General Overview
We have a south-facing chalet in Slovenia which is built on 3 levels. It's a real 'home from home' and has stunning South facing views across Slovenia. It is located in a small hamlet and is blissfully peaceful and quiet and yet has easy access to the main motorway so that you can explore Slovenia's many delights during the day. Only about half an hour to Ljubljana and Bled, and about an hour to Kranjska Gora and Bohinj.
We've owned the house for 17 years and have spent many happy holidays there - we have never been bored!
The Space
There are 3 bedrooms on the top floor - one double, one twin and one single. Two of the bedrooms lead out to the top balcony.
There is a large living room and bathroom on the middle floor. We have a smart TV, a great selection of books and DVDs to choose from and the living room has a door leading onto the middle balcony.
There is a large combined kitchen & dining area on the ground floor. The kitchen is very well equipped with everything you might need.
Outside we have a very steep garden to the side and back of the house, with fruit trees. There's a lovely shaded dining area and we have a BBQ you can use.
Guest Access
3 floors - steep steps and unfortunately not suitable for small children or those with limited mobility.

Neighbourhood
All of Slovenia's main attractions are within very easy reach, including Ljubljana, Bled, Bohinj and Kranjska Gora, but you can also explore Slovenia's lesser-known delights and take part in a really wide range of outdoor activities. There's excellent walking right from the door, plus we have local horse riding, paragliding, tennis, rock climbing, fishing, road cycling and mountain biking.
In winter Krvavec ski resort is literally just above the chalet, offering excellent skiing and snowboarding, or you could try sledging or ice skating just a short drive away.
There's one very basic bar/restaurant in the village, otherwise there are others a short drive away (5-10 mins)
Getting to my home
The nearest airport is Ljubljana (15 mins away) - otherwise you can fly into Trieste, Klagenfurt, Venice or Zagreb (all a couple of hours) You'll need a car - car rental is relatively inexpensive and the roads are generally quiet.
Nearest airport
Ljubljana (15 mins drive)
Getting Around
By car - it's 5-7 minutes drive to the nearest town but it's down/up a very steep hill!
We greatly appreciate Penny and Graham introducing us to Slovenia. We spent two wonderful weeks exploring Ljubljana, hiking in the mountains, and visiting villages across the country. Penny and Graham had plenty of tips that we found incredibly helpful; from rental cars, to restaurants, to milk dispensing machines, to their drawer full of fantastic maps and recommended hikes. Everything was well laid out and made for a perfect trip.
We really enjoyed staying at their chalet overlooking the valley. Their home is well equipped, fully stocked, and quite comfortable. Their chalet also is centrally located so we easily found everything we needed close by during our stay.
While we were often out exploring, we found it easy to relax and just enjoy their village. Mornings usually started with coffee on the porch and ended on one of the decks taking in the views with an evening drink. We especially loved hearing the church bells as the sound made its way across the valley.
While we didn’t have a chance to meet in person, communicating with Penny and Graham before our arrival and during our stay was very easy and enjoyable.
Slovenia is beautiful, the people are friendly, and Penny and Graham were fantastic hosts. We highly recommend a visit and exchange. We hope they enjoy Montserrat when they come to visit and look forward to hosting them in return. Thank you, Penny and Graham!
One of the best home exchanges we have ever had, in every way! Charming comfortable and spacious chalet, with views to die for! Perfect location for visiting the most beautiful locations in the Slovenian Alps. Great communications and a new friendship with the lovely Penny and Graham, who really helped us make the most of our stay with all the info they provided (and hiking poles they lent us!), and great recommendations including for very reasonable car hire. We feel very lucky that they offered us this exchange opportunity, and were kind enough to postpone our visit to their home when I needed a hip replacement! Can’t describe how beautiful their region of Slovenia is, how easy it is to get into Ljubljana from there (such a beautiful and interesting city), and how kind and friendly the Slovenian people are. The perfect PLU experience!
Thanks so much for such a lovely review Helen - looking forward to hearing all about your new-found love for Slovenia!
Penny was so sweet to put together information about the area and vegan friendly ideas. Her home is situated on a mountain with an incredible view. Everything was clean, cozy and inviting. We had such a great trip exploring from Bled to Ljubljana - it truly is a magical place.
We are so exciting we decided to take this short trip!
Penny and Graham's home is located in a small town with a cracker of a view on the valley below that we especially enjoyed early mornings ( fog still slowly lifting) or in the evenings ( great for a sunset supper). You access the house through one of those one way "streets" always surprising to a North American ( are you sure its there honey moment...). You can walk around but obviously a car is a must. The house itself is on three levels and is equipped with all needed commodities. Its a perfect location to enjoy many of Slovenia's great treasures and scenery! On a rainy day we chose from one of Penny's and Graham's film collection and enjoyed watching a classic... for those you enjoy cycling I was told that the house is located in Tadej Pocacar's old playground.. I recommend Penny and Graham's house and add that Penny was dedicated to making sure we had the greatest of times during our stay.
