Our family scored our dream 1916 home just blocks from Lake Washington, public transit and many beautiful Seattle parks. Bonus - we were able to custom build a guest apartment downstairs. While it is in frequent use by Airbnb guests, having this apartment available will allow us to host non-simultaneous home exchanges in 2020 and 2021 during the should season. Unfortunately we have already planned our 2019 vacations.
This private 750-square-foot guest apartment (mother in law unit) is complete with living room, full kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and access to the covered porch overlooking the garden. This is a spacious 1 bedroom unit with separate areas to sleep up to 5 - great for families, friends, or 2 couples. We live right upstairs with our two children, but your entrance is completely separate from our home.
You'll enter on the left side of the house by the garage and large tulip tree. The stairs lead down to a private daylight basement apartment. You'll have space to hang coats and remove shoes, and a cozy sitting area with a trundle day bed that can be used for two twins or a king size bed. A convertible sofa in this room can also be extended to sleep one adult or two children.
Enjoy your breakfast and prepare your meals in the full kitchen, complete with a dishwasher and a cozy dining nook. Through the hallway you will pass a full bath and enter the living room. In the living room, enjoy movie night with the large internet TV (Netflix, Hulu) or catch up on work at the laptop table provided. The game shelf is stocked with board games and Seattle guidebooks.
Finally, relax in your sunny bedroom overlooking the garden. Here you'll find a queen bed, dresser, dimmable lights, TV and large, bright windows facing the back yard. (Back yard is reserved for family use only). Enjoy a cup of coffee or glass of wine on the covered porch overlooking the garden. Our neighborhood is just a short walk down the street to Mt. Baker Beach.
Taking a longer trip to Washington? Consider a couple of days on the coast at our beach place, Surf Retreat Westport, or our Mt. Rainier cabin, Running Deer Chalet.
You must be able to walk down a flight of stairs to the apartment. We will program the door code for you and you'll have 24/7 keyless access. You can also use our small driveway in front of our house for off-street parking if you'd like.
Because this is also a vacation rental, we ask guests to pay our cleaners $70 directly upon check out to ensure you can have a relaxing departure and our cleaners can exchange the linens from the commercial laundry. If we end up doing a simultaneous exchange we can absolutely discuss this and are willing to pay your cleaners, too, to ensure everyone is happy with the cleaning.

This home is in a great location in the Mt. Baker neighborhood. It's 3.5 blocks from Lake Washington and Mt. Baker Beach (a sandy beach swimming area with a lifeguard and fishing pier in the summer), a 15 minute walk from the Mt. Baker Light Rail Station, and you can be at Pike Place Market in half an hour by hopping on the downtown bus that passes right in front of the house - the stop is just a block away.
We hope you'll love our neighborhood as much as we do!
Our home sits at the top of Dose Terrace in the Mt. Baker neighborhood, the first planned neighborhood in Seattle. The historic Charles P. Dose House is across the street. With beautiful Olmstead Brothers parks, views of Mt. Rainier and Lake Washington, it's very easy to fall in love with Seattle from this vantage point. In fact, one of the brick pillars from the original guard house gates sits on the corner of our property.
The historic homes are beautiful, and the Mt. Baker Community Club offers classes and fun programs to the public. Check them out for yoga, pilates or Zumba just a 10 minute walk away.
If you're driving, you'll find easy, free street parking in front of the house, or you are welcome to park in our small driveway. Downtown is just a 15 minute drive, and Bellevue is about 20 minutes away.
