General Overview
Our humble home is a 3 bedroom mid-terrace house (neighbours adjoining either side) in a residential area of the historic harbour town of Whitehaven.
*just moved in September 2024, photos will be updated as we re-furnish*
Using our home as a base, you can explore the less-travelled Western part of the Lake District National Park; a unique blend of beautiful lakes and mountains, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. (Car is necessary)
Swim in England's deepest lake (Wastwater) hike the highest mountain (Scafell Pike) and explore the last working slate mine at Honister.
This is the ultimate playground for outdoor enthusiasts; hiking, biking, climbing, kayaking, wild swimming... and for the less mobile, and young kids, I have lots of recommendations on how to experience the Lakes, the farms and the picturesque towns and villages.
Whitehaven is located on a remote coastline with the close-by seaside hotspots of St.Bees, where the official coast to coast trail begins, & Seascale, both famous for their locally made ice-creams.
If history is your thing; walk Whitehaven's historic harbour, home to the only US invasion of the UK in 1777 led by John Paul Jones, or learn about what inspired famous writers such as William Wordsworth & Beatrix Potter. An hour drive to the Scottish border, you can discover more of the UKs Roman history at Hadrian's wall or explore Muncaster and Lowther castle. Finish your visit by riding one of the historic steam trains in the countryside.
Due to the increase in popularity of foraged food, Cumbria has seen a boom in michelin guide and star restaurants amongst its small towns and villages, L'enclume is ranked top 3 in the world and is reachable by car 1.5hours. For a more relaxed experience, I can also recommend the best local pubs/restaurants and real ale (beer) made using water from the lakes.
If you are still excited, get in touch and I can share our local guide full of ideas and suggestions to make sure your Cumbrian stay is one to remember!
The Space
Our home is small and simple, with everything you need for your stay.
Our living room has 2 sofas, TV with streaming services, and plenty of toys for young children. The kitchen is equipped with direct access to the garden. There is also a downstairs toilet beside the kitchen where the washing machine/dryer is also located.
Upstairs, the main bedroom has a king-size electric bed (made of two individual mattresses), whilst the second bedroom has a double bed. Our third bedroom has a single bed and is set up as a child's room with toys. The upstairs bathroom has a walk-in shower, no bathtub.
We have 2 off-street parking spaces in a residential area.
Guest Access
Guests will have full access of the home with keys found in a lockbox.
Be aware that steep stairs with no handrails are used to access the front door.
There is step-free access via the backdoor into the kitchen.
There are two floors (including ground floor) with steep stairs to access the upper floor.
Notes
Cumbria is a remote county of England on the Scottish border, you should expect rain even in summer! We have suggestions for those rainy days, but locals say "there is no bad weather only bad preparation", so we can help with an ideal packing list for the Lake District in all weathers.
Our home is best used as a base to explore all the locations I have shared by car. Expect to drive between 15 minutes - 1.5 hours to reach the different tourist hotspots.
Being a remote location, in the national park the roads can be narrow (single car only with designated passing places) and winding. You may encounter cyclists, farmers, and animals sharing the roads with you.

Neighbourhood
Due to it's remote location, Whitehaven does not have much tourism and is a traditional working-class town with all the amenities you may need, supermarkets, restaurants, parks and a hospital.
Surrounded by water you can choose to visit the coast or within 15 minutes drive you can enter the breath-taking Lake District National Park; it's easy to escape everyday life and be immersed in nature.
Farmer shows occur throughout the summer, open to the public to see all the best in class livestock and local arts, crafts & baked treats.
Cumbria is also host to many weird and wonderful challenges & competitions; Wainwright walks, Fred Whitton cycling, Coast to Coast walk/cycle, Buttermere Bash paragliding, world gurning, worlds biggest liar, just to name a few...
Being born here, I have poured all my local knowledge into our guide, if you have any questions I will be sure to answer them.
Getting to my home
The best way to arrive here is by car since this is a remote area of England.
Whitehaven railway station is a 10 minute walk and connected by the coastal line between Barrow and Carlisle.
Nearest airport
All below airports are 2.5 hours drive to our home:
Newcastle
Manchester
Liverpool
Glasgow
All these airports can be accessed by train/bus combinations however these are much slower than driving.
Getting Around
I highly recommend guests have a car to make the most of visiting the Lake District and the neighboring towns.
The main town and amenities are walking distance.
Train and bus options available.