Thanks Patric! Impressed you found out the Tadej Pocacar info! You'll have to do some cycling if you get to Slovenia again. Thanks to you and Sophie for being such amazing hosts and guests 🥰 🥰
Penny's home was so peaceful. The view was amazing. We were due to arrive when Slovenia had their worst floods ever. It was a bit stressful as to whether we could actually go. Penny was super helpful during that period despite not living there. She really communicated well helped us out and have is advice. I really appreciated our communication. It turned out that some flood affected areas were closed and the damage was visible in those areas ( support sad) but the rest was pristine and gorgeous as ever. We loved our stay. Lots of driving to get to places but all worth it. We live in Amsterdam and don't have a car so for someone who usually drives maybe it would not feel that way there are supermarkets close by, people are lovely, but it's the nature that will make your trip. I definitely recommend an exchange with Penny.
Thanks Sarah - and thanks for your resilience during the floods crisis. Slovenia will certainly have been very different to Amsterdam - happy that you explored it and hope your week in Croatia was fab.
we were welcomed into penny's house in exchange for a globe and it was great!!! his house nestled in a small mountain village conducive to rest and contemplation of nature. its magnificent view of the valley allows you to observe summer storms in safety and shelter! what a wonderful sight! the house is very well equipped! everything is there! and its location makes it very easy to discover Slovenia! thanks penny
Thanks Cyrille and Amelie - we’re happy that you all loved our home and Slovenia!
We had a wonderful stay at Penny and Graham's lovely house! We have been coming to this beautiful area for holidays for several years and absolutely love it. Communication was great; Penny provided detailed info about the house and the area. The house is very comfortable and well-equipped, also perfectly located close to all the best hiking and sight-seeing. The terrace in front of the house and the balconies have spectacular views; perfect for warm summer evenings. We only wished our schedule allowed us to stay longer, and we hope to come back again!
Thanks so much Wendy - come back anytime 🥰
Penny's place was fantastic. It's got a million dollar view that inspired us to have dinner on the patio several times. It's a great starting point for adventures all over, and within easy striking distance of Ljubljana, Lake Bled, Lake Bohinj, the Sava river, Velika Planina and the mountains and other nature destinations in general. Excellent communication with Penny. Friendly local cats, loads of blackberries, fresh air, a well-appointed and comfortable flat with everything you might need, and a lovely bottle of cava awaiting us on our arrival. Thanks for a great experience, Penny!!
Sorry to be so late have only just found the ‘reply’ button! Thanks for being such fab guests and for the great review! 😍😍
Penny and Graham spent 10 days at my home. Communications with Penny were outstanding she is absolutely dedicated to immersing herself in the local way of life and she and Graham obviously shared a great deal of passions with me which made it that much more interesting for both. They took great care of my things and more importandly they created a rich human contact that I think makes exchanges so special. They met and spent some tome sailing with one of my friends who confirms how nice they were! I strongly recommend Penny and Graham as guests you won't be disappointed!
Awww - thank you Patric 😍 And big hugs to Francois too 🤗
It was a really special exchange experience and SO much richer & better than any 'normal' holiday. Thank you Patric, and PLU!
Wonderful guests. Just the way you want someone to be who stays at your house!
Penny and Graham were the first guests at Lunz am See and I was curious how it will work out. The house, the garden, the area, the hiking, etc.
Being experienced traveller and mountain hikers they didcreally well and found their way to the most beautiful places here.... which again made me very happy!!
All the best to you, where ever you go, dear Penny and dear Graham! Save journey back to England!
Awww thank you Dagmar! 😍 We miss you, your beautiful home and Lunz Am See already. Thank you for everything and let’s keep in touch x
Penny and Graham are our first exchangers on PLU, and it was a real pleasure to arrange it with them. They have a genuine interest in engaging with local people and the local culture, and were very respectful of our home. They were also very understanding about the fact that the infrastructure in our remote village in the mountains of Morocco is not as reliable as in the UK or Europe! We are now looking forward to planning our. non-simultaneous trip to their home in Slovenia in September, and are sure they will give us lots of good ideas and info.
Leanne and Peter have been fantastic exchange partners in the first leg of our exchange: them visiting Slovenia. We've not met in person but communications have been great and they've left our home in perfect condition, along with a lovely thank you note and gift. They loved Slovenia and we're really happy to have made contact with them. Thank you PLU!
We're so happy to have met Helen and Michael through PLU - they've been an absolute delight since our first contact and were fabulous guests. They explored Slovenia with huge energy, interest and enthusiasm and really appreciated both the country and our home. Going a BIG step beyond, they washed and dried the large pile of laundry that our previous PLU exchange guests had left 🤨 as well as their own. They've also sent detailed notes on what we need to buy before we go over next time. We'd highly recommend Helen and Michael as guests to anyone lucky enough to get the chance to exchange with them - their home in Morocco is wonderful, and so are they.
