General overview

Nestled in the borough of Santa Luzia and only a 15 minute walk from central Funchal you will find this amazingly light, spacious and very Madeiran 2 bedroom apartment. Originally a beautiful Quinta (farmhouse) this apartment has equal amounts of inside and outside space giving you breathtaking views over Funchal, the Mountains and the Harbour. From the very large fully equipped lounge and dining area with its beautiful Madeiran wood floor, the spacious 2 newly renovated bedrooms both with King-size beds to the luxurious newly renovated bathroom this apartment provides you with all the comforts you could wish for with the added bonus of being within walking distance and therefore accessible to central Funchal.

The space

Welcome to our apartment that feels like a house. Approximately 20+ years ago the Quinta (farmhouse) was converted into seven apartments. Originally our apartment was going to be two apartments however due to a change in the final building plans it became just one, therefore, it is a very large and spacious apartment that amazingly has more outside space than inside space. We have slowly over the years updated the bathroom, bedrooms and made many improvements to our outside areas.

Guest access

Our apartment is on the first floor. There are a total number of 18 stairs to our apartment from the ground floor. We have two garages, one of which could be utilised if you, for example hired a car.

Notes

Madeira is a volcanic island and is therefore very hilly. Whilst as stated it is a 15 minute walk down into Funchal walking back up may take just a few minutes longer. Alternatively if you do not fancy doing this there are many taxi companies, apps that will drop you off outside the door for €5.00 or for a mere €1.95 you can catch the bus that stops a few minutes walk (down) the hill. We do not consider ourselves super fit in any way but manage the walk up quite easily several times a week.

Neighbourhood

We are very fortunate in that we have wonderful neighbours who originate from both Madeira and Portugal. Santa Luzia is considered to be one of the more affluent areas and as such we are surrounded by some very lovely homes and it is very quiet. The Madeiran people are super friendly and always willing to offer guidance and help when they can. There is a super little shop just five minutes down the road that sells all the basics and more and has fresh bread delivered everyday. A 15 minute walk down into town will bring you into central Funchal where there is an abundance of coffee shops, cafes and eateries to suit everyone’s budget, Our two main grocery stores are Continente and Pingo Doce, both of which are very central to town.

Getting to my home

As we are a wee little island in the middle of the Atlantic your only option currently is to get here by flying. This can be done direct from many airports in the UK and Europe. If you are coming from the west i.e. America then another option would be to fly via the Azores however when searching for flights you will find more options if you go the via Lisbon route.

Nearest airport

Our one and only airport is officially called the Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport however just using Madeira or the code FNC is quite sufficient. From the airport to our home is approximately 20 minutes by car/taxi. Another option would be to take the aerobus and further information and timetables can be founds here https://www.sam.pt/en/. If as part of our swap we have agreed to do a meet and greet we will be waiting for you at the airport with your name on a board. We will of course then whisk you off to our home and help settle you in.

Getting around

There is a local shop five minute walk away and two larger supermarkets in town (Pingo Doce and Continente). You are merely a 15 minute walk away from being in central Funchal where you an abundance of coffee shops, cafes and eateries to suit every budget. Funchal and Madeira Island as a whole has very good bus and taxi services.
