The Year Ahead: How PLU Members Are Choosing to Travel
How the PLU Community is embracing slower, deeper, more intentional travel in the year ahead

Every year, the travel conversation shifts a little. Not always toward completely new places, but toward new ways of experiencing familiar ones. And as we look at what's happening inside the PLU Community right now, one thing stands out: people are being more intentional about how they travel — and it's lovely to see.
Slower, Deeper, More Personal
Rather than rushing from place to place, many of our members are choosing to slow down. Fewer stops. Longer stays. Time to settle into a rhythm rather than chase highlights. It's less about ticking things off a list and more about how travel fits into everyday life — which, when you think about it, is exactly what home exchange was made for.
Europe: Living Like a Local (For Real This Time)
Across Europe, interest continues to grow in places that reward immersion over movement. Smaller towns and regional areas in Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal are drawing members in — not for the spectacle, but for the everyday. Shopping at the local market. Walking streets that start to feel familiar. Getting a nod from the bakery owner by day three.
That feeling of becoming part of a neighbourhood, even for a few weeks? That's the magic of People Like Us — and it's what more and more members are looking for.
Australia: Space, Light, and Slowing Right Down
Australia is firmly part of the conversation this year, particularly for its summer warmth and glorious sense of space. There's a growing curiosity around places that feel expansive and quietly special rather than heavily travelled.
Western Australia's coastline is a perfect example. From Perth's relaxed beaches to the turquoise bays of Rottnest Island — where cars are swapped for bikes and the quokkas outnumber the tourists — these are places where days are shaped by nature rather than schedules. Further south, the Margaret River region offers world-class food and wine set against dramatic coastline and towering forests. It's the kind of travel that resonates deeply with the way our members like to live: unhurried, grounded, and genuinely refreshing.
Canada: Fresh Air and Wide Open Landscapes
Canada is seeing renewed interest too, especially among members drawn to the outdoors. National parks, lakes, forests, and mountain regions offer a sense of scale that invites you to step away from your usual routine and just breathe.
Travel here tends to be centred on walking, hiking, swimming, and time spent outside. It appeals to anyone looking for fresh air, open landscapes, and experiences that feel grounding rather than over-programmed. (And honestly — who couldn't use a bit of that?)
Travelling With the Seasons
There's also a lovely trend emerging around travelling with the seasons in mind. Coastal stays and countryside escapes chosen specifically for what they offer at different times of year. Cooler months spent walking hillside trails or gathering indoors over long meals. Warmer months shaped by water, food, and those endless summer evenings that make you forget what day it is.
What It All Comes Down To
What connects all of these choices is intention. The year ahead is shaping up to be one where people are more selective — choosing fewer places, staying longer, and looking for experiences that feel aligned with how they actually want to live.
Travel has always offered perspective. But increasingly, it's offering something else too: a sense of grounding. A chance to feel settled somewhere new. And that's exactly what home exchange does best.
Here's to a year of thoughtful, unhurried, wonderful exchanges. 🏡