Thank you so much for your kind words, Penny! The feelings are entirely mutual! A perfect PLU experience 🥰
I haven't actually been able to see the house since Lana & family left but it looks great from the photos she sent me. Lana was an easy exchange partner and good to deal with. Looking forward to our trip to Portugal!
Patric's home is his dream - and ours too! It's beautiful - managing to combine style and quality with relaxation, happiness and nature. Perfect, and there's absolutely nothing that we didn't love. Cooking in his amazing kitchen was a treat, and coffee on the dock to start each day was perfection. We loved hearing (and even seeing) the loons on the lake, the hummingbirds and other birds visiting the feeders and even spotted bald and golden eagles soaring overhead,.
Patric is a fantastic host: warm, generous, fun and keen to share his love for the Mont Tremblant region. Which he very successfully did - we had a great time getting 'out there' - hiking, kayaking, sailing, swimming and SUPing.
If you get the chance to exchange with Patric - grab it!
Patric was a perfect exchange guest: keen to explore, understand and 'feel' Slovenia - full of enthusiasm and energy. He and Sophie embraced our various suggestions on what to do and see - making the suggestions was easy as we share many common interests.
Given that we were swapping our second home for Patric's primary home, the exchange wasn't really equal on many levels (at least on paper) but Patric didn't seem to mind and we really appreciate his generosity on that front.
We've not actually seen our home since they left, but feel 100% confident that Patric and Sophie will have left it in perfect condition. Getting to know them has been great - thank you PLU!
Sarah and her family coped well with the devastating floods that hit Slovenia whilst they were literally on their way to our exchange. After much to-ing and fro-ing we decided that they should come regardless, as they were happy to help with clean-up operations if needed. In the event our house wasn't really affected and Sarah managed to have a good holiday in what is still a very beautiful Slovenia.
Amelie and Cyrille were lovely exchange guests. They coped with a very changeable week weather-wise, and enjoyed exploring Slovenia. They were very independent and didn't really need any help from ourselves. They also left the house spotlessly clean, which was a great relief as we had back-to-back exchanges and couldn't get to the house ourselves to check it. Thanks Amelie and Cyrille and we're glad you enjoyed the storms!
thanks for everything penny! you are adorable !!!
Dagmar’s home in Lunz am See is incredibly special and it was a real treat to be able to spend 8 days there. The house is beautiful, stylish, historic and homely, with a wonderful ‘feel’. The views are stunning and the garden is beautiful. The bed was the comfiest we’ve slept in - including our own! The fact that Dagmar has preserved the house’s historic authenticity is wonderful - we loved cooking on the ancient wood-fired stove.
We also loved the local area and did some fantastic walks - we felt very ‘immersed in nature’ which is always a core goal for us.
We were very sad to leave and hope to return one day. Highly recommended for those seeking a special experience, simplicity and a break from the modern world 💚
Thank you for this wonderful feedback! Of course you are welcome again!!
Annie & Pascale's home is beautiful, and set in a gorgeous hill-top Provencal village - very quiet and completely unspoilt. The house is large and homely - we visited in March and loved the log fire during the cold early spring evenings. Take either CDs or a phone adaptor for the great music system! There's a lovely garden full of wildflowers, and a big table both inside and in, with plenty of seating. Definitely recommended to anyone who wants a homely base to explore 'the real Provence' from.
The Rose House is truly wonderful - we loved it and have never seen or stayed in a house that's been renovated and furnished with so much passion for the local area and its people. Nor so much flair - countless lamps, rugs and artworks give it a beautifully welcoming, warm atmosphere - even in the depths of winter!
Helen & Michael are fantastic to deal with - with a real depth of knowledge about Morocco that they're very happy to share so that guests can make the most of their stay. We now count them as friends!
Morocco is amazing and the Dades Valley probably the most beautiful area we visited. It's very much off the beaten track and gives a real insight into how people in the mountains live - and it's generally a tough life, especially at the moment with severe water shortages. The people are warm and welcoming, and the local walks and kasbahs stunning. We enjoyed several day trips with our fantastic driver, Daoud, including to the Sahara, Msemrir and the Valley of the Roses. All were outstanding.
So thank you so much Helen & Michael - we have so many precious memories of our stay at the Rose House. What a magical home you have created and thank you for sharing it with us.
Wendy and Veit were fantastic guests: very flexible when both our circumstances unfortunately kept changing and lovely to communicate with. They took great care of our house and we'd love to welcome them back at any time. Definitely recommend them to others and we very much hope to get to their beautiful home in the Vienna Woods one day.
Lisa and Ben were wonderful exchange partners - our first with PLU. Great communication throughout and they looked after our home really well - leaving it sparkling, with homemade blackberry tarts in the freezer. Couldn't ask for more and would recommend them to anyone.
