Hospitality Description: Because of the rural nature and requirement to access by boat, we will remain on another part of the island in the other home while visitors are here. There are 4 acres and plenty of privacy.

General Overview
Please Note - We are building our summer 2026 schedule for our business, so we may have no dates posted. If you have questions, please message us. We may be able to do a swap.
We own a private 4-acre island 3 miles from the center of town in Sitka, Alaska. We have a 1000 sq ft cabin right on the water of a small cove for guests. The cabin is only available in May & September. 1 queen bedroom, 1 double bedroom, and an open loft with a double and four twins. It has one bathroom. The island is off-grid with solar and generator power and a catchment water filtration system. This is not evident while staying in the home, as all the electricity and water work as in a normal home. However, you may need to be conservative with electricity and water use in warm weather. The heating is wood only. If you struggle to start and maintain a fire in a woodstove, this may not be the right place for you in early spring or late summer. We are happy to help and show you, but we can't be there all night. The kitchen is complete with a 6-burner gas stove, a smaller propane (RV Size) refrigerator, a large sink, but no dishwasher or washing machine. We do have the ability to take laundry to be washed at our home in town in an emergency.
We have Starlink for the internet and cellular service on the island. We also have paddleboards and kayaks for you to use in the cove. We often see whales in front of the house that overlooks the Sitka Sound.
We own a tourism company and run it in the summer from the island. You can add some of our wildlife tours at a discount off our normal price while you're here if you want to go whale watching or sightseeing.
You will need transportation to and from town while staying here and we can provide that within our availability. Please note though we have very busy days and you will be at the mercy of our schedule sometimes, which is generally 730-845 am leaving the island and 4-630 pm return.
We will be staying on the island in the main home while guests visit to serve as caretakers and ensure all the systems are operating properly.
There is no TV. This is a relaxing, beautiful place, but if you're looking for more action or less logistics, please check into our other listed home, so you can stay in town.
The house is not ideal for young children; there are hazards, and the home is right on the water.
We do ask for. a $150 cleaning fee to cover bringing someone out to the island to clean after your stay.
The Space
Mertz Island is a private 4-acre island located 3 miles offshore in Sitka, Alaska. The guest home is 1,000 sq ft and features two bedrooms, one with a large double bed and one with a standard double bed, as well as a large loft accessible by a ladder that accommodates four twin beds and a double bed. There is a living room, a full kitchen, and one bathroom. Access is only by boat and we will stay at the main home on the island when we have visitors to help them and transport them back and forth.
Guest Access
One floor and a loft. Only accessible by a boat ramp which has a steep incline at low tide. Must be able to board a boat to get to and from the island.
Notes
We own a travel agency and a Wildlife tour company that provides both land and whale watching tours on our boat. If you have logistical questions about getting to Sitka or planning your trip, we are happy to answer them. We can also offer advice on the best times to come since activities here are seasonal, and you may get a very different experience depending on which month you visit.

Neighbourhood
Sitka is a very popular part of Alaska. Located on the route of several cruise lines in the summer and a popular location for charter fishing, the summers are beautiful, and the days are long. Located in SE Alaska on the outside coast of the inside passage, it is rich in Native history as well as Russian history.
A beautiful place for outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, wildlife viewing, boating, and fishing.
Getting to my home
Sitka has daily flights from Anchorage Alaska (ANC), Juneau Alaska (JNU) or Seattle Washington (SEA) via Alaska Airlines.
To access Mertz Island, you must board a boat in town for the 15-minute crossing to the island.
Nearest airport
SIT located in Sitka is 5 min from the boat dock.
Getting Around
We are happy to transport people back and forth but please check with us about our schedule ahead of time and carefully read the description. We generally work 5-6 days a week and go into work in town. We are happy to take you but would be spending the entire day in town before being able to bring you back to the island. Water Taxis exist but are very expensive and not practical. Many people choose to stay back on the island for some of the days they are here to enjoy hiking the trails, paddling in the cove and enjoying the view. We will help you arrange grocery pick up and will generally be able to pick you up at the airport on arrival, depending on our schedule.
Sitka is very walkable and cars and bikes are available to rent for a day or longer in town, should you want to explore.
