Neighbourhood
Our house is surrounded by little waterways and playgrounds, as well as the nature area "Delftse Hout" stretching out from our house to Delft and a beautiful deer park. It is south of the royal city The Hague, offering restaurants, wonderful museums, shops and.... a fantastic seaside!
Having said that, we are actually closest to Delft's city center, which is a 10-minute bike ride and offers a realy gorgeous renaissance feeling with the old canal houses and the canals, the huge market square and lovely alleyways full of shops and restaurants. Delft is famous for Delft Blue pottery as well as the painter Vermeer, plus nowadays for its University of Technology (where I work).
With The Hague and Rotterdam city centers being so close, we tend to go there for dinners too, or to visit a museum.. In The Hague is the prestigious Mauritshuis museum with Vermeer's 'girl with the pearl earring'. It is the city where our government resides, and is at the beautiful seaside of the North Sea, offering long sandy beaches that people love to visit in the summer. It offers great time off and good fish in all the other seasons as well. Rotterdam (15 mins) is a very modern port city offering modern high-rises and a very different, spectacular architecture, different from all the historical cities in Holland. Lately, Rotterdam is popping up in all kinds of international rankings and magazines featuring as the Netherland's coolest and trendiest city - very true.
All the destinations in the Netherlands are within a 2,5 hour drive from our house. We are originally from the North (Pieke) and East (Wouter) of the country and are keen on promoting these authentic and more rural areas as well! Visiting great cities in Belgium (Antwerp just over 1 hour, Brussels 2 hours) and even Paris (2,5 hours by high speed rail from Rotterdam!) are options worth looking into as well. We love to advise on such trips!
Nearest airport
Rotterdam/The Hague Airport: 15 mins by car
Schiphol Airport: 35 mins by car
Getting around
There is a bus connection, but car and bike are the most convenient ways to travel from our house. You are welcome to use Pieke's car as well as our bikes!
