Trading Houses, Not Dreams

It started, as many good ideas do, over coffee (or was it wine?) - with an honest conversation about two things we’d decided to stop apologising for: getting older, and wanting more adventure, not less, as the years went on.

We met when our children were five. Twenty-eight years later, we’re still here - best friends who’ve moved through all the usual seasons of life and eventually realised we didn’t want our future to follow a traditional script.

So we rewrote it.

We bought a property with two homes on it and, with limited funds and a few hard-earned lessons from past financial missteps, we remodelled and renovated both. It wasn’t easy - but it became the foundation for something far more valuable than a typical retirement plan. By pooling our resources and thinking creatively, we created two “lock and leave” homes. That flexibility opened the door to a different way of living - one where travel didn’t feel like an occasional escape, but an integrated part of our lives.

That’s where People Like Us came in.

Their values of trust and connection aligned with ours, so we jumped straight in. Home exchange offered us something traditional travel never quite could: the ability to live in a place, not just visit it. We swapped houses instead of booking holidays, stayed longer, spent less, and experienced destinations as temporary locals rather than passing tourists.

It gave us the confidence to take the leap into travelling for up to six months of the year - working remotely, writing when we could, and building a rhythm that blends everyday life with exploration.

We didn’t ease into this lifestyle gently. We arrived early January 2026 in the middle of a storm - the biggest in the history of all storms (at least, that’s how it felt).

Our first exchange took us to Cornwall in 2026, just as Storm Goretti hit the coast. We’d imagined a soft, cinematic arrival: sea mist, a cosy cottage, kettle on within minutes. Instead, we found fallen trees blocking the road, sagging power lines, no running water - and no way to access our home.

For a moment, it would have been easy to question everything. We’d stepped away from the familiar, only to be met with chaos and cold. But it quickly became clear: this is what this lifestyle asks of you. You don’t control the conditions - you choose how you meet them.

Eventually, the road cleared, the water returned, and (three weeks later) so did the internet. We settled into life on the Lizard, though the storms didn’t let up. One system followed another, and it rained almost every day of our six-week stay.

It wasn’t postcard Cornwall - it was something better. Real, raw, and unforgettable.

We walked anyway.

We found the best local cafés and pubs anyway.

We built small, daily rituals anyway.

Those weeks became a collection of simple pleasures: windswept coastal walks, muddy boots, the occasional hunt for reliable Wi-Fi, and the quiet satisfaction of returning to a warm, borrowed home at the end of each day. The experience changed how we think about travel. It’s not about perfect weather or perfectly planned itineraries - it’s about staying curious, adaptable, and open to whatever a place offers. 

From there, we moved on to a three-month exchange in the Cotswolds - another home, another rhythm.

Where Cornwall had been wild and dramatic, the Cotswolds were gentle and grounding. Rolling hills, honey-coloured stone villages, and footpaths through fields and hedgerows - it felt like stepping into a slower, softer pace of life.

But the real gift wasn’t the scenery. It was time.

Time to settle.

Time to become familiar.

Time to feel like we belonged.

We found our local café, our favourite walking routes, and our place in the daily rhythm of village life. We worked and Zoomed like everyone else, but we also experienced something deeper than a holiday: the comfort of living somewhere where we felt more like locals.

These two exchanges - one shaped by storms, the other by stillness - captured everything we now value about this way of travelling. They reminded us that this stage of life isn’t about stepping back. It’s about reshaping what comes next - building a life that holds both structure and spontaneity, work and wandering.

Home exchange, through People Like Us, has made that possible. It’s allowed us to travel more sustainably, more affordably, and more meaningfully than we ever could have through traditional travel. And perhaps most importantly, it’s shown us that it’s never too late to choose a different way of living.

Because the truth is, this journey didn’t begin with perfect timing or perfect conditions. It began with a simple, slightly uncomfortable admission:

We wanted more. And instead of dismissing that feeling, we decided to follow it.
