What We Didn't Expect From Our First PLU Hosting

We didn't know what to expect from our first home exchange. What we got was one of the most genuinely warm holiday experiences we've ever had. 💛

Over Christmas and New Year, we hosted a family from Bali at our Sydney apartment. From the first message, it just clicked. A WhatsApp group that quickly turned chatty, a virtual house tour that felt more like catching up with old friends 👋 —it genuinely felt like we'd known each other for years.

What surprised us most was how the spirit of home exchange changed our own behaviour as hosts. Because there's no transaction at the heart of it, no star ratings to chase or tips to earn, we simply wanted to go above and beyond. We set up a proper cot, sourced an extra car seat, and arranged complimentary Sydney Aquarium tickets through work 🐠 — all of it done with joy, not obligation.

The best surprise came when we returned home: our apartment was cleaner and more organised than when we left it. ✨ That kind of care says everything about the people in this community.

One exchange has already led to three more local weekend swaps (it's genuinely addictive 😄), and we're heading to Bali to stay at our new friends' villa in June 🌴. PLU has quietly changed how we think about travel — slower, more connected, more human.

Here's to many more. 🥂
