General Overview

Our home is a quaint 2-bedroom, 1-bathroom (with tub) home situated in the forested foothills of California, USA. Our home has a year-round creek, offering soothing water sounds for all. In the summer, it's delightful to walk around in and explore. We love having our kids enjoy the creek. We have a fenced garden and a mini orchard. Star gazing is really lovely on clear nights. We can comfortably sleep four adults, but five if someone is willing to sleep on the couch. We also have a toddler bed available. Our land includes several acres and wild animals pass through regularly, such as turkeys and deer. We do have countless species of birds, squirrels, lizards (all over the garden), who are often around as well. At night, we do have flying squirrels in the area and owls who sometimes make an appearance. In the main bedroom, there's a rocking chair with a biomat on it for use. We do not have central heat and air, but we do have window AC units for the warmer months and a cast-iron stove for the colder months (I assure you, this thing can heat very well!). We have all the wood and kindling you could ever need. We also have a video on how to start fires in the stove. The neighborhood is quiet and safe. You can take a daily walk down our dirt road (about a quarter mile) which runs along the creek.

The Space

We are set up for families (since we're also a family), and so there are numerous board games, toys, books, and art supplies to entertain children. We are also set up for healthy-conscious eating with two working Exaliber dehydrators and a Vitamix. There are farmer's markets nearby.

Guest Access

There are four steps up to our porch and into the house. The rest of the house is flat with no steps required.

Notes

We do not have a dishwasher (we hand wash and have a drying rack) nor a microwave. Instead of a microwave, we have a small counter oven that can toast, bake, air fry and more. We've found it to be way better than a microwave.

Neighbourhood

The neighborhood is quiet. We do have quiet hours: 9:00pm to 9:00am. The neighbors are a "live and let live" kind of community, but equally so, we are all there for each other if needed. People would be willing to help, if needed.

Getting to my home

You'll fly into Sacramento International Airport, and drive to our home, which is about 1.5 hours east. Do NOT use the app called Waze for driving to our home. It will get you lost.

Sacramento International Airport is 1.5 hours away from our home, but it's the main airport.

Getting Around

We are 15 minutes from downtown Grass Valley and 20 minutes from downtown Nevada City. Driving is needed. It's easy to get around!

Melanie

My name is Melanie Bright. My husband is named Ian, and we have three children ages 16, 5, and 13. We homeschool our children. Our eldest daughter (age 16) is a published author and illustrator, our son (13) loves to build his own videogames, and our youngest daughter loves nature and animals. We are open to many different places around the world, so please feel free to ping us if you're interested in swapping with us. Places of interest to us right now: places near Yellowstone National Park, Yosemite, Arches National Park, near Disney in Florida, New England, all of Europe (particularly Denmark!!), Thailand, Japan, Bali, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, any island countries. Our goal as a family is to travel at least one a year for a month (ideally, but not required) so we can immerse ourselves in local culture and daily living. We are a theatrical family and love exploring. We are new to exchanging, and we are excited about the possibilities! With a family of five, it can get expensive for lodging, so we're hopeful to have the opportunity to travel more this way.
