General overview

Enjoy Hawaii in a cozy two bedroom suite in the heart of Pahoa Village on the Big island. Natural setting that feels remote and rural but a short 5 min walk to restaurants and shops including a natural food store, Tin Shack Bakery Cafe, kava bar, boutique clothing shops, and more. Off the beaten path, but less than an hour from volcano national park and Mauna Kea. Thirty minutes to Hilo with lots of ocean access and activities for families and adventurers. Ten minutes to Coast at Uncle Roberts.

The space

This freshly renovated suite has a convenient parking area and a private entrance under our "baby head" avocado tree. The two bedrooms both have queen beds. The bathroom has an artsy corrugated tin metal shower with tile floor and a adorable tiny handwashing sink. The star of this space is the breezy, bright large screened in lanai including a generous "shoshugi" burned finish dining “picnic” table and living area. The couch there can fold down to a full size bed if you so desire. There is also a connected outdoor concrete pad with picnic table to enjoy the outdoors! Our kitchenette is surprisingly well equipped with a electric wok, Induction cooktop and pots, toaster oven, microwave, full size refrigerator and freezer and a variety of small kitchen appliances like a ninja blender and an immersion blender, small coffee machine and coffee grinder. If you have kids, we can share toys and games. We live above, so if we are hosting you no simultaneous and we are home, you will hear some family sounds above you at waking hours, similar to a hotel room. Our toddler walks loudly 😄. You may see us in the yard outside your windows or hear our doggies from time to time. Happy to say hello but you will have plenty of privacy as well! There is a top bar beehive in your side yard with lovely gentle bees and if you're interested and I'm doing beekeeping while you're here I'm happy to let you join me. At night the coqui frogs will sing to to sleep, and in the morning, neighborhood chickens will welcome the sun! Our neighborhood has recently been blessed with a peacock so keep your eyes open and you might see it! The kitchen, dining room and bedrooms are about 30” below ground level in a daylight basement. Every room has windows with a breeze, lots of light and greenery outside! The larger screened in entry/living/dining area is at ground level with big views and is a great place to spend time! We do not offer A/C but can provide fans and honestly this downstairs tends to stay cool for the tropics. We do our best to keep all areas clean and pest free. However just a notice to more sensitive guests: The outdoor screened lanai should be considered an "outdoor area" and it is more subject to weather and the ups and downs of jungle life including occasional critters.

Guest access

There is a short staircase, about five wide steps when you enter the screened in lanai. There is a washer and dryer accessible in the main house carport area that you may use. Shared back yard and your own picnic table area on concrete.

Notes

Regarding tropical Hawaii: We have renovated this old plantation Hale in the jungle and aim to keep it airy, clean and healthy. We clean and treat regularly for our jungle neighbors who want to come inside: geckos, frogs, sugar ants, fruit flies, and roaches… We also need your help, which means it’s very important to wash dishes after use, wipe counters clean and keep food stored properly in the fridge to not tempt them! Being in rural Hawaii, you may see a few critters who sneak in through doors or hidden cracks so please keep doors closed. The tropics means a lot of life!

Noelle

Aloha! We are a homeschooling family of 8 from Hawaii! We have house-swapped before as well as hosted dozens of couch surfers and foreign volunteers through other platforms! We love sharing the world with and learning alongside our children! We have run an organic Bakery Cafe the past ten years and have a passion for all things holistic health! Matt grew up in the Philippines until highschool in Huntington Beach California but felt at home moving to the Big island 18 years ago. He is an inspiring Artist, martial artist, amazing father, philosopher and preacher! Noelle was born and raised on the Garden Island of Kauai, went to university in Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz, lived in Italy and new Zealand and traveled as often as she could before meeting Matt on Big Island 17 years ago! She loves playing guitar, singing, writing music, cooking and baking, all things holistic and natural and raising little humans to blossom in the world as lights! We value respectful treatment of others property and will take care of your place well!
