Neighbourhood

Sangatte is a village that runs along the beach, you will reach it by crossing a small dune. It is 5 minutes walk from the house, by a pedestrian way. You won't find any shops there. If you want to be able to enjoy an ice cream (probably the cheapest in France), a packet of delicious fries or even a drink, you have to get closer to Calais, by car it's 5 minutes away, by bike in 10 nm you are there. You can also enjoy beautiful walks at Cap Blanc Nez, which is part of the regional natural park of caps and opal marshes. There are very cute little villages to visit: Wissant, Audresselles, Wimereux... You can also go on memorial tourism with the war museums and military cemeteries. The city of fashion and lace presents the history of lace in Calais but also magnificent temporary exhibitions! Finally, in Calais, you can enjoy the Museum of Fine Arts, which also offers great exhibitions (the latest was a retrospective on Serge and Jane). A 5-minute walk from the house, via the pedestrian path, is the sailing club: you can take the opportunity to have your children do a sailing course, or yourself ;-) or simply rent a windsurf board , a dinghy, catamaran, canoe or paddle. By car, you are less than 10 minutes from the center of Calais, a good quarter of an hour by bike and a little more by bus. The Calais Nord district is very lively during the day and in the evening: it is the area of bars and restaurants, but also of some nice shops. The town centre, a few minutes from Calais Nord, brings together most of the shops and a small shopping center which notably houses a language school, with weekly courses during the holidays or half-days on very specific themes. (Harry Potter...), in short, it's the ideal place to introduce you to Dutch, English or Mandarin ;-) And that from 4 years old! From the house, take the opportunity to go for a day to Dover (the castle can be visited) or Canterbury (shopping destination) by taking the ferry. You can also go back and forth during the day to Lille (1h drive), on the Belgian coast (45 mins) or to Bruges (1h15). These are really 3 excursions that are worth it. If the weather isn't great, head to Nausicaa, the national sea center, you'll love it and the kids even more! Finally, know that Calais has a very nice gastronomic offer: the Aquar'aile and its magnificent view of the sea and England, Ancient History, Sole Meunière and many others that will delight you at very affordable prices! And there are a lot of excellent and cheap breweries! Don't forget to taste a welsh at the hovercraft! Finally, take advantage of your stay to taste some locally produced beers! They seem to be good... said Vincent!

Getting around

There is a "carrefour" convenience store two minutes away by car (5 minutes by bike)

Helene

ENGLISH BELOW We are a couple, Hélène and Vincent, and have two children: Paul, 7, and Alice, 5. Vincent is an assistant principal in a high school and I am the manager of a shopping center in the city center. We love many things: the sea, the beach, sailing, diving, museums, reading, walking, cycling, beautiful monuments, good restaurants, big cities, small towns, getting lost while walking ... Before the birth of the children, we traveled a lot: California, New York, Niagara Falls, Dominican Republic, Thailand, Spain, Sweden, Italy, Netherlands, Lisbon and a lot of times Egypt, we love to go there winter to warm up and dive ;-) . But from 2021 we will try to go to the mountains so that the children learn to ski... We also went to Cairo and Sudan. Living just opposite England, we go to London several times a year and we love going to Paris (but not enough for our taste!) Since the children were born, we slowed down a bit but this year we decided to get back to it. We want to share with them our love of travel, museum visits, pass on our passion for "I get lost in the middle of nowhere to discover things that we would never have seen on the tourist "trails". After a first exchange in April 2019 in Paris, then a second in Saint Malo in June, we went to Montreal and Boston this summer also thanks to the house exchange. We loved it, we can't wait for the next ones to arrive. Vincent no longer lives the week with us since the start of the school year in September 2019, we would like to spend a few weekends 3 hours away from home to find ourselves at 4 and really enjoy these moments. Our favorite destination list is far from complete: the whole world interests us, don't hesitate! Attention: Vincent is very allergic to cats, unfortunately we cannot go to houses where cats live (but you can come to our house... without a cat!) Hello! We are Vincent, a principal assistant in a high school, and Helene, a shopping center manager. We have two kids: Paul, 7, and Alice, 5. They are both going to school. We almost love everything: the sea, the beach, the nature, sailing, diving, cycling, walking, eating, reading... We love museums, getting lost somewhere and just walking to discover the city/town... Before the birth of our two little ones, we traveled a little bit: California, New York, Niagara falls, Dominican Republic, Thaïland, Spain, Sweden, Italy and few times Egypt, we love going there in winter to get warm ;-) But from 2021, we will try to go skiing with the kids, I (Helene), will learn with them.. Since they grew up a little bit (no more naps, more patient...), we want to travel with them, to show them the beauty of nature, of cities, to make them meet people from other countries (Paul could practice its english!!) and most of all, we want to give them the virus of "i get lost lost in the middle of nowhere", it's how we enjoy the most our trips: no tourists, local people... We have had already 4 wonderful exchanges: Paris, Saint Malo, Montreal and Boston. And we are looking forward to the next ones! WARNING: Vincent is very allergic to cats (while i love them too much...) so we cannot go to homes with cats. But you can come to our place... without cats!
