The space
Our home in South Orange, New Jersey is just a short ride from midtown Manhattan, New York City. It dates to the 1880's and is a key property on the National Registry of Historic Buildings. Although just a 25 minute train ride from Manhattan, NYC, the property has a private in-ground pool and garden area.
Our home was recently redecorated in a mid-century modern style, while respecting and highlighting the Victorian architecture.

Our first floor includes a library, dining room, living room, kitchen, and formal entry hall. There is a large kitchen with a custom designed french Lacanche Range, marble countertops, a butlers pantry with wine fridge and an eat-in breakfast nook. The second floor has three bedrooms. The master bedroom with a queen bed and full bath is on this floor along with a queen guest room and a third bedroom with a queen size bed. There is also a recently renovated full hall bath.
The third floor has three bedrooms, each with a full-size bed. The third floor also has its own bathroom, with a shower and claw-foot tub.
The front of our house has a deep wrap around porch that is a wonderful spot to enjoy your morning coffee or afternoon cocktails. The porch is furnished with outdoor furniture and a double porch swing.
The gardener will come once per week to care for the yard and a cleaning/maid service is available to assist you.
The vehicle available for exchange includes a BMW x3.
The outdoor garden area includes a private in-ground pool with chaise lounges, a dining area and an outdoor grill.
We also have a basement level one bedroom apartment with a separate entrance at the rear of the house that can be made available for non-simultaneous exchanges.

Our house is 3 stories, requiring quite a bit of stair climbing.

Neighbourhood
We live in a New York City suburban town that allows for easy access to Manhattan as well as the New Jersey beach areas. Our town has many nice shops, a theater, a beer garden, several pubs and cafes, many nice restaurants and several art galleries. We are a short walk or quick drive to a commuter train that will take you to midtown Manhattan, NYC within 25 minutes. During the summer months, you can also drive and spend a pleasant day at the New Jersey beach shore to enjoy the beautiful waters of the Atlantic Ocean. It is also possible to take trips to Washington, DC, Philadelphia, or Boston.
Getting to my home
We are 9 blocks from the South Orange mid-town direct New Jersey transit train station. This is a direct train line to Penn Station, mid-town Manhattan, NYC. We are 20 minutes from Newark (EWR) airport.

Newark airport is a 15-20 minute drive from our home.
Getting around
NYC is best reaches by train. We can also Include a vehicle in the exchange for travel around NJ or to points further away.

Jen & Jerry’s home was beautiful, with so much history, beautifully furnished, comfortable and cozy. The village of South Orange was equally beautiful, it literally looked like something out of the movies. I walked around the town several times and the people were super friendly. We were able to use their vehicle BMW M3 which made it so possible to explore the areas and go grocery shopping easily. I went walking around South Mountain, beautiful forest only 15 min away, and Trader Joes also about 15 min to load up on yummy treats! They live close to South Orange train station, just about 5 min drive or 20min walk, with New Jersey transit that goes straight to Penn St NY, approximately every hour. So easy to navigate and we went to NYC every day and explored one or two areas each day. Jen was excellent with communicating about any questions we had, even left us a lovely welcome gift. Lots of great information about the local maps, where to shop & eat; house manual was very comprehensive. This was our first exchange and we had an amazing experience at O’Leary residence ! -
Jen and Jerry’s home was perfect for our exchange. It’s very spacious and you have plenty of room to spread out, relax and enjoy. We felt totally at home! We loved the kitchen area which was very well stocked and enjoyed the fenced backyard (for the pups) and the pool. Really comfortable stay in every way. Also close to the train station to take you into the city and it’s a very easy and comfortable ride to Penn Station. We had the pleasure of meeting them both while in the Cape and thoroughly enjoy their company. People like us? Most definitely! -
Jen and Jerry’s beautiful home was wonderful. They were so flexible with accommodating us and communication was great. And we successfully navigated our way from Newark airport to their home, and back to New York City each day using just the buses and subways. We had a fabulous exchange! -
We are just back from our exchange with Jennifer and Jerry. We left a part of ourselves in this beautiful house thanks to the friendly welcome we received. Communication was easy and friendly from the first contact. We were supposed to occupy the guest apartment but Jennifer and Jerry were away on a trip and offered us their beautiful home. Everything was done to make us feel well. Thanks to all the advices Jen left for us we enjoyed NYC area very easily. South Orange is a great town, very quiet and perfectly situated to reach Manhattan by commuter train. The house is really amazing, comfy and welcoming, very spacious and very well equipped. the surroundings are beautiful and we had the surprise of seing two deers in the garden one evening ! Jen and Jerry, thank you so much, NY was one of my dream, you made my dream come true and in a more beautiful way than expected. Thank you for the lovely presents you left for us, they are now in our house in Normandy, lovely souvenir of our friends from South Orange. Sadly we didn't met but I really hope it will be possible in the future. You are more than welcome when you want at home ! Normandy is waiting for you. Jen and Jerry's home is spectacular. It is large and spacious and the kitchen is amazing! We stayed there with my daughter who was studying at UCONN and my niece who was studying at Penn State, because it was "in the middle". We did a lot of cooking and laughing and we walked into town to a few times for dinner. Really a wonderful memory for us. Jen and Jerry were amazing hosts. Jen insisted on picking us up from the airport and they insisted we use their car to pick up my daughter at UCONN. Their generosity is unparalleled! We also spent our first evening with them having a glass of wine and just chatting about life. One of the best parts of home exchanging. We hope out paths cross again with Jen and Jerry!

Jerry and I (Jen) are both attorneys. Jerry works in a private firm handling various civil matters and I am employed as a Child Advocate. We have three older children who will travel with us on occasion. Generally, however, it will just be the two of us.
If an exchange is local we prefer to travel with our well-behaved, non-shedding, never on the furniture doodle although if the circumstances don't allow him to join us we can arrange for him to stay with family or friends.
Over the past 20 plus years we have had over 65 successful home exchanges (France, Ireland (3x), Spain, Costa Rica (2x), Arizona, West Virginia, Seattle, British Columbia (3X), Florida (4x), Martinique, Iceland, California (3x), Morocco, South Africa ... just to name a few). and are looking forward to the opportunity to arrange our next exchange soon. We have thoroughly enjoyed all of our past exchanges and are adventurous and resourceful travelers.
