We are a semi-retired couple looking to do a lot more traveling! We have a beautiful home in the wine country of Sonoma County. It's a nice place to relax, enjoy the pool and deck, or visit wineries, hike, cycle, taste craft beers and see live theater.

General overview

We have a large home in a quiet neighborhood. In the middle of the Sonoma County wine country, the scenery is lovely and wine tasting is amazing. Cycling is very popular here, as is hiking, theater, restaurants, live music, farmers' markets, craft beers and ciders. We are one hour from San Francisco, 45 minutes from the Pacific Ocean and four hours from Lake Tahoe. Just relaxing on the deck or by the pool is great, too.

The space

Our home is a custom, 2600 square foot single level home in a quiet street on the east side of Santa Rosa. There are hardwood floors throughout except for the bedrooms which are carpeted. It was built in 2005 on a half acre lot. There are four bedrooms and two and a half baths although two of the bedrooms have been converted into offices. We have a blow up queen mattress that is available to use in one of the offices or on the deck, if desired. We also have a double size futon out on the back deck if you would like to try sleeping outside. We sleep there five months of the year! It's fabulous! With the blow up mattress and outside futon, you can sleep 8. We have a large deck with several shade umbrellas that you can put up as needed. The south side of the yard is an extensive garden, a favorite past time of my husband. Depending on the time of year, you may pick tomatoes, cucumbers, any number of hot peppers, beets, onions, artichokes, broccoli, lemons, apples, plums and apricots. On our deck we have wine barrels full of a variety of herbs. It's so nice to go grab what you want to cook each day! Our pool is not heated, but in the summer, it is very refreshing. The hot tub takes about 30 minutes to heat up. The fence around the pool deters people from wandering into the pool area, but it is not actually child proof. If you have young children, please have an adult present at all times. Our home is solar powered (no battery yet), and we have a large compost bin in the back. We have WiFi. On the north side of the lot is a small Accessary Dwelling Unit that a family member currently lives in.

Guest access

There are a few steps to get into the house, but once inside, it is single level. The primary deck in the back is actually three levels, one even with the main house, one a step up where there is a picnic table and BBQ, and one a step down. To get to the pool, there are 10 steps. There is ample parking in the driveway.

Notes

We are very much into Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Lack of water has been an issue due to the drought in prior years. The last two winters were a blessing, but our habits are to conserve water, turn off lights, compost food waste and recycle everything possible. It's actually pretty easy once you get in the habit.

Neighbourhood

We are five minutes from Spring Lake and Annadel State Park. Great hiking right in the neighborhood. You can rent kayaks, canoes and stand up paddle boards at Spring Lake. It's lovely. There are many great trails throughout Sonoma County. Cycling is very popular, as is golf. Sonoma County is full of wineries and craft breweries, great restaurants of all types, and during the summer, there are festivals, outside markets, music, food and local art almost every day somewhere in the County. Santa Rosa has a free market in the plaza every Wednesday evening during the summer. There are a number of local live theaters and world class music halls. The Pacific Ocean is 45 minutes to the west. The beaches are beautiful, though the water is cold and from time to time, sneaker waves can surprise you and knock you over. Be aware. It's not really the best for surfing due to the rocks offshore, but Santa Cruz is fine for surfing and is 2 hours south. San Francisco is only one hour south of Santa Rosa. You can enjoy professional baseball (the Giants) and professional basketball (the Warriors) by driving or taking the ferry. San Francisco is not to be missed if you have never been there. The San Francisco 49ers are, alas, not actually in SF - they are about two hours south of Santa Rosa in Santa Clara.

Getting to my home

Santa Rosa does have a bus system. There is a stop at the end of our street. It will be easier, however, to have a car for getting around. Google maps works well. Uber and Lyft are easily accessed.

Nearest airport

The closest major airport is SFO in San Francisco, We have a local airport, STS in Santa Rosa, that is very convenient because it avoids the time and traffic of going to SFO.

Getting around

Your personal car is the easiest way to get around. Uber and Lyft are available. There is a bus that will get you downtown Santa Rosa easily. There are two grocery stores in walking distance from the home, a major chain, Safeway, and a locally owned and awesome store, Oliver's. We have a couple of bicycles you are welcome to use. You may need to check the tires - we don't use them a lot.
