General Overview

We offer a small off-grid cottage (45 m2) in rural Spain, in the El Matarraña area, around 2 km from the closest village.

The Space

The cottage is located on a plot of 6 hectares in total, which it shares with our main house, a veggie garden, a chicken coop, fruit trees and a small stone hut for guests. The cottage has a shaded terrace and its own fenced little garden of around 300 m2 and is located around 100m from our main house with trees in between, giving you privacy. The cottage has running water (gas boiler), electricity, a gas stove, a simple dry toilet, all the basic kitchen equipment, and internet. The property is off-grid, meaning water comes from rainwater collected from the roof, and electricity is produced by a solar installation. There is a wood stove to keep you warm and cozy in winter. If you don't want our dogs to come visit you, your garden has a separate fence that you can keep closed. The cats will probably still come over, though. They are very curious.

Guest Access

Parking is readily available at our finca. You should ideally have your own vehicle to come here, and to get around. Public transport is extremely limited. The sleeping area is on a mezzanine above the main room, accessible over a ladder/steep staircase.

Notes

- As we are off-grid and rely on rainwater collection, we need our guests to be VERY mindful of their water consumption. - Please also be aware that the toilet is a simple dry toilet that needs to be emptied. - We have two large dogs, so you should be comfortable around dogs.

Neighbourhood

El Matarraña is also known as the Spanish Toscana. It is dominated by olive and almond orchards, with pine forests in between. From our finca, we have numerous beautiful walks right on our doorstep. A section of the Via Verde is not far from our home, nice for cycling tours. The mountains of Els Ports national park are a short drive away, offering great hikes and natural swimming pools. Popular spots include El Parrizal, La Pesquera, Toll del Vidre, and Toll Blau. The closest village, Cretas, is a 5 minute drive away and has small shops and a couple of bars. The next bigger village, Valderrobres, is reachable in 15 minutes and has bigger supermarkets, a post office, a launderette, restaurants, and other amenities. The villages in the areas are generally very pretty, with historical centres. Things here tend to be slow and quiet. When you wake up, you will probably hear our rooster crowing, maybe a tractor driving by in the distance, or the sheep from the nearby farm.

Getting to my home

It is possible to get to our area by HIFE bus. We can pick you up from one of the nearby villages. However, there is no public transport right to our finca, and for getting around. If you want to see the area we highly recommended that you bring your own vehicle.

Nearest airport

Barcelona 2:45 hours, Valencia 2:45 hours, Reus.

Getting Around

a car is recommended, although you could also reach the closest village by bicycle.

Simone and Julie

we are a French-German couple. A few years ago we chose life in the Spanish countryside, where we are now building an off-grid finca for us, our two dogs, five cats, and our chickens. We are new to this home exchange experience but have had quite a few Workaway volunteers stay at our place. We would love to find people in Barcelona who also enjoy having the best of both worlds: city life and nature. Our dream would be to build a regular exchange with a person or couple who would enjoy spending some time in the countryside while one or both of us would be able to also reconnect with the city from time to time.
