The Space
The casita has a sitting/tv area, a well equiped kitchenette, bathroom, sleeping nook and large closet/storage space. It has a large glass door facing the view of the lake and volcano. The setting is tranquil, rural yet just a 10 minute drive to the large town of Tilaran with all amenities.
Guest Access
Ground level with parking.
Notes
We live at a higher elevation where the temperatures are comfortable year around. 22-30 C. 75-85 F. We don’t need AC as the cross ventilation keeps the buildings cool. There is lush foliage, many birds, monkeys, if you’re lucky a sloth! It’s very safe here - a great place to use as a base, or stay home and relax.
If you're staying longer than a week we can offer cleaning - wash and change sheets and towels, clean kitchen, bathroom and floors. $25 or 12500 colones. We can arrange the time. The end of stay cleaning fee is $50 or 25000 colones.
Personal laundry is $3 or 1500 col. per load time by arrangement.

Neighbourhood
Our neighborhood is rural, with pastureland and forest. You can go on nature walks every day, and may see monkeys, all kinds of birds and gorgeous foliage. There are recreational opportunities on the lake - paddle boarding, kayaking, catamaran tours, etc. Tennis and Pickleball are just 5 minutes away. There are walking trails all around and we’re very close to water activities including paddle boarding, kayaking, lake tours etc. The location is within day trip distance to many desirable destinations, including beaches, hot springs, great hikes, waterfalls, hanging bridges, ziplines, river rafting etc. We also have a variety of restaurants closeby.
Getting to my home
We are a little over an hour from the Liberia Airport (LIR) which is small and easy to navigate, and 3 1/2 hrs. From the main airport in San Jose (SJO). There is a bus from near the San Jose airport to Tilaran. A private driver can bring you from Liberia.
If you rent a car, WAZE will bring you here.
Nearest airport
Liberia (LIR) is the closest and easiest to navigate airport, just over an hour away.
Getting Around
It is possible to stay without a car, but requires learning the bus system and schedules. A car gives more access to many sites, and if you prefer there are professional drivers available to take you on scheduled trips for a fee.
We will likely be home if you are visiting the casita and can assist with grocery runs and other local errands.

We had the pleasure of hosting Jamie, Marco & their family and I couldn’t have asked for better guests. During their stay, they treated our home as if it were their own, which I greatly appreciated. Communication was always clear and prompt, making the entire exchange process smooth and enjoyable.
I would highly recommend Jamie & Marco to any future hosts. They are truly a wonderful guests, and we look forward to many more exchanges in the future!
Jamie and her family were lovely guests! The communication was kind and clear, they took great care of my home and left it in great condition. They are welcome back anytime! Thanks for being our first guests :)
Lovely couple who took great care of our home. It was so nice to meet them! They're welcome back any time. We're really looking forward to going to their place in Costa Rica in the future!
Jamie and family left our home in good condition, and left money for a broken item. They enjoyed their family time in our home and we'd welcome them back.
This was our second time exchanging with Jamie and we loved it even more!
The house is located in a special spot with sweeping views of Lake Arenal - whilst there we had almost a clear day and could see Arenal Volcano in the distance. It's also fun to pop over (5 minute drive) to Lake Arenal Brewery, had a bite to eat and watched the kite surfers on the lake.
For us the highlight of our trip is being able to take our dogs with us - they all love to be part of the pack with Jamie's 5 dogs.
Thanks again for a great exchange!
We had the best time at Jamie and Marco’s guest house! It was in the most beautiful location and felt like waking up in paradise. We were able to take day trips to see sloths, go to hot springs, go on a chocolate tour and do hanging bridges. Our kids especially loved their sweet dogs and cats and seeing their horse. We would highly recommend reaching out to Jamie if you are interested in visiting Costa Rica.
Where to start?? I think I have to mention the VIEW first - Jamie & Marco's home is positioned to have the most amazing view of Lake Arenal. Everything else was secondary to the view.
Their home is a lovely, custom home that feels like home the minute you walk through the door and comes equipped with all the mod cons you can need. Clean & tidy and very comfortable beds. We also appreciated having the option to pay for a housekeeper to clean upon our departure, as we needed to depart early and that didn't leave us much time to clean.
Their five dogs & two cats were all characters and while they had their own sitter - it was a blast when we walked our dogs (3) and theirs joined us.
I know this won't be the last time we stay at Jamie & Marco's - we are already discussing the future!
Jamie and Marco's place near Tilaran was a great introduction to Costa Rica . Communication was excellent before and during our stay. There was lots of info in the house about the local area , shops , places , walks ect.
The house was wonderful with light, comfort and equipped with everything needed.
The view of the lake was breathtaking.
The dogs and cats were delightful and our son fell in love with them. He remembers all their names.
We went on local walks , kayaking on the lake, walks around the Arenal volcano. Some days we just relaxed in the house and pool whilst taking in the views, sounds of birds and monkeys.
We will never forget our stay in Tilaran and if Jamie and Family ever come to the UK they would be very welcome. Ania, Ann and Fionn
We had a great time in Jamie and Marcos Studio, perfect size for two people.
Our host gave some good advice on things to do in the area. It's a great place to explore the north of the country. But you don't need to go far to see wildlife. A short walk from the house showed us toucans, howler monkeys and a great variety of birds. This was a globe exchange. Thanks very much to our host for everything.
We just spent an incredible 3 nights at Jamie’s home…well, technically next door, but the exchange was amazing! Her husband, Marco welcomed us and we stayed in a beautiful home with an amazing view and every amenity we needed. We loved walking down the hill on a road and seeing toucans and howler monkeys and other birds. The Arenal lake and volcano were amazing to see with the changing weather and views.
We also took a side trip to Piedra de Indio waterfall and had a blast with the owner of the property, Alejandro. We were then fed a great typical Costa Rican meal by his wife.
We highly recommend visiting this part of Costa Rica and loved every minute.

