Neighbourhood
Our apartment is in the center of the village. It is a residential area, on a street with little traffic and you can reach all places on foot. Allariz is a small village of 6000 inhabitants in which there are no distances.
In our neighborhood and in the village there is everything you need for your stay. On the same street there are two supermarkets, a fishmonger's, a butcher's and several cafes. Every Saturday there is a traditional open-air market two minutes walk from our apartment where you can eat the famous Galician octopus. Also, every Saturday there is a local produce market where you can buy cheese, fresh vegetables, bread and honey.
Within walking distance of our house there are pharmacies, health center and many outlet stores of clothing and accessories and local product stores.
In the historic centre and in the river area there are restaurants, entertainment venues and terraces where you can enjoy having a wine, a coffee or a soft drink or simply watching life go by.
Allariz is a tourist town and therefore depending on the time of year there may be more or less people, but as in most of rural Galicia you can enjoy its charms without having to fight with crowds of tourists.
Nearest airport
In Galicia there are airports in Vigo, Santiago de Compostela and A Coruña. You can then rent a car at the airport to get to Allariz in 1 hour and 20 minutes from Vigo, 1 hour 15 minutes from Santiago de Compostela and 2 hours and 15 minutes from A Coruña. You can also get to Ourense by train (1/2 hour from Santiago de Compostela and 1 hour from A Coruña) and rent a car at the station itself. From Ourense to Allariz it takes 15 minutes by car.
Another airport option with many international flights is Porto where you can rent a car to get to Allariz in 2 hours and a quarter.
If you fly to Madrid you can reach Ourense by high-speed train in less than 3 hours.
Between Ourense and Allariz there is a bus service but to get to know everything our region has to offer, charming villages, the Ribeira Sacra, go to the coast and much more it is necessary to have a car.
Getting Around
If you are a lover of rural places and small charming villages near the city, Allariz is the perfect place.
Allariz, in the heart of the province of Ourense, is a Galician town that harmonizes natural heritage, cultural richness and hospitality. Its historic centre, declared a Historic-Artistic Site, preserves cobbled streets, cosy squares and medieval buildings that evoke a past of strategic and commercial relevance. The church of Santiago, the Romanesque bridge over the Arnoia or the convent of Santa Clara are architectural jewels that narrate centuries of history.
Allariz is also a privileged place as it has been part of the UNESCO Network of Biosphere Reserves since 2005. This recognition underlines the value of a territory that extends along the valley of the Arnoia River, where riverside forests, meadows and mountains coexist with a rich cultural and ethnographic heritage.
The Arnoia River, which runs through the town, is its soul and engine. Its landscaped banks, walkways and old mills form an ideal environment for walking and connecting with nature. In recent years Allariz has added a new attraction: the waters of its spa hotel have been officially recognized as mineral-medicinal, standing out for their healthy properties and becoming an attraction for those seeking well-being and relaxation.
The banks of the Arnoia River are perfect if you like water because you can cool off in its pleasant and well-kept river areas and also in the great municipal swimming pools that have outdoor pools for the summer months and a large heated pool that works all year round.
Beyond the urban core, the natural heritage unfolds in routes and trails that lead to forests, meadows and viewpoints, always in perfect harmony with the leisurely rhythm of the Arnoia.
The town of Allariz is charming, surrounded by nature, suitable for hiking and invites you to stay enjoying a slow life, but it is essential that if you come to meet us you also visit the city of Ourense where we have our main house just 15 minutes away by car. In Ourense you can enjoy the hot springs, visit its cathedral, check the high temperatures of the waters of the Burgas fountain and enjoy its wide range of restaurants and typical Spanish tapas in the old town of the city, always full of atmosphere.
Travel through our incredible Ribeira Sacra candidate for UNESCO Heritage where you will find centuries-old monasteries, countless hiking trails and the canyons of the Sil River with its areas of heroic viticulture. A little further afield, the Ribeira Sacra del Miño awaits you with its many Romanesque churches, viewpoints and water activities on the Miño River.
Don't worry because to organize your visit I will provide you with a guide with many ideas of excursions that combine nature, historical heritage, visits to wineries, viewpoints, tours of the Miño or Sil river by boat or boat, Romanesque churches, hot springs and many more.
You can also visit villages such as Ribadavia and its Jewish quarter, the thermal area of Prexigueiro, Celanova with its impressive baroque monastery, the town of Vilanova de los Infantes and much more. If you are a lover of hidden gems and the routes less traveled by mass tourism but full of authenticity, we have many more proposals for you.
The province of Ourense borders Portugal so at a distance of just over 1 hour by car you can set foot on Portuguese soil and visit towns and cities full of charm in the neighboring country such as Chaves or Valenca do Miño, and a little further away Viana do Castelo, Camiña, Guimaraes, Braga or Esposende are destinations you could reach.
The city of Porto is about a 2 hour and 15 minute drive from Allariz so you can do a round trip visit in the day.
We are also very close to the beautiful and spectacular Galician coast. At a distance of 1 hour and 15 minutes by car you can visit the Galician Rías Baixas and its many beaches. Towns such as Baiona, the city of Vigo, the city of Pontevedra, Playa América, Samil beach, a cruise to the Cies Islands are things you can do on a round trip on the same day from our house.
If you spend one or two nights away from home you can enjoy any point of the Galician coast, the Costa de la Muerte, the area of the dunes of Corrubedo, the peninsula of O Grove with its beaches of crystal clear waters and white sand and where you can enjoy the best sunsets in the world and enjoy the best and freshest fish and seafood.
And of course, just 1 hour and 15 minutes away by car, we recommend that you do not forget to visit the monumental Santiago de Compostela, a city of pilgrims, where you can visit its magnificent cathedral and stroll through its well-preserved historic center.
