General Overview

Our waterfront cottage is a well-maintained with 2-bedrooms, a queen-sized pullout couch in the living room, 1-bathroom cottage. It updated with a large front addition and panoramic views of Hope Bay. The kitchen and bathroom were renovated, and there is a small beach in front of the cottage that is partially shaded. At the water, a dock, elevated deck, firepit, picnic table, and lounging chairs are set up for summer fun. Spring, summer and fall hiking and biking are excellent, and the cottage is well-insulted and heated for cooler weather.

The Space

Comfortable, spacious open-concept living, kitchen and dining areas. Large front windows offer panoramic views of water, sky and escarpment. The Saugeen-Bruce Peninsula is a UNESCO World Biosphere where hiking, rock climbing, and kayaking are very popular, and it is an international destination for many outdoor enthusiasts.

On the Georgian Bay side of the peninsula, the cottage sleeps a maximum of five comfortably with two queen-sized beds (1 in each bedroom), a single bed in one of the bedrooms or by the wood stove, and a queen-sized mattress with the pullout couch in the front addition.

New claw foot tub, separate rain shower, washing machine, kitchen with stone counters, modern appliances, and selection of stainless steel pots, pans, knives and cookware are all organized for easy spring, summer and fall living.

Guest Access

The cottage in on one level and there are two steps to enter the cottage at both the front entrance to the living room and back entrance into the kitchen.

The cottage is just 50 feet from the water's edge with a small beach. A dock, elevated waterfront deck, fire pit, fire wood, lounging chairs, canoe, and picnic table are situated by the water. Backyard apple trees flower May-June and ripen with apples every August-September. Garden shed contains 4 bikes, 1 Weber charcoal BBQ, lifejackets, fishing rods, paddles, 2-3 sets of golf clubs, etc. for many hours of outdoor enjoyment.

Notes

The kitchen is well-stocked with staples such as herbs, spices, bbq rubs, tea, coffee, butter, olive oil, rice, maple syrup, sugar, flour, jams, condiments, etc. For everyone's convenience, staple food supplies are shared, and guests are asked to please replace any staple such as butter, sugar or oil as they are used up.

Fire wood is stacked outside for a campfire or to heat the cottage during the shoulder seasons.

All beds come with 100% cotton sheets, towels, duvet covers, wool, cotton and synthetic duvets and pillows. Extra linens and bedding for each bed are stored in the bedrooms.

HomeExchange guests are provided with fresh towels, linens and bedding. Laundering of all cottage linens, towels, cloth napkins, etc. is included in the cleaning fee.

Neighbourhood

Access to the 885-km Bruce Trail is a quick walk from the cottage, and many gorgeous hikes are situated up and down the peninsula overlooking Georgian Bay. The cottage is just 15 minutes N of Wiarton and 10 minutes S of Lion's Head.

Hope Bay is a quiet, family-friendly community with a large sand beach and corner store with canoe, kayak and paddle boat rentals. The gravel road along the water is an informal recreation trail used extensively for walking, biking, hiking, jogging, and a mountain bike park is less than 10 minutes away.

The area has many local amenities to enhance your visit.

LOCAL FAVOURITES include area farmers' markets, farm-gate sales at local farms, fishing for trout and bass, night skies for star-gazing with fireflies in early July and August meteor showers, fresh and wild fish @ Howell's fish shop in Wiarton, spring water at Berford Lake, and Bruce Trail hikes along the escarpment edge overlooking Georgian Bay. Every August, the Pow Wow Trail comes to Neyaashiinigmiing (formerly Cape Croker), and the Cape Croker park hosts a Pow Wow weekend with drumming, ceremony, fancy dancers and great food such as bison burgers and bannock. Cape Croker Park is alcohol free during the Pow Wow weekend and on most long weekends too.

Getting to my home

As a rural area, getting to the cottage, around or in to the towns of Lion's Head and Wiarton is vehicle dependent.

Getting around Hope Bay is easy by foot, bicycle, canoe or kayak.

My husband loves the bicycle or motorcycle ride along Bruce Road 9 into Lion's Head and on to Isthmus Bay for the sweeping views of escarpment, sky and water.
Road cycling is popular along Bruce Road 9, but the cottage road is gravel and not suitable for racing bike tires.

Nearest airport

Nearest major airport is Pearson International on the western edge of Toronto. There are Flix buses to Owen Sound from Toronto's Pearson airport and from Owen Sound back to Toronto's Pearson airport and Union Station (but I would recommend taking the UP Express from the airport to Union Station, rather than sitting on a bus in traffic). Cars can also be rented in Owen Sound at National and Enterprise car rental locations

Getting Around

The cottage is just a 15-minute drive N of Wiarton, which has the largest grocery store and the regulated LCBO for beer, cider, wine and alcohol purchases. Close by is Lion's Head, a 10-minute drive N of the cottage, with a smaller grocery store and LCBO.

I am recently retired from working in communications for the arts, environment and children's charities. My husband and I enjoy hiking and cycling in Canada and travel to Latin American each year. We are slowly learning Spanish and hope to spend more time each winter developing our Spanish, a winter community of friends, and enjoying outdoor activities in a warmer climate. We loved hiking in Mexico, Costa Rica,Peru, Ecuador, Argentina and hope to visit Columbia, Brasil and more countries in Central America soon.

Our son is currently completing his architecture degree and living and working in Basel, Switzerland (Feb-July, 2026) and will be studying in Rome for 3 months starting this September. We hope to travel with him in the Italian mountains and outside Rome (wherever is cooler) this summer. My father, who is 87,  may also be travelling with us, so I will be looking for a 2-3 bedroom home exchange in Switzerland or Italy for late July and/or August.
