Neighbourhood

For those seeking a genuinely relaxing coastal escape, our home makes a wonderful base for exploring the spectacular beaches, coastal walks, vineyards, culture and natural beauty of Northland’s subtropical Far North. Cable Bay sits within beautiful Doubtless Bay, in the subtropical “winterless” Far North of New Zealand. This region is known for its spectacular coastline, warm climate, relaxed pace of life, and outstanding natural beauty. Doubtless Bay stretches along the east coast of Northland and includes a collection of stunning beaches with a variety of sand colours from white to golden pink to classic grey found in coastal villages such as Tokerau Beach, Taipā, Cable Bay, Coopers Beach, and Mangonui. Our holiday home is perfectly positioned as a base for exploring Northland and the wider Far North. Highlights include: • Te-Oneroa-a-Tōhē / 90 Mile Beach • Karikari Peninsula, with its wineries and idyllic beaches • The Bay of Islands, one of New Zealand’s premier coastal destinations • Waitangi, site of the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the nation’s founding document For insight to local colonial history, the Butler Point Whaling Museum and Gardens in nearby Hihi offer an exceptional guided experience into local, colonial, maritime history. Bookings essential or call 0800 Museum. https://butlerpoint.co.nz/ You’ll find a variety of places to eat locally, from relaxed restaurants to food trucks, particularly around Coopers Beach, Taipā and Mangonui, famous for its fish and chips. Just down the hill and across the road from the beach is the Cable Bay Store, a beloved local dairy known for outstanding New Zealand ice cream, great cabinet food and excellent takeaway options. Coopers Beach village offers a well-stocked, boutique "Four Square" supermarket with a strong wine and beer selection; a range of essential services including a bakery, beauty salon, massage therapist, hardware store, medical centre , liquor store and more. The Mangonui Cruising Club in nearby Mill Bay also provides a friendly local bar and social hub with meals available on Friday nights which must be pre-ordered by 8PM Thursday - see the Facebook page for details. https://www.facebook.com/groups/183519926417590 You need to be signed by a member but just ask nicely when you arrive; I'm sure someone will oblige. Around 25 minutes away, Kaitaia provides larger, "big box" retail options such as The Warehouse, Mitre 10, Bunnings, Pak’nSave supermarket and Farmers, a small department store. It’s not flashy, but it has everything you need. While you’re in Kaitaia, Peekaboo café and restaurant is an excellent choice, recognised nationally for both quality and sustainability. Whether you want beaches, coastal or bush walks, culture, history, good food or simply a slower pace, this region delivers it in abundance. Come and see for yourself!

Nearest airport

The closest airport to our home is Kaitaia Airport, (https://kaitaiaairport.co.nz/) approximately 30–35 minutes’ drive away. Barrier Air (https://www.barrierair.kiwi) operates regular direct flights between Auckland and Kaitaia, making this a convenient option for domestic travellers or those connecting through Auckland. The airport is very small, and transport options are limited, so onward travel should be arranged in advance. Many guests find the Bay of Islands Airport in Kerikeri the easiest option. (https://www.bayofislandsairport.co.nz/) It is around a 45–50 minute flight from Auckland and approximately 50 minutes by car from our home in Cable Bay. The regional airport is a bit bigger than Kaitaia's, very welcoming and easy to navigate. Rental cars, transfers and taxis are available from Kerikeri. We strongly recommend booking ahead, particularly during holiday periods. (https://www.bayofislandsairport.co.nz/car-rentals) For local transport options, see: Bay of Islands Airport transfers and parking information. (https://www.bayofislandsairport.co.nz/airport-taxis).

Getting Around

A car is strongly recommended for exploring Northland’s Far North and making the most of your stay. The region is wonderfully scenic but quite spread out, with beautiful beaches, coastal villages, wineries and attractions best reached by car. If you prefer a slower pace, it is certainly possible to relax locally without a vehicle and simply enjoy the beach, views and village atmosphere. For guests doing a car exchange with us, we aim to make arrival as easy as possible and, where practical, facilitate collecting the vehicle first. The local area is walkable if you are comfortable with hills. The beach, local dairy/takeaway, and bus stop are down the hill, while the return walk back is a moderate incline. Our street and residential complex are well lit and generally very peaceful. Cycling is possible for confident riders, though roads in this rural coastal area can be narrow in places and are shared with traffic, including big articulated vehicles, so many visitors prefer to explore by car. Rental cars, transfers and taxis are available from Auckland airport and Kerikeri, though we strongly recommend booking ahead, particularly during holiday periods.
