General overview

18th century large traditional cottage on the main street of a picturesque village. We are near to historic Oxford, Bicester Village shopping, Blenheim Palace and the Cotswolds. We are also a 5 minute drive from a train station with free parking and trains to London and elsewhere. Watch horses pass, enjoy the bells ring at the church opposite or a drink in the local pub. The house has 3 bedrooms, 2 with double beds and one is a large children's room with a full size single bed and a cot bed (toddler mattress sized), we also have a smaller cot for 0-6 months if needed. We have a male cat, Roxi, who will need to be fed. He has a cat flap so no litter tray. If there's any days you are unable to feed him I can ask someone in the village as long as you let me know, as much in advance as possible (eg if you decide to book a night or two away). We recommend having a car for your stay as public transport is very limited.

The space

From bottom to top - In the basement is a freezer and tumble dryer. On the ground floor a dining room with a piano, wood burning stove and seating for 6/7. We have a large kitchen with a range cooker, central island and window seat - we believe a kitchen is the centre of the home and ours really is, with many a social gathering had here. Our living room has sofa space for 6, an additional upright chair, smart TV with sky package, dvd player, wood burning stove and many books, dvds and games. On the first floor, a bedroom with a double bed and cupboard space and also a decorative fireplace. The other bedroom has a full size single and plenty of space to play. Toys and books mostly for ages 0-4, but some would suit an older child too. There is also a bathroom with a bath, shower head within the bath, sink and toilet. On the second floor, a double bedroom and small bathroom which has a shower, toilet and sink. We also have a small front garden with seating and a BBQ.

Guest access

House is on four floors - a cellar/basement with freezer and tumble dryer, ground floor, first floor with bedrooms and bathroom and top floor with bedroom and small bathroom. There is also a step into the house. The staircases are original and are perhaps not ideal if you have restricted mobility. You have access to everything described. There is an additional room on the top floor that will be locked, where we can put away anything more personal.

Notes

Children are welcome in our home and we have fireguards for the fireplaces and stairgates at the bottom of one set of stairs and in the doorway of the children's bedroom but otherwise the house is not fully baby/child proofed so some supervision and caution would be required.

Neighbourhood

We live in a beautiful village (think Hogsmeade in the snow), with a cosy family run pub a few doors down, a playground at the end of the street and several houses selling eggs, kindling and local vegetables with 'honesty box' payment. Everyone is very friendly and there are cows, sheep and horses to spot on a short stroll around the village. We live on the edge of a renowned bird reserve, Otmoor, which has lots of lovely walks and is very popular for watching murmurations

Getting around

There are very infrequent buses to Oxford and Bicester and a train station in the neighbouring village, 2 miles away, which links to London and elsewhere. A good base for exploring Oxford and/or the Cotswolds but you would get the most from it by having/hiring a car.

Heather

Hello, we're a family with two young children looking to explore the option of home exchange. I work for the NHS in mental health and Marie works for Oxford University. Before children we enjoyed couch surfing, both as hosts and guests, and have travelled a lot using Airbnb. We're planning to spend a month in Spain march-april and would love to arrange some swaps for this time, but also looking for swaps at other times of the year, weekends nearby and times further afield in the school holidays, quite open to different destinations.
