General overview

Comfortable family home in a quiet neighborhood, walkable to downtown with easy access to year-round recreation in the Olympic region of the Adirondacks, a 6-million-acre park in northern New York. Many outdoor activities are within 10 minutes: lakes and rivers for kayaking/swimming/fishing; trails for skiing/hiking/running/mountain biking/alpine skiing. Saranac Lake is an artsy, friendly village of 5,000. No big box stores, just local merchants and restaurants with a solid music, art and theater scene. https://www.saranaclake.com/ Between 1873 and 1945, the village was a premier destination for the treatment of tuberculosis and attracted many famous people to stay in "cure cottages" like my home. Fifty-nine of these cottages are on the National Historic Register. Ten minutes away is Lake Placid, home to the 1932 & 1980 Winter Olympics. Our villages have produced numerous Olympians in luge, bobsled, ski jumping, biathalon. Since 1897, we've celebrated Winter Carnival with friendly competitions like snowflake softball, a huge parade and the construction of an ice palace built of blocks cut from the lake. There's so much to do and see here! And you can also take the ferry across Lake Champlain to Vermont or explore wonderful Montreal, both within two hours. https://youtu.be/WBR6q6EtliY

The space

Built in the 1920's, the house maintains most of the original woodwork, hardwood floors and lots of windows. Heating is hot water baseboard plus a small propane fireplace in the living room so it's cozy in winter. Dining room, kitchen, full bath & office are downstairs. Upstairs are one twin & two queen bedrooms, a sitting room and a bathroom with a tub/shower. Lots of closet space. Laundry is in the unfinished basement which opens to the backyard. Stairs from the kitchen porch also go to the yard.

Guest access

Front access is just two steps from the street and another two onto my porch.

Neighbourhood

My home sits just a block above Lake Flower in the Helen Hill historic district. Across the street is an historic hotel that was later a convent and now a B & B. Though my yard is small, the house is quite private and my neighbors friendly. Just across the street is access through the picturesque cemetery to the new rail-to-trail path. Then a five-minute walk around Moody Pond leads to Mt. Baker, a popular 2-mile hike with an expansive view. of lakes and mountains. A convenience store, deli, bank, 3 churches, hotel, restaurant and boat launch are around the corner.

Getting to my home

It's a beautiful drive from the airport and you'll want a car to explore the area. There's very little public transportation.

Nearest airport

A small local airport (12 mi from my house) has 3 flights daily to/from Boston. These airports are each 2 hours away: Albany, NY; Burlington, VT and Montreal, Quebec. NY City is a 5-hour drive.

Getting around

The entire village is less than 2 miles wide, so downtown is a quick walk along the lake. There are few public transportation options.
