Neighbourhood
Beaches, uninterupted views of the countryside yet just 15 min bike ride to all amenities you need. Short bike-ride/car ride to the small town Mörbyånga with charming restaurants, cafes and grocery store and other amenities you may need. 5 min bike ride to the beach. Miles of walking and cycle paths with no traffic just outside your doorstep. Relaxing, soothing athmosphere to revitalize yourselves yet only a short bike ride or car drive to restaurants, cozy cafes, art exibitions, bars and even concerts in the summer.
Explore restaurants and cafés in Mörbylånga (Magasin 1, Lilla BIstron, Söderbönor etc.) or in the harbour area in Färjestaden (Seasalt Kitchen, ÖLandschoklad (both restaurant and ice cream shop), Fredriks bröd (bakery)
Nearest airport
Kalmar Airport, domestic and some international flights. 5 hours south of Stockholm or 4 hours north east of Malmo/Copenhagen. A car is needed on the island but if ou fly in to Copenhagen International airport there is a direct train that will take you from the airport to Kalmar under 4 hours. Rant a car then i Kalmar.
Getting around
Mörbylånga
The Mörbylånga valley is one of Sweden's most fertile farming areas. The valley, a former sea bed, provides farmers with the natural conditions for growing cereals and other crops such as potatoes, onions and strawberries.
The market town of Mörbylånga was founded in 1820 and has a number of beautiful small streets with a late 19th and early 20th century atmosphere. The buildings between the sea and the square are wooden houses with idyllic gardens that are typical of the time. Being near the water and the harbour characterizes this market town, as do the many artists and artisans who live and work here.
Färjestaden
Färjestaden is the largest town on Öland. There are a number of restaurants and cafés and ice cream shops in the charming marina. While the sun sets over the strait you can jump off the quayside for an evening dip, with the bridge as a beautiful backdrop. Located right across from Kalmar, Färjestaden has always been the natural centre for ferries over the Kalmar Strait.
The first recorded traffic dates back to the 13th century. When the Öland bridge was completed in 1972 and the ferry service ended, the Kalmarsundsbolaget had been operating across the strait for 106 years. Today, cyclists and pedestrians can cross the strait with the Dessi ferry service during the summer months.
Vickleby
The village road leading through Vickleby has often been described as one of the most beautiful on Öland. Vickleby has a long history as a stronghold for artists, centered around Bo Pensionat and Capellagården. Here are restaurants, cafés and galleries.
Beijershamn
This is one of the most important bird locales on Öland. Here are some wonderful walking trails and a large bird watching tower that provides a view over the entire area.

The Great Alvar
is a barren limestone terrace, in the southern half of the island of Öland,
The limestone plain was created by glacial action from earlier ice age advances. The limestone formation itself was created about 500 million years ago in more southerly seas. Because of the thin soil mantle and high pH levels, a great assortment of vegetation is found including numerous rare species. Wonderful walking trails there!
KALMAR
The medieval centre of Kalmar tells the story of the city’s past as one of Sweden’s most significant centres of power. Owing to its well-preserved historic architecture, Kalmar has twice been crowned winner of Europe’s foremost architectural award – Europa Nostra.
To get a flavour of Kalmar – and quickly grasp why it’s held in such high regard among architecture aficionados – simply set off on a city stroll. The cobblestone streets of the Old Town are lined with well-preserved buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. This area is also home to the city’s crowning glory, Kalmar Castle, which started its days as a fortified tower in the 12th century before it was fashioned into a magnificent renaissance castle by King Gustav Vasa some four centuries later. Take it all in by joining a guided tour or catch an exhibition – and when it’s time to refuel, enjoy a delicious ‘fika’ at the Castle restaurant.
Kalmar is home to Europe’s biggest dinosaur exhibition – housing some 200 dinosaur skeletons.
