Neighbourhood

Our neighborhood offers a glimpse into everyday island life, laid-back, genuine, and grounded. It is a local, working-class, family neighborhood with wonderful neighbors. It's the kind of place where people know one another and look out for each other. In true Hawaiʻi style, you'll often hear neighbors enjoying "pau hana" (the end of the workday), gathering with friends and family after work. Before long, though, the neighborhood grows quiet as most people turn in early and rise with the sun. While our neighborhood isn't a resort, we think that's part of its charm. It's a chance to experience Hawaiʻi as many local families do, while being just a short drive from some of the island's most beautiful beaches, the ranching town of Waimea, and all that the Kohala Coast has to offer.

Nearest airport

Our home is about a 35 to 40-minute drive from Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keāhole (KOA). Waimea also has a small local airport with direct Mokulele Airlines flights to and from Maui, making inter-island travel easy and convenient.

Getting Around

A car is essential for exploring the Big Island, as public transportation is quite limited. If we're doing a reciprocal home exchange, we're often happy to discuss exchanging vehicles as well. One of the joys of staying here is discovering the island beyond the guidebooks. Bobby is an outstanding trip planner and is always happy to share our favorite local recommendations. Whether you're looking for the best coffee shop, a farmers market, a quiet beach under a shady tree, the best snorkeling, surfing, swimming, sunset spots, scenic hikes, or a special restaurant for a memorable evening, we'll gladly point you in the right direction. We'll also leave you with our personal guide to the island, filled with favorite beaches, day trips, scenic drives, restaurants, and hidden gems we've discovered over the years. We want you to experience the Big Island the way we have come to know and love it.
