street is 1min away with all the shops you'll need. But... right next to her flat is a little shop, restaurant, curio shops and much more.
We had the time of our lives!!!!
MoYee's flat is exquitite. We had a very spacious bedroom and private bathroom. Her flat is gorgeously decorated and has views towards the Thames river with a beautiful large garden out front.
As a host, we were spoiled by MoYee! We travelled for around 34 hours from leaving our house and arrived to a warm home-cooked Chinese Curry and wide open arms greeting us home.
If we could give stars, then MoYee would get 5 stars 🌟 🌟🌟🌟🌟 We hope that we can welcome her to Cape Town one day to return her kindness and generosity.
Thank you MoYee for affording us this beautiful time in your wonderful city. We especially enjoyed the Christmas lights everywhere. Without PLU, this would not have been possible on our South African Rands. We feel extremely blessed.

Your new Cape Town friends,
Chris & Michélle
Heloise is the most wonderful exchange partner. Her communication is excellent and her genuine interest quickly resulted in a friendship we'll treasure for years to come.
We can highly recommend Heloise as an exchange partner. She's the friend you'll think you've known forever.
She keeps in regular contact and is an absolute joy to deal with.
She pays great attention to detail and walks the extra mile.
We cannot wait to connect with her in the UK this December and hope we'll have the joy of meeting them at the airport in Cape Town quickly.
Highest recommendation from us.
It was such a joy to host Gabriella and John. This time of the year It's very busy at church, as it's the start of our school year in South Africa and at church. We agreed ahead of time that we'll not be able to take them around this time, but they had no problem exploring and meeting up for dinner, etc.
We highly recommend you to say YES, if ever contacted for a swap. We had the best time and only wish it was longer.
Such lovely, easy-going, considerate guests. Looking forward to hosting them again in future when things are less hectic our side and we can paint Cape Town red together.
Definitely a beautiful friendship born through a short hospitality stay.
It was an absolute delight to host Terri for a week's hospitality stay. We had a great time together. I can highly recommend Terri. She is a wonderful guest.
Terri has been travelling a lot and has visited 71 countries. We loved chatting and asking about her world travels.
Looking forward to meet again.
PS: Terri was our 2023 Secret Santa - how special to meet in person.
Hello
Yes it al started with Secret Santa
I was very happy to have South African's as my recipient of my goodies. South Africa is one of my most favourite countries to visit in the world
Best wishes - hope to see you down under one day
Heather & Keith are simply wonderful! They'll treat your home as their own. Do try to connect with them - you'll have lifelong friends.
We highly recommend them.
Muriel & Paul is an amazing couple! We spent a day with them before they came to stay having a braai together, and also spent the last day together having lunch at a wine farm in Durbanville. Can't believe they're back in Scotland, we miss them already! We laughed and shared stories and photos.
Paul & Muriel are great exchange partners, we'd love for them to come back to bisit us any time. It didn't take long to become good friends, they are missed, hope we'll see each other again soon.
We can highly recommend them if you're looking for great people to exchange with. They took care of our house as if it were there own. We hope to one day visit them at their gorgeous home in Scotland.
Thanks a lot for your lovely comments. We loved that we were able to meet with you and get to know you and I'm sure we'll meet up again somewhere. Another new PLU friendship is formed and we really appreciated all your helpful information, generosity and thoughtfulness.
We love staying in your home, your great neighbours, it's a fantastic area and would love to come back sometime. You're always welcome in Scotland....
Keith and Heather are the most amazing people! A minute after you've met them you'll be friends for life.
They are easy going, super nice and overall just a delight. We had the time of our lives exploring and relaxing together.
They are extremely well travelled. They gave us so many tips from their wealth of information.
I can highly recommend you to host them in swap with them. They'll take care of your place like it is their own.
We sincerely hope they'll return for another visit.
What a joy!
