Our areaAloha from the Purvis Ohana! Come experience the Hawaiian tropical rain forest on Hawaii Island!
Our home has a large covered lanai (patio) overlooking the beautiful tropical jungle with fantastic tradewind breeze. We have two aerial silk hammocks and a lounging daybed and table and chairs for hanging out and enjoying the view and breeze. Our home has big windows in the living room and kitchen with green coconut palm tree views. Our home bsckd up to undeveloped land area so there is nature as far as you can see from the back yard which is very rare for being right in old downtown Pahoa village. Our home is located on 1/2 acre at 400 ft elevation so it will be cooler than sea level during the summer and with all the air conditioning is not necessary. Just open all the windows and turn on the fans. The temperature is usually a pleasant 75 F (24 C) and it cools down somewhat at night. Our home was an old plantations home and custom rennovated by us and a team of friends! Modern farmhouse moving towards minimalist style. We lovingly pieced together old and new elements utilizing creativity and resourcefulness in it's design, including an original to the property native 'ohia tree poleholding up the front entryway roof structure. Ohia are a native hardwood- the first trees to grow on new lava fields. We have many native plant species on our property such as Kalo (taro- used to make poi traditionally), 2 varieties of Olena (tumeric), kukui tree (candlenut tree) that the Hawaiians use the nut to make traditional lei, mamaki tea tree that the Hawaiians use for all around herbal health tonic, Ti leaf plant (not to be confused with tea) used for wrapping food to cook in imu's (underground) and for fever reducing, and several varieties of ferns such as 'uluhe fern and warabi (a local edible fern) and other food forest plantings that thrive. We also grow papayas, bananas, avocado, coconuts, jackfruit, grapefruit and many tropical edible greens.
The space
Our home has three bedrooms, a nursery and two bathrooms. The master bedroom has two large windows with jungle view and fantastic breeze at night, a King mattress with memory foam topper and Organic linen sheets. There is almost a glider rocker nook. There is a bathroom with an infrared sauna, shower with bathtub and toilet, sink right next to both the masterbedroom and another bathroom off the Lanai with cast iron soaking tub, toilet, sink and open air high window to the nature views off the Lanai. The next bedroom has a custom built tripple bunk bed, Ariel silk hammock and tall window with a window fan to create cool cross breeze of fresh air. The Third bedroom is an interior office space turned bedroom with two comfortable twin beds. No windows here, but fans and a hepa filter. Our daughters 2 parakeets live in this room. In the nursery, We have a toddler bed with railings and some toy storage. We also have an additional portable crib if you need it.
There is a play space room in between three of the bedrooms and bathrooms with a wall shelf of games and grates with toys, a book shelf and the front load washer and dryer. If you have kids we have plenty of books and toys, Legos and large magnetic fort building tiles. Connected to this is the 8 foot dining nook and living room with large windows open to the kitchen on one side and the Lanai on the other. Lots of bright in this space.
Our kitchen is equipped with a flat top electric stove and oven, toaster oven, full size refrigerator and freezer and a variety of small kitchen appliances like a Vitamix blender, food processor, on demand ice cream machine (with a compressor so you can try your hand at turning out back to back batches of tropical flavored ice creams without needing to freeze any chambers), rice cooker / automatic pressure cooker, champion juicer and more. We love to cook and bake and spend a lot of time making food from scratch at home! The kitchen is recently renovated to a large one level island with bar stools on one end and floor to ceiling shelving with tote storage..I'll post pictures as soon as it's done. The kitchen leads to the front entryway where we grow herbs and greens on our indoor NASA tech tower garden. The front entryway had two doors. Ours and one guest suite we rent out on Airbnb. You may see guests coming and going during your stay in our main home.
Guest access
Our home is a single story home. There are seven steps to enter the main part of the house.
You will have access to the all the rooms in our main home, and we will try to make space for your clothing in our cubbies and closets 😊 The main house living quarters are About 1600 sq ft.
Notes
We have a lot of flexibility with travel schedule as we run our own business and homeschool. We try to plan around good flight prices (7 tickets add up!) And visiting areas near family.
We have , two parakeets, one indoor/outdoor cat (hypo- allergenic Siamese type) and two dogs that live in the back fenced yard. We would most likely be hosting one to two volunteers in our downstairs studio while your here who would be responsible for taking care of the animals (the birds are very tame and you could keep them if you want during your stay). The dogs live outside our home exclusively so there is no dog hair inside the house. My husband is allergic to cats but is not allergic to this cat which is why we allow him to go in and out, but the cat could be outdoors during your stay.
