Neighbourhood
We are in a small and charming village called Founex. It close to the centre of Geneva - just 30 minutes by public transport (the bus stop is just out the front) or 20 minutes to Geneva by car. Public transport is very easy and efficient.
Founex has a lovely wine bar and restaurant 'L'Intemporel', an auberge and a well equipped epicerie (small supermarket) and local famers marche with fresh produce. There is also a public electric bike station a few steps down the road, where bikes can be hired by the hour using the app ‘PubliBike’.
Beautiful Lac Leman (Lake Geneva) is minutes away and we are at the foot of the Jura mountains. There is a shopping centre 5 minutes away with a department store, many boutiques and a gourmet supermarket, as well as the famous Divonne markets just over the border in France.
Our home is 35-45mins drive from many of the ski slopes in the Jura or just over an hour to the French Alps including Chamonix, Les Get, Morzine and Megeve. On the Swiss side, we are 1.5hrs from Verbier, 2hrs from Gstaad, 2.5hrs from Zermatt and the smaller resorts of Villars, Leysin and Les Portes de Soleil are even closer. This means that you can chose to explore and ski in a different resort each day.
Lac Leman (Lake Geneva) is a few minutes by car or bus and it is great for swimming during summer months. There are many beautiful lake beaches (plages) and pools with activities for the children.
There are also many scenic boat trips you can take from nearby Coppet or Nyon Port and tour around Lac Leman to the medieval French village of Yvoire and the famous thermal town of Evian and also Montreux (known for its annual Jazz Festival). We highly recommend the lunch or dinner cruises on one of the restored turn of the century steam ships.
We are situated on the Swiss/French border and the spa resort town of Divonne les Bains is 3kms from our home. It is a delightful French village with a large twice weekly market and many restaurants and activities including golf, horse riding, swimming and other water sports.
We are in the perfect location to explore both Switzerland and France. The area is wonderful for hiking, cycling, water sports and skiing. It is all just out the front door.
If you wish to explore further afield there are numerous day trips possible, including:
- The beautiful old town of Annecy nearby in France (45 minute drive)
- Chamonix, world famous for hiking, mountaineering and skiing, of course. Or you can take a cable car ride up for the views from the 3800m Aiguille du Midi (1h15 drive)
- Lyon, France with it's famous Flea market on Sundays (1h30 drive)
- A walk, bike ride or wine tour in the nearby vineyards of 'La Cote' (15 minute drive) or the UNESCO world heritage terraced vineyards of Lavaux (35 min drive).
- A Cultural day in the museums, galleries, cafés or shops of Geneva, Lausanne, Bern, Basel, or Lyon (all between 15 minutes and 2h by train)
- Limitless hiking, skiing, biking and climbing possibilities in the Alps or Jura mountains.
For a weekend getaway there are even more opportunities, a short 1.5h drive (85km) through the Mont Blanc tunnel and you arrive in the Aoste region of Italy or a 2.5 hour drive to some of the best wines in the world in Burgundy. Even Paris is only a 3 hour train ride from Geneva, and the south of France 4 hours by train or car.
We located close to several of the biggest outdoor music festivals in Europe, the famous Montreux Jazz Festival in June, the annual Paléo Festival in July and the smaller Caribana Festival.
Nearest airport
Geneve International Airport is quick and easy to get to and from, both via car (20mins) and public transport (30mins)
Zurich International Airport is 2.5hrs drive or the same via train.
Both Geneva and Zurich airports are hubs for flights all over the world.
Getting around
We are very well served by public transport. There is a bus stop just out the front and the train station is les than 10mins away. From there, you can get to the centre of Geneva in 15 mins and elsewhere to rest Switzerland and even, France. The train service in Switzerland is excellent and everywhere is easily accessed. We would also consider doing a reciprocal car exchange :-)
