Praten over Schotland is praten over landschappen. Van degenen die we ons zelfs in de beste films niet konden voorstellen. Of je nu maar een dagje in de stad bent of een rondreis door dit land maakt, je komt helemaal gefascineerd en geboeid terug door de omgeving. Achter het landschap gaat de hand van de mens schuil, en vooral de constructies die de geschiedenis van dit land vormen, samen met meren en bergen. Waar je ook bent, je bent niet ver van een fort, gerestaureerd of in puin, open voor het publiek of eeuwenlang verlaten. Eilean Donan, Edinburgh, Dunnottar, Stirling of Urquhart zijn enkele van de meest bezochte kastelen, maar het zijn slechts enkele namen tussen honderden gebouwen (eens duizenden), elk met een fascinerend, kronkelig, romantisch of verontrustend verhaal erachter.