Thought we are new to People Like Us platform we have done much traveling as a family sharing space with other people in a very respectful way, our children are used to travel, hospitality and have been taught to value other people's belongings as well as take care of their own. 2 years ago we had a fantastic experience with a three week home and car exchange with another family. We look forward to doing so again!

Neighbourhood
We live right around the corner from a really sweet natural health food store and our village an excellent Thai food place, a steakhouse/local fusion food with live music on the weekends, a pizza place, a fish and chips place and some other specialty boutique shops.
Here is an article talking about what it's like to live in Pahoa village: https://thishawaiilife.com/pahoa-town/
Our home is very close to a lot of off the beaten path sites. The site where the lava flowed in 2018 where you can walk up to see the fissure and look into it where it came out is 5 minutes from our house and then there's a lava Museum right in our town that was relocated from the volcano National Park. There is a free outdoor Olympic size public swimming pool a short walk away and playground/indoor basketball ball courts next to the pool. Shipman beach hike along the shaded jungle coast to a beach with turtles. Lava tree nature Walk park Is Just 5 Min from us. Hike to the new beach formed in 2018 at four corners. Drive the old tree tunnel jungle road in WaWa and check out the tidepools. Get lost in the beauty of the drive from kalapana to Pohoiki hot ponds along the coast and stop for local vegan gelato at Kalani along the way. We are 50 minutes from hiking in volcano National Park and there's a few nice hikes nearby us as well as geothermally heated hot ponds that are 20 minutes away at pohoiki (issac hale beach park). Kahena black sand beach is also 20 minutes away (clothing optional, FYI).. Sat morning Kalapana farmers market 10 min. Away as well as Kalapana Night market on Wednesdays with live local Hawaiian music and food/craft/dinner vendor. Makuu Sunday farmers market 5 Min away.
Hilo is the Big town near us, thirty minutes away. In some sense, Pahoa and lower puna is a neighborhood of Hilo, meaning that Hilo is a larger hub for extra curricular activities like sports, cheaper grocery shopping, more shopping in general, greater diversity of restaurants and such. For example, our homeschool co-op meets in Hilo and we are part of a jiu jitsu academy and dance academy in Hilo.
There are many family friendly beaches in Hilo. Some of our favorites are Onekahakaha Beach and Carlsmith Beach where you almost always see sea turtles. For those who surf Honoli'i is a popular surfing beach as well as Richardson's Beach. Paddle boardingnis fun on the river at honolii and Hilo Bay. Hilo has two gorgeous parks along the bay: Wailoa River State Park and Liliuokalani Garden which connects to Coconut Island (Mokuola - the Hawaiian name). Such large park areas along the shoreline are rare in Hawaii due to the pressure to develop land near the ocean but the parkland is a result of two large tsunamis which destroyed Hilo during the last century. Redevelopment was banned along the bayfront afterwards and the beautiful parks were formed instead, including coconut island.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the most popular destination on Hawaii Island (The Big Island). Kilauea Volcano can be viewed at the national park which is a 50 min drive (32 miles) from our home. There is plenty of recent volcanic activity to see in the national park.
Further away, the Island offer many unique sites! Southpoint, green sands beach, 2 step snorkeling, whale watching boats, night dive manta ray boats! Waimea poniolo (cowboy) country is 1.5 hours, Kona (Costco) beaches 2 hours away. Mauna kea star gazing and sunrise!
Getting to my home
You will need a car for your stay on the big island.
We are open to doing a car swap. We have an eight-seater.
There is a bus that is free that goes from a few places in Hilo to Pahoa and comes within a few minutes from our house but it does not go directly from the airport to Pahoa Village. You can get Ubers in Hilo but they're on the expensive side.
Nearest airport
Our home in Pahoa Village is 30 minutes from the Hilo airport or 2 hours from the Kona airport.
Kona is almost always where we fly out from when going to the mainland because it's so much cheaper and many direct flights. unless we're using miles and it's the same from Hilo. Or you can fly to Honolulu and catch a short flight on Southwest airlines or Hawaiian airlines over to Hilo. Island hopping is easy.
