Gesamtübersicht

Comfortable family home in a quiet neighborhood, walkable to downtown with easy access to year-round recreation in the Olympic region of the Adirondacks, a 6-million-acre park in northern New York. Many outdoor activities are within 10 minutes: lakes and rivers for boating/swimming/fishing; trails to ski/hike/run/mountain bike/snowshoe. Excellent golf, rock climbing, snowmobiling. Saranac Lake is an artsy, friendly village of 5,000. No big box stores, just local merchants, farm-to-fork restaurants, solid music, art and theater scene. Between 1873 and 1945, the village was a premier destination for the treatment of tuberculosis and attracted many famous people to stay in "cure cottages" like my home. Fifty-nine of these cottages are on the National Historic Register. Saranac Lake was recently cited as having the highest concentration of historic sites in America. Six miles away is Lake Placid, home to the 1932 & 1980 Winter Olympics and one of three Olympic Training Centers in the US. Tour the ski jumps; see where the Miracle on Ice was played; ride the Cliffside coaster on the former bobsled track. We know how to celebrate! Since 1897, Winter Carnival abounds with friendly competitions like snowflake softball, a huge parade and the construction of an ice palace built of blocks cut from the lake. Summer brings Art Walks, a Plein Air Festival, outdoor concerts and outdoor competitions (canoe, bike and trail races.) Other attractions include a carousel of hand-carved Adirondack animals, a history museum, The Wild Center, sleigh rides, You can take the ferry across Lake Champlain to Vermont or explore wonderful Montreal, both within two hours. NY City, Toronto and Ottawa are all within five hours. Learn more about Saranac Lake at https://www.saranaclake.com/ https://www.youtube.com/c/saranaclake/videos

Der Raum

Built in the 1920's, the house maintains most of the original woodwork, hardwood floors and lots of windows. Dining room, kitchen, full bath & office are downstairs. It's sunny and bright throughout the day. Upstairs are one twin & two queen bedrooms, a sitting room and a bathroom with a tub/shower. Lots of closet space and laundry facilities. Stairs from the kitchen porch lead to the fenced back yard and flower gardens with seating and a fire pit.The covered front porch is sunny in the morning and has a bit of lake view.

Gastzugang

Front access is just two steps from the street and another two onto my porch.

Nachbarschaft

My home sits just a block above Lake Flower in the Helen Hill historic district. Across the street is an historic hotel that was later a convent and now a B & B. Though my yard is small, the house is quite private and my neighbors friendly. Just across the street is access through the picturesque cemetery to the new rail-to-trail path. Then a five-minute walk around Moody Pond leads to Mt. Baker, a popular 2-mile hike with an expansive view. of lakes and mountains. In my neighborhood are a convenience store, deli, bank, boat livery, 3 churches, riverside park, hotel, restaurant, the community college and boat launch.

Zu mir nach Hause kommen

You'll want a car to explore the area. There's very little public transportation.

Nächstliegender Flughafen

The small local airport (SLK), just 12 mi from my house, flies to JFK in NYC and 3x daily to/from Boston on small planes. Other airports 2 hours away: Albany (ALB); Burlington (BTV) and Montreal (YUL). NY City is a 5-hour drive. You could rent a car and drive up or there's a bus from ALB to my neighborhood each afternoon.

Rumkommen

The entire village is less than 2 miles wide, so downtown is a quick walk along the lake. Bicycle rentals are available; beware that we have 4 big hills in the village, so it's a workout. There are few public transportation options, so you'll likely want a car.

Susan

Retired photojournalist who enjoys the outdoors, adventure, culture and travel. I love to scuba dive, cycle, hike, kayak and sail. But I'm also keen on exploring both natural & urban destinations with my camera. My last big adventure was six weeks in Australia, NZ & Bali. I'm itching to travel, though I've been fortunate to live in such a beautiful place to ride out the pandemic. I'm a neatnik & rather handy around the house, so I promise your home will be in good hands with me!