We had a great time at Shannon and Mike's unit in Playa Hermosa. Shannon communicated everything and was available for questions and information. The unit is clean and comfortable, with a plunge pool that's just what you need to cool off. The house is conveniently located just a few blocks from the beach where we spent most days. This is a perfect place to kick back and enjoy the pure vida!
Feedback for Marina·Non-Reciprocal exchange·7 nights
Marina's home was perfect for our family! It felt private, surrounded by tropical landscaping. We, the grandparents, slept in the casita and our daughter's family of 4 stayed in the house. We loved everything about the house - especially the pool for the littles because it had a large wading depth area. It was very kid friendly. Yaya the kitty was the sweetest. We also loved the local beaches and restaurants and walkability of the area. and we have to mention the chickens with many delicious eggs! It couldn't have been better!

I unfortunately didn't have the opportunity to meet Shannon and Mike, but was able to communicate with them via PLU, which was all positive. . As reported by the person caring for our property, they were wonderful guests - friendly, responsible and left the house neat and tidy. They even walked out dogs and set up a new TV for us when ours met it's time. I hope to meet Shannon and Mike in the future and arrange more exchanges!
Feedback for Ania·Non-Reciprocal exchange·18 nights
Ania, Ann and Fionn were delightful guests! The communicated well, and left our place clean and tidy. I really loved that they stayed in contact with us during their stay, sending pictures of their adventures and reporting on our animals! I would definitely recommend this lovely family to anyone!
Feedback for Allen·Non-Simultaneous exchange·11 nights
The apartment was clean and efficient. It was well located for public transit to all of the areas in Seattle we wanted to visit. Allen and Malini were wonderful hosts! The were most helpful and communicative. I look forward to their visit to our part of the world!
Jamie and Marco were awesome and so flexible to stay in our lower level apartment instead of the main home. https://peoplelikeus.world/en/properties/13315 . Great to have you stay with us!
Feedback for Judy·Non-Reciprocal exchange·8 nights
We were so fortunate to be able to stay in Judy and Larry’s fabulous home for a week! It was the perfect spot to spend time with our family. The house is incredible - beautiful home in stunning location with ocean view. Plus the weather was perfect for spending days on the beach. Thank you Judy and Larry for making your home available. It was such a treat!
Mike and Majbritt were wonderful guests! They were easy going, friendly, communicated well, and gave our dogs a few walks! They left the casita clean and tidy. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them!
Feedback for Marcella·Simultaneous exchange·3 nights
Marcella’s home is wonderful! It’s spacious, and comfortable with every amenity you could need or want. The outside areas of the house are full of lovely plants, and the 180 view of the mountains from the patio and lap pool area is gorgeous. We explored the area a bit - lush countryside, nurseries, and good restaurants abound. There are plenty of day trips here - hikes, animal rescue parks, waterfalls, the beach and even the city if you like.

We are Jamie and Marco, a couple who have retired to Costa Rica from Washington State in the US where we had a custom home building business (Jamie-architect, Marco-builder). We love to host visitors as well as travel to explore new places.
