General overview

When you think about a quintessential French cottage then you’ve found it. Situated in a stunning hamlet, overlooking green pastures, our cottage is a 3-400 year old stone building over three levels. It has very comfortable accommodation for 4 people with a well equipped kitchen and a small terrace for sitting out. It is quaint and slightly quirky. What makes it even more special is its proximity to world class tourist sights, the Dordogne River, canoeing and biking, and first class restaurants.

The space

You enter the cottage into the living, dining and kitchen area. There is a wood fire if needed. From this area you can access a small terrace where you can sit in the evening and admire the view of the fields in front of you. Upstairs from the living area is a spacious loft with two single beds and an a/c. The spacious double bedroom is located downstairs from the living level and the bathroom is also located here. A picture window in both the bedroom and Living space provide beautiful views.

Guest access

There are definitely stairs to negotiate and children would need to be old enough to do this safely.

Notes

There is a comfortable two seater recliner lounge and two tub chairs in the living room. A dining table and six chairs. A very efficient fan overhead and a comprehensive CD and DVD collection.

Neighbourhood

The neighbourhood itself is enough to tempt you to come here. The village and buildings are so pretty to simply walk around and observe. Above the village is the Chateau which was once a commanderie. The cottages themselves would once have been workers’ Cottages servicing the Chateau and form a ring around the base of the chateau. The Chateau has been restored and is privately owned. The Chateaus...Beynac and Castelnaud are close to where we live and are breathtakingly beautiful, as are the renowned Marqueyssac Gardens with extensive box tree topiary. Markets flourish here, and a 20 minute drive will find you in the historic town of Sarlat. If cave drawings which date back millions of years are your thing, then you are spoilt for choice.

Getting to my home

You can drive to Berbiguieres from Paris or other main European cities but we would probably suggest Bordeaux. It’s a pleasant 2 and a half hour drive from Bordeaux. From Paris you can train to Brive la Gaillard hire a car at the Brive station and drive a half hour to the cottage. We assist with all travel plans if needed. Bergerac and Brives airports are within an hour’s drive.

Nearest airport

Bergerac...50 minutes Brive...1 hour.

Getting around

You definitely need a car at the cottage. Once here however, hiking, biking and definitely canoeing are all on offer and easy to access.

Rae

My husband Neil and I are from Melbourne but we are passionate Francophiles which resulted in us buying a 300+ year old cottage in the Dordogne, Perigord Noir, over 10 years ago. We are retired musicians who enjoy travelling. We have undertaken several home swaps using our French cottage ( simultaneously and non) and have explored the NSW coastline and Queensland’s beautiful Sunshine Coast. We would be open to swaps in Europe too as we spend three months in France every year. Every home swap we’ve undertaken has resulted in making new and wonderful friendships. Our cottage is absolutely charming and set in a very peaceful part of the Dordogne with so much to see and experience.
