Neighbourhood
Sandy Hill is ideal for visitors to Ottawa. It is central to museums, festivals, restaurants, shops and other National Capital Region attractions. My home is a 30 min walk or 10 min bus ride to the National Art Gallery, the National Arts Centre, Byward Market and many other local attractions. Parliament Hill is just five minutes farther. The Governor General’s residence and national photography museum are an easy bike ride or 15 min drive.
It’s a walkable neighbourhood of old houses on tree-lined streets. My home is directly on the Rideau River, one block from walking/cycling paths that reach the Ottawa River path in one direction and, in the other, Hog’s Back falls. The Canal is a 30 min walk away for more cycling/walking paths and, in winter, skating.
In the summer, there are many lovely places to swim in the Ottawa River and Rideau River. In the summer, skate the seven km Rideau Canal or ski/snowshoe to your heart’s content down the Rideau River, one block from my home.
Sandy Hill offers excellent restaurants with a wide range of cuisines, from takeout to fine dining. There are cozy coffee shops and dessert spots. Groceries, pharmacies and other shops are within walking distance.
Nearest airport
Our house is a 25 min cab ride from the Ottawa airport.
Getting Around
Rideau Street, steps from my home, is central for the bus and O-Train. There are bike and scooter rentals nearby. Bike paths in Ottawa are excellent. My home is directly across the river from the Rideau River pathway, which connects with trails along the Ottawa River, Gatineau River and throughout Gatineau Park. Ottawa is a paradise for outdoors enthusiasts. If you prefer to drive, traffic is modest for a city of this size.
