General Overview
Our home is where our children, aged 21 and 19, were born and grew up in, and have now left! It’s full of wonderful memories and is large, cosy and welcoming. Lots of space for everyone to spread out, 4 large bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and 4 toilets, a big garden with terrace, lawn, treehouse and BBQ, a music room with guitars and my pride and joy Yamaha U3 piano, and generally a lovely space for realaxing on our own or with friends. We’re in a great location equidistant from the centre of Sheffield and the spectacular Peak District. National Park. If you’re a lover of the outdoors you will love where we live too!
The Space
The ground floor is spacious with two living rooms, each with a wood burning/multifuel stove and a large smart TV - so everyone has their space and there's no arguing over what to watch! The back living room is an open plan area with the kitchen and dining area and faces our lovely garden, which has plenty of grass to run around on, a couple of terraces for relaxing on, a fabulous tree house (we call it that although it's on stilts rather than in a tree!) and a table tennis table. At the front of the house is our music room - I spend hours in here playing piano, and Paul's guitars line the wall. Also on this floor is a toilet, and a utility room with washer, dryer and a very useful second fridge (we use it as our drinks fridge for cold beers!)
Upstairs on the first floor we have two large bedrooms, one with a king size bed and en suite shower and toilet, the other with a double bed and beautiful old (non-working) fireplace. The family bathroom with bath and shower is on this floor - as is our office space which will be locked when visitors are here as a space to store all our junk during your stay. On the second floor there are two more double bedrooms, with dormer windows on one side and velux roof windows on the other, so really bright and airy. These are our kids' rooms and although they have left home for university now, they still return often and the rooms are still very much full of their personalities. These two rooms share a shower and toilet room on that floor.
Guest Access
There are three floors and steps up to both back and front door, so unfortunately this house is not suitable for wheelchair users.

Neighbourhood
Our house is a few minutes walk to Endcliffe Park - where they have a parkrun (5km free social run every Saturday at 9am); the park is the start of a beautiful walk through woodland all the way to the edge of the Peak District (about 5km). There is so much to explore in the Peaks - lovely villages like Bakewell (try their famous Bakewell pudding), Eyam (a fascinating place and the original 'lockdown' village - in 1665 they shut themselves off and halted the spread of the Great Plague), and plenty of historical properties like Chatsworth House, and National Trust/English Heritage houses and castles. Hiking, climbing, cycling, it's all there! Looking the other way, Sheffield city centre is just 10 minutes drive, for theatres, cinemas, bars, good restaurants and Europe's largest purpose-built food hall, Cambridge Street Collective. Locally there is everything you need within walking distance - supermarket, chemist, bakers, post office etc and five minutes up the road is The Greystones, a really great community pub - kids very welcome - with its Backroom which hosts great gigs nearly every night of the week.
Getting to my home
From Manchester airport, it's an hour by car or train. From London it's 2 hours on the train, more like 3 in a car. Getting a taxi from the station will take under 10 minutes and costs around £10. There are regular buses from town that stop just down the road.
Nearest airport
Manchester Airport - it's a beautiful drive over the Pennines. I recommend coming over Winnat's Pass, simply stunning!
Getting Around
5 minutes walk to Co-op supermarket, pharmacy, cafes, pubs, post office
Wow, what a wonderful first exchange! We loved Liz & Paul's beautiful home. The house was so comfortable & homely, we felt we had known them for years! Liz & Paul's recommendations of places to eat & visit during our stay meant that we fitted right into their community. Living 'out in the sticks' ourselves, we made the most of urban life, eating out & live music, whilst driving out to explore the Peak District during the day. I would highly recommend you visit!
Liz, Paul and Grace were absolutely wonderful guests. I walked in my apartment and it was like they were never there other than beautiful floweres, some chocolate and a great book to encourage me to come to the Peak Disctrict for some hiking and that is working for sure. Hope one day we'll meet in person.
Paul & Liz were amazing guests, being very respectful of our property & left it in immaculate condition. They even bought us a lovely guest feedback book & flowers! We are looking forward to meeting online & swapping experiences (with the hope that they would welcome another swap down the line!) 😁
We had such a great stay at Ellen’s. Her apartment is so comfortable, and the location is great, in a safe and interesting neighbourhood, close to public transport and with everything we needed nearby. Ellen was easy to communicate with both before and during our stay and we so enjoyed having busy days doing the tourist thing in Manhattan combined with chilled evenings at the apartment. Thanks so much Ellen, you’re welcome to visit us in the UK anytime x
Our exchange with Jen and Billy was really successful. Excellent communication beforehand so everything went very smoothly. Their home is beautiful set in the heart of the countryside but within easy car distance of all sorts of interesting places: Powys Castle, Ludlow, Montgomery, Erddig Hall…. and Chester is less than an hour away for a more urban fix. We enjoyed cosy nights in front of a roaring stove and loved the hot tub. Thanks both for a really relaxing stay x
Jen and Billy had a busy few days in our home, visiting the Peak District (Chatsworth, Bakewell, Buxton, Hathersage) as well as enjoying what our neighbourhood has to offer locally. We returned to a spotless house which really is the best thing to come home to after an exchange and they’re welcome to come back any time.

Liz
We are Liz and Paul, in our 50s and 60s and recent empty nesters. Our kids are 21 and 19 and have embarked on their own adventures and now so can we!! We are semi retired, Liz teaches French from home and Paul runs a bicycle repair business, also from home. Our flexible work patterns allow us to take advantage of spontaneous trips away and we’re excited to be part of PLU to allow us to do that, while welcoming other members into our lovely home.
People Like Us is the world's most trusted home exchange community. We believe in sharing, trust, generosity, respect, communication, equality, cooperation, honesty, hospitality, friendship, flexibility and adventure. We take pride in our homes and we care about the environment in which we live: our village, city, country and our planet. We care about the ethos of home exchange and we do it because we love the experience and the friendships that it generates.
