General overview
Hospitality: You get a basement suite with a private bedroom, private bathroom, living area with couch and TV, and separate entrance in a beautiful, new-construction home with a porch, back deck, great back yard, and friendly neighbors. (We're working on improving the decor before the spring and will update with pics when ready.)
We're across the street from an urban farm that hosts weekly picnic/music events during the summer. Yet we're only half a block to downtown Silver Spring and the Metro (red line, 20 min ride to Union Station and downtown Washington DC). 3 min walk to Whole Foods.
Two different parks/playgrounds within 5 min walk. And in the middle of the largest Ethiopian community in the DC area which means fantastic Ethiopian food (among other great food options.)
Did I mention the El Salvadoran taco/pupusa truck at the gas station on the corner?
We have two cars (Honda Odyssey minivan and Honda Fit) so it's possible depending on circumstances that we may be able to provide you with use of one of them. Or at least give you some rides if needed. But we're also half a block away from all the shopping, restaurants, and cafes of downtown Silver Spring and the Silver Spring Metro station (which is also a central bus depot.)
There's no kitchen in the basement, but we're planning to add an electric kettle, a microwave and some dishware. You're also welcome to come upstairs any time and use the main level kitchen as well as the front porch and back deck and yard.
The space
Your own private suite in the basement. Accessible by walking upstairs through the "secret" door. And also a door that leads directly out to the side of the house.
*Queen-sized bed in the bedroom.
*Couch that can be converted into queen-sized bed in the living area.
*Can sleep 4 comfortably (if you share bed space.)
*Bathroom with shower.
Guest access
There's a side entrance to the basement suite. It's about 5 or 6 steps down.
And a longer stairway up to the main floor where the kitchen is.

Neighbourhood
Very walkable suburban neighborhood, but right on the edge of downtown Silver Spring with access to lots of shopping and places to eat.
Across the street from the Koiner Farm, an urban farm that regularly hosts family-friendly events in its beautiful space and sells its good throughout the week.
Plenty of great Ethiopian and El Salvadoran food in the area as Silver Spring is home to very large immigrant communities from those two countries.
Also, amazing Jamaican takeaway from Negril up the street; Detroit style pizza from Underground Pizza around the corner; A comic book store on our corner; a French crepe restaurant right next to that; and the best burger ever (and live bands) at the Quarry Tavern.
There's also an indoor mall and plaza with lots of familiar chain stores within a 5 min walk, and a farmer's market on Saturday mornings.
Getting to my home
Airports:
DCA Reagan National is closest (35 min drive)
Baltimore-Washington International (BWI) (50 min drive)
Dulles International (IAD) in Virginia (1 hr drive)
The DC Metro subway line runs to Reagan and Dulles. And from BWI you can take a train to Union Station and then the Metro (redline) to Silver Spring.
Metro is a 10 min walk to our house.
Taxis/Uber also work fine.

Stephen
Family of 5 (2 girls 14 & 10, 1 boy 7). Have never done a home exchange before. My wife and I love traveling and have lived abroad pre-kids. Our kids are a little reluctant about new countries but we're slowly breaking them in. I'm a legal English professor at a US law school and teach students from all over the world. My wife is a long-time primary school educator. Did I mention I love playing ultimate frisbee?
People Like Us is the world's most trusted home exchange community. We believe in sharing, trust, generosity, respect, communication, equality, cooperation, honesty, hospitality, friendship, flexibility and adventure. We take pride in our homes and we care about the environment in which we live: our village, city, country and our planet. We care about the ethos of home exchange and we do it because we love the experience and the friendships that it generates.
