Neighbourhood
Our house is situated in a small town called Rohr with some historically interesting buildings. It´s a laid back place, but offers all the basic necessities like a supermarket, bakeries and several other shops, doctors or a pharmacy within the village.
Rohr has a nice public swimming pool and there´s plenty of opportunity to go horse-riding. There are offers for kids, too. The charming village is surrounded by a network of paved narrow streets ideal for walking, hiking or riding our bikes or for inline skating. The place is in the very heart of the Bavarian beer production with its hops fields and plenty of private breweries. You can find many typical restaurants or beer gardens here. There´s even a beer museum nearby with its highlight, the Hundertwasser tower.
Rohr is an ideal place for day trips to all the different Bavarian regions, the Autobahn being only 5 minutes away. You can reach Munich in about 1 hour, Nuremberg in 75 minutes and Regensburg in 25 minutes. The city of Regensburg is probably one of the most beutiful medieval cities in Germany if not in Europe. It is now UNESCO world cultural heretage for its unique ensemble of about 1200 protected medieval buildings including the fine gothic cathedral and the 800-year-old brigde over the Danube. What makes it so special is not just its 2000 years of history, it is also a young city with bustling squares and narrow, quaint lanes - and especially in summer it has a feel of a Mediterranean town when thousands of people flock the literally hundreds of bars and restaurants or modern cocktail bars in historical buildings.
Other main tourist attractions are of course Munich, Bavarias capital, with its mixture of traditional life and modern buildings such as the BMW museum or the Allianz football Arena home to Bayern Munich (Munich´s stadium and the airport are only a 50 minutes drive).
Nuremberg with its medieval castle and its famous Christmas market or the zoo is also a great day trip.
There are less known but also wonderful cities around. Landshut with its gothic old town and its castle overlooking the city is only 35 minutes away.
Passau, situated on a peninsular between the Danube and the Inn is also a popular tourist destination because of its baroque city centre and Rennaissance cathedral and its unique surrondings.
If you are looking for natural beauty, you can reach the Alps or its great lakes within at least 90 minutes. Close even there is the so called Bavarian Forest with Germany´s first national park. It´s a low mountain range covered with partly primeval forest great for hiking of nordic skiing in winter.
But even closer you can discover natural beauty. Within a 20 minutes drive you reach a canyon formed by the Danube. Take a boat trip through the canyon and arrive at the shores of a 1200-year-old monastery where some of the finest dark beers in the world has been brewed for centuries. From about the same starting point you can start a bike tour through the beautiful valley of the river Altmühl. The valley is overlooked by several castles and a pre-historic dripstone cave you can explore.
Other places you could reach easily for a day trip are for example: Bamberg (UNESCO-city), Augsburg, Salzburg (Austria), Rothenburg o.d.Tauber, Schloss Neuschwanstein, Legoland Günzburg. Or if you are looking for an excursion for a weekend or several days, you could go to Prague (3 hours), Northern Italy (4 hours), Switzerland (4 hours), Dresden (3,5 hours), Berlin (5-6 hours), Heidelberg (3-4 hours), Vienna (4-5 hours), Frankfurt (4 hours), ...
But if you are looking to stay in the area enjoying the time with your children, there´s also plenty to do: there are excellent (indoor) pools or spas (Europes biggest: 50 min.) or 2 thermal baths (only 20-25 minutes each), there are zoos, a bird park (10 min.), theme parks (Legoland: 2,5 hours, Playmobile park: 80 min., Bayernpark: 60 min.) and smaller indoor kids parks. There are plenty of lakes for swimming or sunbathing.
Should you be interested in sports, there´s professional football and ice-hockey along with other kinds of spectator sports. There are lots of opportunities to do sports yourself as well.
There are also excellent shopping opportunities. You can either browse the many shops in city centres or visit shopping malls like the two in Regensburg (30 Min.). In Ingolstadt you can enjoy the outlet centre "Ingolstadt Village" where many designers and top brands offer for much less. (40 Min.).
If you care for organic food, there are two farms nearby (3-5 min. by car) which sell their own products and a choice of regional and international high quality organic products.
All in all Germany and Bavaria combine history, tradition, culture, natural beauty and modern life - it´s easy to do and see a lot for everybody. The country´s modern infrastructure allows comfortable travelling in a clean and safe environment. Hope to see you soon in Bavaria!

We are Robert (48), Diana (46) and our two daughters Angelina (12) and Juliane (10). I am a teacher and my wife has started her business in alternative medicine. We´ve got a cat, Gringo, which stays outside all the time, so he wouldn´t bother you if you are not a cat lover. He is happy with a tin of cat food once a day.
We enjoy travelling and getting to know new places - we´ve travelled quite a bit so far, but with kids the way you travel changes, but you know that...
Hope to see you soon in Bavaria or elsewhere...
