General overview

Our home was built in 1900 by two brothers. They also built the house next door, built in 1905. Our home was the manse for the minister for the Presbyterian Church across from our place for many years. We have a lovely corner property on a quiet street. Lots of trees and open space also.

The space

We have 3 bedrooms, one of which is in use as a home office. The master bedroom and office are bright and cheery, and our boy's bedroom, also very bright, has one wall that is entirely blackboard, so they can draw on the walls with chalk as often as they like. It's wild! The yard is beautiful, quite large, (1/3 of an acre) bordered by a stone wall on one side, a wrought-iron fence on one side, an alley at the back of the house (the church is there and is quite attractive, and the neighbor's property on the 4th side. We have a lovely assortment of trees, inclusing a 160 year-old Silver Maple and a very diverse set of other types, including a Weeping Cherry, a Spruce, a Japanese Katsura, and the kind of Ginko tree that doesn't drop the smelly stuff!

Guest access

We have two floors, not including the un-finished attic. Two bathrooms, hardwood floors, molding, a gas fireplace, and updated kitchen with new appliances (1 yr. old) and laundry room off the back door. The home is 1700 sq. feet with a large kitchen, large dining room and living room.

Neighbourhood

Shepherdstown is a very small, gorgeous little town of about 1600 people. Amazing restaurants, and a few bars dot the main street, we have a wonderful independent bookstore, antique shops, and Shepherd University right in town. Our neighborhood is quiet, with mostly older couples up and down the street. The Post Office is across the street and from April to Christmas, the Farmers Market is open every Sunday behind the library two blocks from our home (nothing in Shepherdstown is more than a lovely, short walk from our home) and the shops and art galleries liven up the town nicely. The train passes by several times a day, but is remarkable unobtrusive. In winter, it can sometimes be glimpsed through the trees, but once Spring hits and everything starts blooming, this neighborhood and town really come into their own. Town Run is a stream running right through town and passes through several yards and one cafe garden.

Getting around

We are no more than 2-3 blocks from everything in town, up to five if you'd like to have a meal at the Blue Moon Cafe.
