General Overview

Welcome to our family home in a charming village in the north of the Netherlands (Drenthe). A winning alternative to Amsterdam! CNN called Groningen one of the best places in Europe. The city was named as one of 17 destinations on a modern version of the "Grand Tour" by Quest's World of Wonder. The Huffington Post published about this city and compared it to Amsterdam, calling it "a jewel of a city". The Daily Mail called it "the top secret of the Netherlands: a watery, crazy city where children enjoy themselves". Tourists give Groningen an 8.4. If you like to discover places off the beaten track and don't like tourist traps, you should come to us. Green village Paterswolde is a very green village. A village with a 900-year-old history. It has always occupied a special position, because it is close to the city of Groningen. The fact is that this has led to the construction of a large number of estates. The presence of the wealthy owners of these estates has left its mark on the village. We live around the corner from a beautiful estate, forests and a National Park. Surfing, sailing and swimming We live in a wetland area, where the horizon seems to stretch out forever. Although your gaze is sometimes distracted by the beautiful forested riverbanks and trees of the surrounding landscape. The water of the Paterswoldse lake (just a 5-minute bike ride from our house) is a great place for surfing, stand-up paddling (SUP), sailing, swimming or just relaxing in the sun. There are plenty of restaurants on the lakeshore. The sea and beautiful islands The sea is not far away. It would be nice to visit one of the 5 Dutch islands such as Schiermonnikoog (the Netherlands) or Borkum (Germany). These are sand islands just off the coast in the Wadden Sea. The Wadden Sea is included on the Unesco World Heritage List, which underlines the unique character of this area. It is only a 45-minute drive to the ferry. Rent bicycles to discover the virtually car-free island, or walk along the dunes and the beach. You might even spot some seals. Cycling If you like cycling, you will enjoy our surroundings! We live in the cycling province of the Netherlands. In our area there are many safe cycle paths that take you along heaths and through forests and villages. Many of the paths have recently been connected to each other via a new network. You can borrow our bicycles or rent a bicycle/ATB. Day trips: Amsterdam, Fryslân, Germany etc. The Netherlands is a small country. From north to south, the Netherlands is only 300 kilometers long, from west to east no more than 200 kilometers. We live only two hours away from Amsterdam and the other major cities. You can also visit Germany for a day. We live about 30 minutes from the German border. The beautiful German city of Oldenburg is only an 80 minute drive from us, Bremen is 2 hours by car and to visit Hamburg you have to drive about 3 hours. The province of Fryslân, 30 min. drive, where Annemiek was born and raised, is worth a visit. Fryslân has been selected by Lonely Planet as one of the top holiday destinations in Europe (May 2018). Groningen, a gem of a city! From Paterswolde it is only a ten-minute drive to the city of Groningen. You can also do it the Dutch way and cycle to and through this amazing city (35 minutes by bike). As a lively university town, Groningen has the youngest average population in the Netherlands. It has a long and turbulent history, which is evident from the historic warehouses, courtyards and buildings. Groningen is also a city with guts, with the most numerous examples of innovative architecture within its borders and has a very interesting museum (in Assen there is also a great museum if you like museums, it is a fifteen minute drive). The Forum is a must-see; Special architecture, beautiful seating, the most beautiful library we have ever seen, exhibitions, films and a beautiful view of the city. In addition, because of its charm, Groningen was once voted the city with the best city center in the Netherlands. Nature Our region has a multitude of nature reserves. In addition to the three major National Parks nearby, there are also many forests and moors that make great recreational areas. The nearest forest is only 200 meters from our house, 5 minutes walk. In principle, the nature reserves can be separated into peat and sand areas. Characteristic of our area is the ancient landscape with its winding streams, forests, heathland and of course the famous dolmens and burial mounds. UNESCO World Heritage Sites We have several UNESCO World Heritage Sites nearby. The prehistoric dolmens (15 min), the colonies of benevolence (45 min), the Wadden Sea (45 min), Schokland and the Wouda Pumping Station in Lemmer (just over 1 hour).

The Space

We have four bedrooms and a study. If necessary, we can place an extra bed.

Guest Access

Unfortunately our house is not suitable if you are disabled due to the stairs.

Notes

Our house has a roof of thatch and straw! It was built in the thirties and is characteristic of this time. We moved in November 2016 after a total renovation. It is an ideal family home. We have a trampoline and live close to the outdoor pool. Children's bicycles or a child bike seat are also available to enjoy the miles of safe cycle paths. It is located in a nice street, just off the main shopping street. Very close to the city of Groningen, the lake and the woods (5 minutes walk), but also not far from the bigger cities like Amsterdam.
