We are a family of four: Marta, Philip and our two kids, a boy and a girl, currently 8 and 6 y.o. We live in Dublin but I am Italian and so we speak Italian at home and the kids are growing up bilingual. Philip works in the energy sector, while I work as freelance writer in the travel sector. We love spending time together as a family and we have many interests: in our free time we love to read books, take photos, go on walks on the mountains near here, write, but most of all we like to travel. The kids seem to love it too and they have been very flexible and adaptable on all our holidays so far. They are still small but they are very good at respecting other people's homes/toys: we have been on 6 home exchanges so far and they've gone really well: we can't wait to organise the next one! We now live in Dublin but we both lived abroad and loved it and we are looking forward to having a taste of it again.
Our home is a lovely town house in a green and quiet estate. It's on three levels, with kitchen / living area downstairs, 3 bedrooms on the second floor and a play-room in the recently converted attic which is lovely and full of natural light. It has a nice, enclosed garden with grass, a patio area to eat out and a slide. We live here with our two kids and this is very much a family home, very child- friendly. The area is green and safe: shops, cafes and a beautiful park are 5 minutes walk from here and the bus stop to the city centre is just in front of the estate: you can get there in 15 minutes, on a direct bus line. Local shops include supermarkets, craft butchers and specialty shops. In summer our local park hosts a weekly market as well which is very popular with local families and a lovely day out . The area has a nice community feel and many families live here. The house is bright and colorful and all appliances are new. The house is perfect for a family as it has 3 bedrooms: one master bedroom en-suite, a room with 2 single children beds and one room which is now used as a study room/guestroom with a single bed, a desk and bookshelves. We have 2 upstairs bathrooms and one guest bathroom downstairs. We have recently renovated two of the bathrooms and the en-suite now has a walk-in rain shower and brand new tiling. We also upgraded the floors downstairs just a few months ago. Just recently, we have converted our attic which is now a bright and spacious play room with the kids toys (lego, cars, trains, teddies, arts and crafts supplies etc) / music corner with keyboard and guitar and a small desk (we are still finishing the floors, photos to follow shortly). The house has cable TV, Netflix and Wi-Fi as well as washing machine, dryer, dishwasher etc. Our area is the perfect base to explore Dublin but also the rest of Ireland. Dublin is a lovely city for a family: the centre is compact and walkable and it has many museums and attractions for both adults and kids (I have a list I usually leave for our guests with our favourite things). The Dublin and Wicklow mountains with their beautiful hikes are a short drive away and the beach is easily accessible too. We have done car exchanges before and we would be happy to discuss this option with you, should you want to make the most of your stay and visit the rest of the country too. From Dublin, it is possible to visit the rest of Ireland easily and our guests often made the most of this option using our house as a base for longer excursions: Galway is 208 Km away, the cliffs of Moher 266 Km and Blarney Castle is 264 Km.
Our house has 3 floors: the groundfloor has the hallway / kitchen-dining area and living room plus a small bathroom, the first floor has the 3 bedrooms and we have recently renovated the third floor, which is now an attic we use as guest room and play room, filled with light. I don't have photos of it yet as we are putting in the final touches but will be done in the next few days and I'll add photos asap. Our house as stairs and unfortunately not accessible if you have difficulties negotiating them.
We have no pets and this is an allergy free home, with laminate floors in the room to minimise dust etc.We can accommodate 2 adults in a double and 3 kids comfortably and there is an option of an extra space using the sofa bed on the third floor (there is a door so this can become a private room).
We love our neighborhood: it is the perfect combination of city living and suburban calm! It is green and quiet but also very well serviced with shops, cafes, some really good restaurants and a small library. Dublin city centre is a stone throw away and you have easy access to all the entertainment options it has to offer, but none of the stress of busy city centre streets. It is an older part of town so there is a lovely community feeling here and it is very safe, while not at all boring! Shops include supermarkets, specialty shops, a craft butcher and wine merchant. Sports facilities such as gym and a swimming pool are nearby (open to non members too). We are only 15 mins by bus from the city centre, on a direct bus line (actually 3 direct bus lines), 15 minutes from the big Dundrum shopping centre and 30 mins from the Dublin mountains and Wicklow County, fantastic for its hill walks and lakes. One of the great things we love about living here is that you don't need the car: from the house, you can walk to the park, restaurants and shops in 5 minutes and the buses will bring you into Dublin city centre very quickly. As well as good access to the city centre, we are a great base to explore Ireland: being already on the South of the city, you can access the motorway without worrying about rush hour traffic and can quickly reach most parts of the country. We have done car exchanged before and will be happy to consider this option again and help you with places to see and directions. I am always happy to help our guests plan a stay and would be happy to leave you info on how to enjoy the city and what not to miss in Ireland.
We live in between two sets of shops, both 5 mins away on foot: they include supermarkets, deli shops, restaurants, cafes, pubs etc. Dublin historical centre (Trinity college etc) is a short bus ride away from our house: the bus stops right outside our estate, you reach it in less than a minute, and brings you into town in about 15 minutes.
