How to make your home exchange happen

Finding a home exchange can take a little patience — and that surprises some newcomers.
It's tempting to think of it like a booking platform: enter your dates, filter by location, send a message, done. But home exchanging is something different. It's built on connection, trust, and a bit of mutual curiosity — and that means the process is a little more human, a little more rewarding, and yes, sometimes a little more effort.
For members in high-demand locations, exchanges can come together quickly. For others, it takes time, energy, and genuine enthusiasm. Either way, the tips below have helped plenty of PLU members make their dream exchange a reality.
Complete your listing — and make it sing
Your listing is your calling card. Tell people what's wonderful about your corner of the world: what's fun to see and do, where you buy your bread, which restaurants you'd take a visiting friend to. Why do you love living there? The members who write listings with real warmth and local knowledge are the ones who get messages.
Show your home at its best
Good photos make an enormous difference. You don't need a professional shoot — just tidy up, make the beds, put away the clutter, and take your pictures in natural daylight. Show the bedroom, the living room, the kitchen. Show the spaces people will actually live in.
Search smart
Start by filtering for "Members who want to travel to…" If your location is already on someone's wish list, your chances improve significantly. Then add a couple of filters that matter most to you — whether that's Suitable for Children, Cat Free, or something else entirely.
Write a message worth reading
A generic copy-and-paste inquiry rarely gets a response. A genuine, personal message — one that shows you've actually looked at their listing — is far more likely to start a conversation. You might send quite a few before you get that first "We might be interested!" reply. But when it comes, you'll be ready.
Use the Facebook Community, and the Feed
Posting your travel dream (with your PLU listing link and a few of those selling points from your listing) gets you in front of members who might never have found you through a website search. And you'll often spot exchange opportunities you hadn't even thought to look for.
Try a local exchange first
A swap closer to home is a wonderful way to get the full exchange experience without the pressure of a big international trip. You'll also pick up a review for your listing — which makes the next exchange easier to land.
Be flexible, and think ahead
The harder you make your criteria, the harder the search becomes. If you can only travel one specific week, in one specific city, and you start looking two months out — it's a tough ask. A little flexibility on timing and destination opens up a lot of doors.
Mix and match
You don't have to choose between home exchange and traditional accommodation. Stay at a hotel or rental in your must-visit city, then extend your trip with a PLU exchange somewhere less obvious. You might discover a place you love even more.
Say yes to somewhere new
There are so many wonderful cities, villages, and towns in the world — places most travellers never think to seek out. Some of the most memorable exchanges happen in the places you never planned to go.
The search takes time. But that feeling when the right exchange finally comes together? Worth every message. 🏡

Thank you for sharing. This was very helpful.
Great advice! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for this excellent advice, I agree wholeheartedly!! People Like Us is about finding your match... like in the rest of our lives, being flexible and curious is always a recipe for happiness.
Thank you, Shawn and Bill!! I have had lovely exchanges in the past year, and the best ones were heartfelt. Trust, honesty, and kindness can transpire through the pictures and exchanges. You can feel the warmth you know you will experience when visiting. Have a wonderful summer, and welcome to the Crows' Nest in Montpellier (QC) anytime! Cheers :)
Great article…. And it’s no surprise that it came from you two! We look forward to hosting you again in NYC this fall. 😇
Fantastic article, thank you! While new to the PLU community I’ve done lots of exchanges through other platforms over 25 years. And indeed, as you suggest, the most memorable exchanges have been to locations I would’ve never previously considered. We use the mantra “why not travel to…?”. And one additional suggestion: be fearless about proactive outreach. The worst that can happen is that someone says no or doesn’t get back to you.
This is brilliant Shawn and Bill. Great tips for making home exchange work for you. Thanks for sharing 💕
Thanks for taking the time to write this guide. I think I'll review my listing to make it sing!
I can tell I’m going to be reposting this in the FB groups a lot 🙂
Btw your listing is one of our favorites :-)
What a great summary! I think the part that it can tike time to find the very first swap is the largest surprise to newcomers. Knowing you can book a hotel nowadays in a couple of seconds only.
