Introducing PLU Meetups: real people, real places, real connections

Meetups aren't new to PLU. Members have been organising them for years — coffees, dinners, walks, weekend rides, long lunches, drinks at Squires in Sydney. 🙂

We've lost count, honestly. Hundreds of them, all over the world.

What's new is where they live.

Until now, Meetups have been coordinated almost entirely through our Facebook group. That's worked beautifully for the members who are on Facebook — but it's quietly left out everyone who isn't. And these days, that's a lot of you. Members have told us, gently but consistently: "I'd love to come along, but I'm not on Facebook."

So we've built Meetups a home on the PLU platform itself. Same warmth, same spirit, same kind of gatherings — just open to the whole Community now, not only the bit of it that's on Facebook.

How it works

Premium members (the hosts) can create an in-person gathering — a dinner, a walk in the park, a Sunday coffee, a weekend cycle, a long lunch — and invite the rest of the Community along. Other members can browse what's coming up, see who's going, and RSVP with Going, Maybe, or Can't go.

That's the heart of it. The rest is just the bits that make it work smoothly.

RSVPs and waitlists, done properly

Hosts can set a maximum number of attendees — handy when you've booked a table for ten, or your living room only fits so many. When a Meetup fills up, the system runs a waitlist automatically.

A few things we built in deliberately:

  • Premium members get priority on the waitlist.
  • The waitlist is capacity-aware — so if there's a single seat free and the next person in line needs three, we'll skip ahead to the next member whose party fits. No one's locked out by a numbers mismatch.
  • When you're promoted off the waitlist, you've got 48 hours to confirm — enough time to check your calendar, not so long that the host is left hanging.

It's the kind of small-but-thoughtful logic that we hope makes the whole thing feel effortless from both sides — better than a Facebook comment thread can manage, frankly.

Why this matters

When something important to the Community lives outside the platform, we don't fully own the experience — and some members get left out. Bringing Meetups in-house means everyone can see them, everyone can join them, and we can keep making them better.

But there's a bigger reason too.

PLU works because of trust. You hand someone the keys to your home, you sleep in theirs, and the whole thing rests on the quiet confidence that the people on the other side of the exchange are good people. That confidence doesn't appear out of thin air — it builds, layer by layer, through every small interaction members have with each other. A friendly message. A shared recommendation. A coffee while someone's passing through town.

In-person Meetups are where those layers thicken up fastest. You meet someone over a long lunch in Lisbon, and three years later you're staying in their flat in Edinburgh — and it doesn't feel like a stranger's home at all. That's the loop that makes home exchange work, and it's the loop Meetups are designed to strengthen.

So this isn't just a new feature. It's us giving more room to the thing that's quietly been at the heart of PLU all along.

What's coming next

This is the lean version. A few things we're already working on for the next round:

  • Photo gallery from the Meetup — so hosts and attendees can share a few shots after the event.
  • An attendance list — who actually made it, not just who said they would.
  • An archive of past Meetups — so if you came along to that long lunch in Lisbon last spring, you'll be able to find it again (and the photos).

We'll roll those out once the core feature has had a week or two to settle in.

Have a look

You'll find Meetups under the Exchanging menu. If you've got an idea brewing — a coffee meetup in your local, a walk you do every Saturday, a long table at your favourite trattoria — hang tight for a few days while we put the first two through their paces, and we'll open it up shortly.

As always, Member Support is around if anything's not working as you'd expect.

And if you have ideas you'd like to see come to life in our new Meetups feature, let us know in the comments!

Fantastic! I organized a meetup in Calgary and met beautiful PLUs. I was so pumped up that I organized a meetup in Berlin but I didn't make that trip (death in my traveling companion's family). I am so grateful that Manish stepped up to host the Berlin meetup in my absence. All things are possible and it's wonderful to meet other PLUs in person. Thanks for keeping our community lively and growing.

It really is the best thing. It's very heart-warming to see meetups going on around our PLUniverse. I look forward being able to participate in them a little more, even if not able to attend!

That is a wonderful feature. I would like to organize a meetup in Vancouver somewhere during my holiday (6-26 June) , and also one together with Crhistine Pearson fron the UK in my home town Hoofddorp in July.

Hey Martina, when's the meetup? If it's soon, I'll get you set up right away, otherwise I'll just wait a few days and open it up.

Great idea. How do you create a meet up?

Drew
DrewMay 25, 2026

There will be a button to create a meetup on the page. We're just holding off for a few days while we see if there are any little gremlins to iron out. But let me know if you have a meetup soon.

This is one of the best ideas ever. I don’t think of PLU as a home exchange platform I think of it as an incredible group of friends from all over the world. Thanks Drew and Kathy for your amazing insight into how home exchanging should work.

Drew
DrewMay 25, 2026

Thanks, Peta, that's so kind of you. I think of it that way too. This has been an idea for a long while and I'm super happy to see it come to fruition. Now I'll have to load up all our old meetups and populate history. You'll be in a lot of them! 😂

Ah wow! This is really cool. As someone who isn't on FB, I had no idea this was a thing. Keen to get amongst it. Thanks for the thought and care that's clearly gone into making meetups work on the platform.

Drew
DrewMay 25, 2026

Thanks Rose, that's very pleasing to hear. Facebook has been a great place for the community to meet but I've always been disturbed that it leaves too many people out. And, frankly, I don't want to depend on Facebook any more that we have to. We'll be bringing a lot more of our community functionality inhouse. I really hope it shows you a whole new side of PLU!

It's sooooo much better to have it in the site. I like very much that we'll get to test it out immediately. I feel like I should go to Oslo so I'm there at the first! 😂
