General overview
Welcome to «Sofie’s cottage»! This is our guesthouse next to our main house, presently the home of our daughter Sofie when she is home from work. It’s a charming, cozy and rustic log cabin with ocean views, located in lush, green surrounding close to several beaches and coastal paths. Non-simultaneous exchange or Globe.
For our main house, please see separate listing. Engelsviken is a small coastal community outside the town of Fredrikstad in South-Eastern Norway, and a very popular summer resort with many private summer houses, a small marina and a large camping site, but we live in the outskirts, where it's peaceful even during peak season.
Our home is located just one hour from the Swedish border, and less than 1,5 hours from Oslo, so this is the perfect place to start or end your Norwegian adventure if going to Norway by car.
The cottage or log cabin serves as our guest house. It is located next to the main house, but there is some space between
Globe exchange welcome, but also non simultaneous exchange, as we can only travel during summer.
The space
Our guesthouse has 2 bedrooms.
The main bedroom contains a double bed (150x200 cm) and is suitable for a couple, two close friends, or a parent and a child.
The bathroom contains a shower and a washing machine, and the open concept kitchen is fully equipped with a stove (traditional ceramic cook top, not induction), a fridge and freezer, a dishwasher, a microwave, an airfyer and a small toaster.
The cabin has its own patio (slate slabs and concrete) and you can see the ocean from the living room as well as from the patio. We have a barbecue (for wood), which can be used in the autumn and early spring, but not during summer due to the risk of wild fires.
Guest access
Unfortunately none of our homes are wheelchair accessible.
There are ample parking opportunities on the premises, including one with an electric charger.
We won’t exchange the guest house at the same time as the main house, but we might be in the main house wile you are staying in the guest house. You still have full access to the garden and the garden house. You can also use our big trampoline (at your own risk).
Notes
Car necessary. About 3 km to the mearest grocery stores.
Internet: Please note that there currently isn’t Internet in the cabin, but our WIFI can be accessed from the garden patio of the main house. This should be acceptable during summer, but it might be too cold in other seasons.
Heating: Electrical heating only. There is no fireplace in the cabin.
Allergy friendly: All our homes are strictly non-smoking and fragrance free due to asthma in the family. As a general rule, pets are not allowed to stay the cabin, so it's allergy friendly, but on rare occasions pets might be there for a short time (not in the bedrooms).
Heating: Electrical heating only, as there is no fireplace in the cabin.

Neighbourhood
Here you will find peace and quiet, sea breeze and beautiful nature. We live in the outskirts of a small, charming coastal hamlet, which is very popular during summer, so the center of the village can be quite vibrant during summer. There you will find two very popular restaurants, an equally popular fish shop, a pizza takeaway and an ice cream kiosk.
There are several beaches within walking distance, mostly rock beaches, but there are some small sandy beaches as well.
There are two grocery stores a short drive away, and you will reach two train stations as well as the town of Fredrikstad within 25 minutes by car.
Fredrikstad's main tourist attraction is the historic Fortified Town, which is the best preserved fortified town in Northern Europe: https://www.visitfredrikstadhvaler.com/en/The-Fortified-Town/
Fredrikstad, which is divided by the river Glomma, Norway's longest river, also features a popular dock area which is packed with restaurants, as well as the also very popular city ferries, which are free of charge: https://www.visitfredrikstadhvaler.com/en/product/?tlp=2149803&name=City-ferry
Our home is located about one hour drive from the Swedish border, so when staying here you can experience two countries.
It takes less than 1,5 hour to drive to Oslo, but it can be very difficult and expensive to find parking in downtown Oslo, so we recommend driving to Råde train station (25 minutes) and to take the train to Oslo from there (1 hour).
Getting to my home
Please note that this is a rural area, so you will need a car while you are here. Car exchange can be discussed.
The best way to get here from Oslo Airport Gardermoen (OSL) is by airport shuttle. If we are present when you arrive, we will pick you up at the bus stop, about 15 minutes drive from our home. If not it's possible to book a taxi.
Nearest airport
Oslo Airport Gardermoen, about 2,5 hours away.
Getting around
As mentioned above: You will need a car to get around. There is a bus service from Engelsviken to to Fredrikstad, line 114, but we don't live very close to the bus stop.
