Nestled in a grove of trees off a main road in rural Hokkaido, our little cabin-like oasis is a refreshing break from the hustle and bustle. Located 10-20 minutes from any shops or towns, it is the perfect place to unplug and enjoy your family, focus on work from home or just relax with good food cooked at home!
This stay would be suitable for someone with experience in nature, rural environments, preference to those with Japanese language, Japan experience or extensive travel to countries in which you don't speak the language.
The space
Our home is an open concept house with a mix of U.S. American country style and Japanese nostalgia. A 30 year old house recently renovated. There are several stairs, steps and ladders. It makes for a whimsical stay with several niches to work from home, but also a caution to those with limited mobility.
The shower/tub features a Japanese style bathing experience mimicking an onsen with a big window that opens to let in a cool breeze while bathing. My favorite place to relax after a long day.
Two toilets (seperate from the shower)
Sleeping arrangements:
One true bedroom with a fully closing door.
A loft with plenty of space to lay out floor futons (for those agile enough to climb the ladders).
A japanese tatami room that links to the kitchen. It can be semi closed off with roll curtains that give a bit of privacy.
All sleeping arrangements are traditional Japanese style with floor futons or mattresses which can be folded up to store out of the way.
Heating/cooling: A wood fireplace and heated floors on the main area are the prime source of heat. Windows can be opened for cooling.
Guest access
This home is a two story plus loft house. There are several stairs, steps, ladders, and levels. This house is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible. Caution is given to anyone with limited mobility.
Notes
Our location has no telephone landline.
We have no tv line, but we do have a projector to watch streaming services.
We are rural location. A Japanese or international driver's license is necessary.
This is a rural location, nestled in a grove of trees, so bugs and critters exist. Including Japanese killer hornets suzumebachi are most active in Spring/Summer. Generally if you don't bother them, they won't bother you. If you have a known allergy to bees/wasps an epi pen would be recommended in the unlikely event of a sting.

Neighbourhood
We reside in a small village nestled in farmland between the mountains and the sea with a population of 139 within the township of Toubetsu. The main town center of Toubetsu is a 15-20 minute drive to quaint shops, doctor's offices, local eateries, shrines and more.
Several times a year various small events and festivals are held in town.
15 minutes in the other direction is access to various sleepy towns with charming corner shops, camping grounds/parks and onsen.
Like many places, Japan is especially a country of respect. Sharing our house also means sharing our community. We hope that you will find the charm in this rural location and approach the local farmers and community members with an open mind and respect.
There will be no or limited English available in this town/nearby. Google translate goes a long way.
Nearest airport
We are located about 1 -1.5 hours drive by car from New Chitose Airport. Rental car would be suggested.
Getting around
Our home is located off a main road in a countryside area in rural Japan surrounded by farmland. It is the perfect place for birdwatchers as we have many varieties of birds depending on the season. If you want to escape the bustle of daily life, this is a perfect place to relax. As it is located off a main road, it could also be used as a base location for day trips by car to other destinations. Use of a car is mandatory at this location, so please be aware of this.
(It is located off a heavily trafficked road, so sounds of cars/trucks can be heard after snowmelt)
We are located at least 1 hour from any city, but have quiet local shops for necessities within a 20 minute drive.
Approximate drive time to nearby destinations.

2 hrs to Asahikawa
3 hrs to Niseko

We are a family of three, with a baby. I am a U.S. American married to a Japanese Hokkaido born husband with our new baby. I'm new to the house exchange community and excited to get travelling again. I have had several experiences with couchsurfing, warm showers, workaways and exchanges back in my 20's, and excited to enter the leveled up version with house exchanging!
People Like Us is the world's most trusted home exchange community. We believe in sharing, trust, generosity, respect, communication, equality, cooperation, honesty, hospitality, friendship, flexibility and adventure. We take pride in our homes and we care about the environment in which we live: our village, city, country and our planet. We care about the ethos of home exchange and we do it because we love the experience and the friendships that it generates.
