Neighbourhood
Port Fairy is an historic and very quaint fishing village with a whaling and fishing history. There are many heritage listed buildings, plus a museum 200 metres from the cottage in Gipps Street.
The town itself has a great supermarket (IGA) open 8am to 8pm 7 days a week, complete with bottle shop.
Many excellent restaurants and cafes to try, and several local wineries nearby - Suffoir winery and Basalt winery. There is also a fabulous boutique brewer at Koroit (15 mins drive from Port Fairy) called Noodledoof.
Budj Bim - a UNESCO world heritage site is just a 60km drive at MacArthur.
Tower Hill Reserve, nestled inside a dormant volcano is a lovely place to visit, with an abundance of roaming wildlife to be seen - emus, kangaroos, koalas, and bird life.
The historic town of Portland is an hour’s drive. Established by the Henty Brothers, farmers and whalers, Portland is considered to be Victoria’s first permanent white settlement, established in 1834. Well worth the drive!
Port Fairy has many walking and cycling trails, and the beaches and native flora and fauna is simply amazing. There are many wonderful artists who live and work in Port Fairy and the surrounding region.
Port Fairy is extremely safe, and is a very special place. In 2012 Port Fairy was awarded the ‘World’s most liveable town’ in the population under 20,000 category.
You will love Port Fairy, and our Edge17 Cottage.
Nearest airport
Port Fairy is 3.5 hours by car from Melbourne, and 6 hours from Adelaide, South Australia.
There is also a train from Melbourne to Warrnambool, which is 25 minutes by car from Port Fairy.
Bus service Warrnambool to Port Fairy.
Getting around
Port Fairy is a flat area, and very easy to walk around. Beaches, lighthouse and the centre of town are all a short easy stroll from the cottage. The renowned ‘Merrijig Restaurant’ is diagonally opposite the cottage.
The Cottage fronts Gipps Street, and has its own access to the wharf via a 30 metre fairy lit path through the beautiful gardens. It does not have a view of the wharf. Our ‘Waterfront’ apartment does however (see other listing).
